At church they sing it at least 75% of a year's days (you can't sing it when Jesus is yet to be born/dead). But this version, the RIGHT grand version, is sung, I am afraid, only in one of the (4 in total) Christmas masses. It is intended to emphasize the specialty of that time.

not only that but I'm pretty sure the lyrics they posted don't even match the vivaldi piece... the lyrics they posted are just the greater doxology which have nothing to do with vivaldi. this gloria is part of the mass. the most common latin setting for it is missa VIII de angelis, the mass of the angels. not being a meanie, just hopefully helping to clarify. god bless everyone whether you're here as a christian or just enjoy the music. personally I'm a catholic and the greater doxology has a lot of deep spiritual meaning for me. hail christ king.

there's a great old magazine article from the 1930s that goes over the missa de angelis, including the gloria. it won't let me share links but if you type in musicasacra(dot)com(slash)journal(slash)caecilia it should take you to a page with the archives. you have to replace (dot) with a . and (slash) with / to make it a link. once you do that and go to the site click the issue for december of 1933 (vol. 60 no. 12) around a quarter to a half way down the page (they're in chronological order you should have no problem finding it) and you'll find the article on the 5th page of the pdf (which is a really high quality scan of the whole issue). it goes over some of the history and describes how it is supposed to be arranged and performed.

Sir Knight - Thank you, Sir Knight, I read the whole thing, pretty well. How sweet and innocent, trying to bring light to the world, exhorting to virtue. The part about German and Austrian music I found interesting - this was written in 1933, before WWII, and all the attendant hostility and propaganda, etc. I woke up this New Year's Day with Gloria playing in my head. We used to sing it quite regularly during Catholic mass. Hopeful and sombre at the same time. An easy tune for even a little child to remember yet deep and powerful and moving.
