31 October 1980
Metropol, Berlin, Germany
Composers : Gary Brooker, Keith Reid, Matthew Fisher
This song is Procol Harum cover
The Band :
Lead Guitar - Cliff Goodwin
Bass - Howard Hersh
Keyboards - Larry Marshall
Piano,Arranger - Mitch Chakour
Drums - B.J. Wilson
Vocals - Maxine Greene
Vocals - Ann Lang
Vocals - D.E. Washburne
Lyrics :
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said:"There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
As I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
Her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
Guitar Solo :
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first was ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

I asked the vicar on my wedding day if they would play Whiter shade of pale , he declined said no , I will not have that being played in this church. I was so upset that I told the organist to play what ever he wanted, if I couldn't have this music just play whatever ! We have been together now for nearly 50 years. When my time comes to say goodbuy to all who have loved me ,this Whiter of shade of pale music will be the very last thing I hear ,

As usual, Mr. Cocker used both his incredible talent, and his knowledge of how to blend with an enormous backing band, to crank out a great cover of a classic tune. The original Procol Harum tune, is pretty amazing. This doesn't top it (something Joe has actually done a couple of times with his covers), but it's right there with it, which for a cover is pretty special. Man, Mr. Cocker was an absolute favourite of mine. He'll be missed.

Timeless Joe Cocker. My generation was so captivated with the music that spewed out of Woodstock 1969 and the '70s. The man is a legend. I note that there are still fond comments coming from Jose and CiDYYJ in the last few days and earlier. There is a whole few generations that grew on this. Absolutely a nostalgic journey down memory lane. I am sure, a lot of you out there would agree. The world has missed him since 22 December 2014. My thanks to Andranik Azizbekyan for sharing.

How much better live was Joe he owned every song he sung, the original artist’s would have been in awe of his talent. I’ve only seen him live once and if I had to pick the 3 best concerts I’ve ever been to his was No# 1 absolutely brilliant the world has lost a great talent RIP Joe

I would note that Joes recreation of songs are usually not just better than the originals but devastatingly better as to make the originals look like a pale comparison. But in this case I would say that the original Procal Harum version was vastly better in every single way especially the vocals, which is a rare occurrence. That’s not to take away from Joe but to show how great Brookers performance was for this song particularly.
