This is one of the most challenging keyboards to get a hold of these days, I've been trying for months. Finally, I have been able to purchase one, and it is absolutely fantastic to play. Every sound is super fun to play, the instrument looks super great, and it feels amazing too.

ThePianoforever I am a fairly new subscriber and a new player. I have a Wurlitzer 170B that is unplayable. I recently went looking for an affordable instrument that would reproduce the classic electric piano sound that I love. As a relative beginner I bought a Yamaha ew 300. My question for you is what are the vintage pianos the Yamaha is trying to model in the electric piano section (hypertines= Rhodes) but not sure about the rest? I also would appreciate a recommendation for a reasonably priced say under $1000 keyboard that best provides all the vintage EP, clavinet and maybe a little b3 sounds? I can’t get any straight answers or recommendations from the local music store. I love your channel and enjoyed your first Milan studios vid...Keep up the great work!!!!

Cool video! In fact, there are not only 72 sounds in the SV-2, but more than 400. You just can access 72 of the internal sounds straight from the instrument‘s interface. If you‘re using the software editor, you‘re able to access all of the 400 sounds and can store them to the favourites. 👍

Had my SV2-88 for 10 months now. I play it through an Ampeg BA-110 Bass amp which I find ideal. Easily loud enough for live/rehearsal The R3 keybed on this is absolutely superb. I can coax everything I want out of every note such is the feel with this bed. I have played & owned some other four lettered brands and I describe them also with four letters. This is a keeper & will be a genuine classic in 20 years.

I have recently obtained a specimen of this amazing keyboard! I bought the SV1 in 2015 and thought it was amazing - for undisclosed reasons, I parted with it. When I learned the SV2 was released, I ordered one immediately (that was April 2020). But due to COVID, it wasn't delivered until a few weeks ago. Without a doubt, this is THE best and coolest looking instrument around. if you are looking to purchase a digital piano / stage piano / keyboard .... don't settle for anything less. It's pricey, but worth every penny (and more!). You will not regret spending on (saving money for) this incredible machine. And as James says ... "I bought it with my own money." 5/5 !!

How does Korg's RH3 action compare with the Kawai RHIII action in terms of simulating a real grand piano?
@gwapster13
@gwapster13 4 жыл бұрын
The Korg RH3 action is one my of favorite key actions on a digital piano, even though it doesn’t have the buzzword features of newer ones like triple sensors and emulated escapement (i feel like it does have the latter, just not advertised as such, and is very subtle)

I own Korg D1 and because of it SV2 is now my dream keyboard. The RH3 keybed is fantastic IMO, really great feel when playing classical or more modern stuff. I’m considering selling some of my other keyboards and save for the SV2S, there really is nothing quite like it on the market and I would love to finally have speakers on a high end piano. I know that it’s „better” to have studio monitors but it really makes a difference in feeling when the sound comes from the instrument itself. Yamaha CP-300 is the best example, a cult classic that is outdated today by most standards but it speaker system makes it feel more like a real instrument. Anyway, thanks for another great video!

22:07 I'm not really a fan of the DX sound either but for the opposite reason which now makes me feel really old. I prefer the Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Clavinet sounds over the DX sounds as by the time they came in I wasn't so into the soul music sound that they dominated. There are a few classics that I liked but not as much as I loved the older piano sounds. To me the more modern DX sounds were used too much in it's time and I used to switch the radio channel in the car when I heard the tunes that they were on back in the 80's

Hey James! I've really loved your review. I was hoping for that a long time and also I was one of those who ask you about that. Also I'm hopping the next review in wich you will do a comparison with the SV-1. So, it's a pleasure to see you and I'm so grateful! Finally I want to tell you I was doing a lot of research and now I'm finally trying to decide between a Korg SV2 and a Kawai MP7SE because they have many similar things (price range; really good pianos, vintage and some others sounds; tweak sound possibilities; adjust layering of the sounds, etc) but at the same time each with its own style and some particularity (similar but different keybeds and damper pedal response; knobs vs faders to adjust layering sounds, etc, etc). So I would be delighted if you can help me about this or if this maybe could inspire you to do a comparison between those Stage models in the future. Any opinion you can give me will be welcome!! I originally wanted this model but found none available. Kraft had a demo SV2 Black with no speakers (open box) so I got that one with the SV-1 stand and a very good seat, pedals and cables for $2000+tax. I also watched your video comparison of the SV2 and the Kawai ES8...after my purchase, but no ES8 was available so I was saved from making a mistake. I am running the piano with a Yamaha S801, Tekton Lore and a Rocket 10" 500w subwoofer. This setup will blow you out of the room, especially if you use the Orchestra patch.

Great review. Thanks. 24:00 I like your eq settings to "fix" the German Grand piano. General question re electronic pianos: do any of them simulate the interaction between strings like an acoustic???
@amigamagic5754
@amigamagic5754 4 жыл бұрын
Well, "simulate" is a big word. They try to "emulate" the real piano sound, but in the end most of them just play short samples with looping in the sustained part + some resonance effects added. There are a few exceptions like some Roland models (like the FP-90) that use piano-modeling algorithms, but none of them is able to really recreate all the magnificence of a real acoustic piano sound yet. You still can feel that "digital" factor in most (if not all) of these digital pianos.

