Yeah, I think the Korg wins this one fairly definitely. The Nord has a few things that my ear as a mixer and engineer says “well that’s nice I won’t have to EQ that as much,” but that’s a reflection of it not really representing the instrument QUITE as well. Sounds great for sure, but the Korg sounds like it gives you everything. You hit those keys on the piano sounds and I hear it all. The woodiness and even some of the tough to mix sounds you get from a real piano. It’s there. It’s real, and that’s what I want. And don’t get me started on the clav, that’s no contest. Both sound great, but the Korg sounds better to my ear in almost every way. That’s all with nice headphones, btw.

I have an SV1 and a Nord Electro 5D. I love them both! But each has it's pros and cons: SV1 is extremely heavy so it's not easy to carry to all gigs, travel on a plane. Although it sounds great, it is very limited on basic things like layering, splits and no way to load new samples. SV is stuck with the 2 or 3 soundpacks available. Nord, on the other side, is light and very flexible, that's why I got it. SV1 sounds great for Rhodes, Wurli, Clavinet. It sucks on Organ sounds. Nord has tons of sounds, you can load your own samples, and organs are great.

My Korg SV2-88 is everything I could want and more. I bought it just before the lockdown, which in Australia was a fairly lengthy time frame. Typically I use the vintage tones these are made for, simply as they are so good. I run the Korg through Ampeg Bass amplifiers, no pedals or effects. I am sure the Nord is awesome, world wide sales are a testament to that, but the Korg SV2 is like a car from the 1960s, when things were made properly and creative design was encouraged. The Nord design I find very uninspiring, like a Rubix Cube, another red slab. Pick your favourite tone, then tweek it, taking advantage of all the options, and that beautiful glowing Tube and try to wipe the grin off your face.

I went to the store to choose between a Roland Rd-2000 and Yamaha Yc88. The Sv2 wasn't even on my radar but it was there on the rack so I tried it out. Omg it completely blew me away. It isn't "supposed" to be the better board but it felt like it had a lot more soul and responsiveness than the competition. It really did surprise me. I'm really stumped now. Honestly I had pretty much made up my mind on the RD2000, but I was actually a bit disappointed. It didn't feel alive. The SV2 absolutely did. It's obviously more limited in terms of options and controls, and even as a midi controller, so this is a tough choice.

The Nord definitely sounds better and to me worth the extra money. Of all the sounds compare only a couple of the Korg sounded close. The Korg sounds have the "strident" sound Jack said he likes, to me is like closing mic'ing a piano, but sadly typical of Korg piano it sound like the mic was gated and cuts off too fast. The Nord sounds ring out and die off more naturally to me. That was on the sounds that were close between the two, but other sounds the Korg sound were kind of muffled sounding the seemed to of lost that strident sound Jack mentioned. So overall all the Nord sounds were better, then add in the fact you can download many other sounds and have a collection tailored to your needs. So as I said I think the Nord is worth the extra money. I live in the USA so the price difference is even greater @500 USD but I would still buy the Nord. I wish Jack would of commented on the difference in keybeds.

Still deciding between the Korg SV2-S 73 key and the Nord 6D Electro. To be honest, I’m leaning toward the Korg. It sounds a bit more genuine and warmer. Any other sounds I need, when not playing out, I’ll just use it as a midi and get every other sound you can think of. Just hope the Korg isn’t that heavy to carry from gig to gig. But feel like it’ll do the trick, as a solo artist. Also love the fact that it has those speakers.
@manuelrenz72814 жыл бұрын
just as before, Nord for the acoustic and Korg for the ep´s. Yet, a Nord does not sound like a real piano, more like a piano on stereoids. SV-2 has the tube which sets it apart and better keybed. Really a shame the sound editor does not work with the ipad or iphone. Not only for the weight - take the 73-s Version, because with the 88 Version you have to fold seats any time you go to rehearsal. Wheras the two instruments have their weaknesses, Gabrielles choice should be easy - a truly gifted player. Your Hornsby is almost better than the original.... Just my two cents - many girls doesn´t like beards.

Well Korg has done quite a few good steps towards providing some good piano sounds. In fact, in terms of authenticity, they're probably doing better than Yamaha, Kawai and Roland. Then there's Nord; the only digital piano that can take on a good VST. Here they differ from Korg in many ways, one of which is the Key-off sounds. When our good Jack plays in A-major from 12:00, at a certain time, you can distinctively here the A below middle C cutting off in a way that supremely imitates an acoustic piano. There are also two moments during the video when Jack presses the wrong pedal. When he presses by mistake the Nord's pedal while playing the SV 2, i'm sure a trained ear could easily spot how dry the sound became without the pedal. However, when he does the same playing Nord, the sound doesn't lose quality at all. There are certainly other details that might add to my logic, but the Korg sounds nice for sure. ☺️

Yea, The Korg sounds nice, in some cases better than the Nord, but then I just keep having flashbacks to stubbing my fingers off the RH3 keybed in my SV-1. Essentially that keyboard used to 'bully' me. I ended the abusive relationship and sold the SV-1... don't miss it! SV-2 is very attractive and sounds nice, and speakers too, but I won't make the same mistake twice! Woody, iv noticed you have a P-121 as your 'home' piano... how do you find the keybed? As a live engineer, I usually don't really enjoy the Nords when they play alone or in bands that play soft music, they just sound very thin and lack these rich mids/low mids. In a busy mix they come through nicely though. It doesn't seem as obvious to me listening on the studio monitors, but the difference between the Korg and the Nord live is massive, not just spectrally, but also dynamically, when they hammer into the Nord it just feels compressed. And it's far simpler to take out a little oomph from the korg to fit it in a busy mix compared to trying to make the Nord sound full, not to mention the lack of dynamics that can't really be compensated live. *edit* I'm speaking only about the Grand sounds, Rhodes/Wurli is a different story again.

