Wow, Joe Cocker was a true artist. I saw him at O2 in Prague in 2013, just a year before he died and it was one the of best concerts I've ever been to. Almost 70 at the time, he delivered more than 2 hours of great music pretty much straight. Sir, you will never be forgotten.

I agree he made the song better. This version is sublime. But I wouldn't say it's the ONLY song made better than the original. Bob Dylan only plays Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower because it is better than his original. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is better than Leonard Cohen's (but only marginally imo). Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" is another one.

i had the privilege of playing keys with Joe in the late 70s for a couple of tours. pretty rough time for him. even so, he was the sweetest soul imaginable, funny and humble. and i never played a show without getting goosebumps listening to him sing. he was the real deal and he sang every note straight from the heart. a favorite memory is a show we played in Germany. Richie Havens was on the bill with us and he came on stage and sang "You Are So Beautiful" as a duet with Joe. Richie standing back away from the mic with his hands clasped behind his back, singing ever so gently, and Joe, well, being Joe with all the passion he always brought to that song. every one of us on stage was in tears by the end of the tune. godspeed Joe and thanks for the indelible memories.

@@merklingassoc I read in an article that during an interview he reavealed that 'You Are So Beautiful' was his favorite. Wow, awesome that you caught that in the passion with which he sang that beautiful song. I'd also read that his voice cracked at the end of that 1975 studio recording. He apologied for losing his voice, saying that he'd do it over. I don't remember who nor how many told him that his voice cracking was what put so much emotion into the song, providing the perfect ending. It couldn't have been scripted any better. They kept it in. Yes, I think you got that so right, that was soul, and it made the song his.

Was lucky enough to catch him live twice, the first time at the Heineken center in Amsterdam. Was standing 5 ft from the stage; as it was Amsterdam, smoking a big fatty. Offered it to him, he just looked at me, mouthed "thanks I'm good mate", and went into the next number... Even in his 70's he still had the voice... awesome experience.

That's so funny because I have a 31 year old daughter a 33 year old son and a 41 year old daughter. They all listen to all the music I grew up with, because that's all that was ever played in our homes and cars!! I often joke with them, hey does your generation have any good music? LOL Yes I know they do, however nowhere near the 60s and seventies, and Early 80's. The Very best years for music, this entire century!!!!!. They know all these songs by hearts. Should I ever meet a man who could sing to me like that, I wouldn't care what he looked like, how smart or wealthy, nor much of anything. I'd marry him tomorrow. Can you imagine being sung to like that every night? What an amazing turn on. Unfortunately, I learned this at about 50. I wish I had known this at 24. oh well when your beauty fades, and you find out what's really important in life, sometimes it's just a tad too late. Don't be a dumb you know what like me! Look always from inside out. Never from outside in. Words of wisdom from somebody who screwed up Big time!