You might be able to remedy the hesitant attack on full pipe organ setting by adjusting touch sensitivity curve mentioned on page 38 of the user manual (although it is more limited than an envelope editor). I am glad to see that the older style 5-pin MIDI jacs are installed. There seems to be a comprehensive editing package included. Something I would like to see is a 'Performance' section where you can configure and assign your combinations with varying ranges, with splits or overlaps, plus volume and transposition. There are some variables of tuning available such as stretch and equal temperament, but it looks like it lacks other options which organists and harpsichord might find useful. These are features on my 35 year old Korg SGproX. Nonetheless this looks like a really enjoyable board to play and I enjoyed your informative presentation and looking forward to your follow-up comparison of its' predecessor.

Hi James, I have Korg B1 electric piano and use it to practice at home. At school I learn to play acoustic piano. Unfortunately I still have a "heavy hand" according to my professor. I realize that one of the reasons may be that I always practice with the volume button quite low in order not to disturb neighbours (or protect ears when playing with head-phones). Would you suggest the optimal possition of the volume button in order for it to be the best simulation of a real accoustic piano? Thanks

Terrific review! It's a great upgrade to the SV-1, which I sold to get this one back in March. I might have been one of the first, and got it from Kraft Music (also in a pretty beat-up box). I agree that the acoustic piano sounds were not a generational improvement, but they are good enough if one is going to use this as a single board for gigging. If not, I'd recommend a separate board for just the acoustic stuff. Anyone else notice that the volume to the built-in speakers needs to be cranked - except for the built-in demos, which are super loud?

I don't know if roland is better for his connections about usb, zen core/mainstage and more "modern" concept...but the svr 2 sound seems really superior...i don't know..Thanks so much!!

If you are using the on-board sounds and you prefer the tones in the SV-2, get the SV-2! It would be my choice between the two.

Korg D-1 great home studio - not for gigs. Great Korg sounds and feel. Not a sturdy instrument though. Only recommend for home use.

Nice review. thanks. I am searching for an electronic piano that is closest in feel, touch, sound of a tier I grand. (I am tired of wearing out the hammers on my grand @ $3-5K a pop to replace.) I tried a couple Kawaii CA98s. Feel was good but neither could keep up, without distortion, on Chopin Ocean Etude. The software just couldn't handle that many sounds at once. No bells/whistles necessary, just best electronic to match top-notch grand?

@@ThePianoforever thanks, will check it out. I couldn't believe the distortion from the CA98. The salesperson said it must be the speakers that were distorting. Had me try a headset--same problem. Had me go to their other CA98, exact same problem in same spot in the music. Thanks, again. good reviews!

I have a SV2 and it’s awesome in many ways! But there are a few issues: 1: I’m a huge fan of a tacky,crisp and warm Elton John’ish pianosound. Even browsing the editor with tons of pianos and being able to layer 3 sounds,I just can’t find MY pianosound. It sounds a bit plastic. The SV1 actually had better pianos 2: The big church organ sounds sounds AWESOME but when you play faster passages,it just cannot cope and starts to cut. Feels like the 128 polyphony isn’t enough. 3: why is the organ sounds louder than the other sounds? 3: the drive knob only makes the sound louder and you might as well use the volume knob 4: its about time to make editor app for tablets. It’s 2021 and its about time to wake up! 5: the sustainpedal feels like a piece of lego Dear Korg,you should make a MASSIVE update on the editor. Maybe put in some juicy bread & butter combos. This instrument is way too good to forget some basic needs

I don't really have an answer for #1 but I do have a response for most of the other points here, all of which I like. :) 2: I think it's not a polyphony issue as much as it is an imbalance between the attack and release of the pipe organ tones. They have a slow attack and a quick release meaning when you play quickly it is slow to respond and quick to cut off. 3: yes the organ sounds are louder, a common problem on many digital pianos not just the SV2. As for why, I cannot say, it would seem to be an easy fix. 3a: the drive knob both increases the volume and the distortion, some amps distort more than others. Try the "boutique amp" for max effect. 4: that would be neat! 5: yeah... not the best sustain pedal. My old pedal for the SV1 squeaks a bit now too, but still works as intended. For the price of the instrument I would have liked to see a higher build quality pedal, like those Kawai includes with their ES line.

The speakers are reminiscent of the side lighting pattern around the salon windows of the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Nautilus. So you should have been doing this video in your best James Mason imitation. Especially with the organ simulation.

Hey I have the SV-188 I absolutely love it I'm curious what the speakers are like is that something I should upgrade to if I have an SV1 is the SV2 worth it?

Great video! How well do the internal speakers sound compared to other digital pianos (Kawai es8, Yamaha P515, etc.) thanks!
@verdatum

All I can say is that the lack of internal speakers on my SV-1 has been frustrating. I never thought I was going to need them, since they'd be worthless for performances, but they're really handy for things like practicing and impromptu rehearsals, where you don't want to lug around a keyboard-amp or monitor speakers.