Nice demo comparing the nuances and subtleties. Both keyboards are desirable for gigging. My observation is, SV-2 has a bit thicker roundness to the piano and ep patches than the Nord, not that it’s better or worse. I would think the Nord has a feature to tweak the eq to fatten up some its patches if that is what you want. I could gig with either board right out of the box and be satisfied with factory presets. The nerd meter runs high when doing an A/B comparison with like keyboards. Played in an ensemble situation I think they would be very satisfactory.
@mrdavies78942 ай бұрын
As a " _stage piano_ ", I don't need the SV2 to sound _half_ as good as it does!! (Which is to say that, for what it is/was, the SV1 was great! 😄). With that said, that the SV2 can hold it's own against a _Nord_ is frankly astonishing to me! Couple that with the fact that the SV2 (and its forebear) also offer _great_ organ patches along with "other" sounds that are anything but "other" and the SV2 is an absolutely brilliant stage piano. Personally, for studio work, if I can't use a real grand piano (or I need a different tone than what I have available from the grand or the upright), Dexibell offer the best of all worlds. But the breadth and versatility of the SV2 - especially with the amp modelling and overdrive! - actually _beat_ the Nord as a "general purpose" stage piano. Now, if I was playing a _solo piano_ concert on a digital, my unquestioned go-to would be any of the Dexibell VIVO series (with any of the Nord Pianos as a close second, followed by the Studiologic Numa). But for a fast boot-up, well-designed, and _expressive_ machine, the SV2 has won me over. Thus, I'm very pleased with my SV2-73S! Although the internal speakers are not exactly room-filling, the ability to run to a friend's house, unpack _ONE_ piece of gear, and get a musical idea down, is simply priceless.

@D MD didn't say I had a problem. I like a warmer sound. Messing with an EQ live on stage isn't ideal. At all. Especially because Nords controls are completely dark on stage. I have a Nord Piano 4 which I use for wedding/private function gigs (well until it all went xxxx up) and as a ‘solo’ instrument it’s brilliant and gets admiring glances/comments from the guests. The action is ok so long as you’re a decent pianist but if you’re used to synths you’ll need a finger muscle workout. However if you play in bands and have to compete with guitarists perpetually turning up their amps then I’d take the Korg or the new RD88 - they’re brighter than the Nord (even if you use Nord’s ‘bright’ sounds) and much cheaper. I love the look and sound of the SV2 but the keybed I just cant get on with. It feels overly heavy and fatiguing to play. I had a Kronos with the same action and sold it for that reason. The Nord Piano blew me away when I tried it. The action was much more pleasant and felt more connected to the sound, but most of all for EP’s the amp sim on the Nord and how it responds to velocity is just much better and more authentic to me. Not to say that the SV is a bad instrument it’s still awesome but I just can’t get on with it, and while the valve stage is a cool idea in principle and could be an absolute game changer if implemented correctly it just doesn’t work as say hooking your keyboard up to a vavle amplifier would, which is presumably what it’s intended to emulate. The result of which is it becomes simply a gimmick rather than a useful feature of the instrument, it’s basically just a mediocre overdrive, which is a shame.

Ok, I'm a bit of a hifi nerd, but korg sv-2 is the first stage piano where I can totally relax and just enjoy the sounds on (pianos on Yamaha cp88 are good too). Nord sounds too much like inferior mp3 to me, except for the white grand. I hope they'll choose that road in the future and quit compressing the sounds so much. I hear NO magic in Nords compression lol.

As for the E.Piano, it's Rhodes, Wurli...- On VOX Continental the best E.Pianos from KORG (together with VOX). And only in VOX so far, nowhere else have I seen such chic E.Pianos from KORG. Therefore, the SV-2 is not the top-of-the-line in E.Pianos from KORG, I generally keep quiet about the ORGAN engine. And I want to say that I appreciate it higher than NORD, not only due to timbre and subtle nuances but also due to dynamic range. NuTube is worth adding to this - and the timbres of electromechanical instruments sound .... well, you know what I mean. Why is VOX Continental so in the shadows...hey Jack, sorry bro but why are you so dismissive of Vox Continental?

"Even if we win! Even if we play so far over our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days. Even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field. Even if every man, woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn't matter, because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk cause they've got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!..."

The Piano sounds on the Nord are so much closer to the original than any hardware I know of. And it's pretty much what you've described. There is something that makes you feel like playing the real instrument and I don't know what it is. The Korg is a good digital piano by comparison. E-Pianos went for the Nord as well especially the Wurly. But that was closer and the Korg is good there as well. I have to say: The Clav sounded better on the Korg to me! But I feel that's because you didn't use the fitting model. I know from the stage they have the different Hohner models like C and D. Maybe you didn't chose on the Nord what Korg intended.

Sound of Korg pianos, albeit rich and fabulous, doesn't match the input intensity of a player. I can't explain it but if you look carefully you'll notice the "miss match" input vs intensity of a sound scape and shape when playing with a soft touch. And I'm NOT talking about velocity.

It has the action of a Rhodes, not a grand piano.

please play without sustain pedal and play staccato. you can see the power of Nord Piano modeling when play staccato and without damper pedal. Most of keyboard brand and even VSTs can't achieve this....
