The more I listen to Andre' Rieu speak, the more I admire his feeling for music. The manner in which he talks about that special violin and when he says that you just cannot go into a shop and ask for three of these , well that is some thing which I can understand from a scientific and a mathematical point of view. Through life I always felt that musicians could produce even better music and design of better instruments if they had to join in the engineering mathematics and the science behind the instruments. Obviously once a musical instrument, as the violin, finds itself in the hand of a musician, the parameters that go to make up good music depend on the manner the musician plays it, especially the contents of the gaps in between the adjacent primary notes being played. The rate of change of the music depends on how the musician excites the instrument from different positions but the note itself is related to the engineering and science withing the construction of the instrument. Well in any violin, there are a few primary parts which set a note or notes at the same time and there is no time when the violin projects one solitary note due to the nature how the sting slips on the moving bow or through plucking it. So to mention a few parts of the violin which decide the nature of the emitted sound , here are a few of them. 1. The resonating chamber which has various parts or areas as a volume in the chamber or as a surface on the wooden part, where there could be a three dimensional vibration is the inner space or two dimensional vibration in the surface area of the woods. During manufacturing the thickens sculpted in the wood decide the resonating frequencies which is indeed a complex issue considering that the shape of the violin could have different parts resonating at different frequencies. 2. There is the bow in contact with the string, which in a violin the string is not just plugged but when the bow slides over the string, the friction takes the string with the bow till a limiting friction is reached and the string suddenly slips till the friction grips the string again at a rate decided by the bow velocity and the effective length of the string at any time. Thus the movement of the string in a violin is a saw-tooth or one which approximated to it. This means that when the bow excites the string then many many harmonics are generated in addition to the fundamental note. Again, the nature of the gut and the nature of the string decide the grip and time release of the bow on the string, to generate the saw tooth action of the string when excited by the bow, and so here exists a situation that can hardly ever be repeated equally in two different violins. 3. When the sting is plugged, with the fingers, well there is a damped oscillation of a particular frequency. Again the distances involved ,of the strings above the resonating chamber, the position at which the riders are set , all this will decide where the nodes and anti-nodes are formed in the resonating chamber. We shall not go into the material of the strings themselves as this decide on the rate at which the string oscillates and is damped, which is a different in the harmonic content as his is a damped simple harmonic whose contents are totally different from the saw tooth excitation of the string with a sliding bow. I shall not go into the transients and steady state condition of the notes decided by a musicians whim, nor by the state and nature of the woods. Well, I must say that at 05:07 Andre' Rieu with his statements, he proved the level of sensitivity he has to decide on the uniqueness of the quality of sound emitted by that particular violin. He is a great man with such ability to filter out all the individual frequencies which together make the final sound. He is a great man. I must end by saying that the parents of the little girl who did not want to play any more........... well, they too had a good ear for the sound that a violin could generate, for to offer a violin to Andre' Rieu, for him to buy, well they must have known that they had a treasure in their hands. On the other hand I feel that they were good parents in not only buying the best instrument they could buy for their daughter but they were good parents since they did not force their child to play the music for which she did not have the natural components to detect what is a good note. It was an honour and a privilege to hear Andre' speak in musical terms which I could interpret in a mathematical and scientific reason why his violin is unique and no master craftsman can repeat . He truly loves his music and have the most remarkable sensors that any musician can claim. What I find amazing is that what Andre" Rieu can detect with is ears, an engineers needs a few digital filter algorithms and the related computational power to know what Andre' Rieu would know in a second. There are and wonders and more beauty in the sound due to the vibrations contained in all the different distributed parts of any particular violin than many ears do not know of. As Andre' said, you cannot go into a shop and order three of these!
