Hang Out with this Homeschool Mom of 8 ║ School Week 19 │ ACE Curriculum

This week Thomas, Judah and Justus go skiing for the first time. (Thank you to Caeden Reeves and Jim for sharing some footage he took of the ski trip.) It's quite a comedy watching Thomas learn to ski. Apparently Judah was a natural and was the first to "graduate" from the beginner's class. They both hope to go again next year. (Justus decided early on it wasn't for him and spent the day on the sidelines cheering everyone on.)
The kids also have fun playing with their homemade kites in the wind, making birthday cards and goody bags for Eden's birthday and we get a package from Austria!
Thomas is 15 (9th grade), Asher is 13 (7th grade), Judah is 11 (6th grade), Justus is 9 (4th grade), Eden is 7 (2nd grade), Solomon is 4 (Kindergarten), Sophia is 3 and Claudia is 1.

I taught skiing for several years, and I always found it was more difficult to pick it up the older my students were. Judah is doing awesome!!! They look like they are having fun at least! Now Thomas just needs to learn how to get up when he falls without taking his skis off, and work on turns. Pretty good job for his first time on skis! Judah and Thomas are going to sleep well. In the east we don't have the magic carpet, we have the rope tow at most mountains here. And I LOVE how Solomon says Hamburgers.

Judah is a naturally athletic kid and it was no surprise that he took right to it. Solomon is kind of that way, too. Was it you that sent the popcorn? If so, we're excited to try it out! We were going to pop it today while our friends were over for church, but they stayed an extra day on their trip to Salt Lake City and we ended up having church alone. We're going to save it for next week. (If it wasn't you, disregard!)

Our kids just went skiing for the first time, last weekend! Thomas had us all laughing with him! My kids could totally relate to his newbie status! 😂 My kids wondered why he didn't use poles? His friends were super supportive, too! (#likesandviews 😂 ) PB Claudia was the best and I could listen to Solomon say "hangaber" all day long. 😊❤

I'm not sure why they don't give beginners poles. They didn't for us when we were kids either. It's fun for me making these videos because there are things that I don't think I'd take as much notice of if I weren't recording and editing videos. Solomon's lengthy obsession with "hangabers" is one of those things!

Andrea Mills Greetings from Vienna/Austria! Christina had made a really good choice. It was funny to see all that Austrian stuff on your kitchen table. The Manner Schnitten are being produced in Vienna, about 1 km from my home. Sometimes I can smell the chocolate when I step out of my door (no joke!), everybody loves them here.

That is so cool. The only sweets factory near me is the Haribo one in Linz and you can't smell that at all.

Andrea as usual each of your videos are always great to watch but my comment is about a video from the past. I'm referring to the pancake breakfast when you were talking to your grandmother. Not only is she beautiful but I see Eden and Solomon in her. Do you think she would be willing to be interviewed about her childhood? I have a close friend who grew up on a farm in Montana and I love to here about her childhood. She went to a one room school and her teacher flew in from the city for the week. My friend and her sister picked bugs off the plants in the garden for a penny each to spend at the once a year carnival in town. She remembers how thrilling it was to watch the carnival trucks drive by their farm. One of these days I'll send you an essay she wrote called Montana memories. Anyway, it is such a treat to hear about simpler days.

These grandparents are my dad's mom and dad. They live next door to my dad so growing up they helped take care of us kids a lot. Their names are Kenny and Lois. Grandma Fern is my mom's mom. Mom's dad died a year before my mom did. His name was also Kenny, so both my grandpas were Kenny.

+volition51 Actually, it's the opposite. Our wedding was at Grandma Fern and Grandpa Kenny's house. (That's where you see us go every other Monday on our school week videos.) This video shows us out at my dad's house. He had a friend staying with him for a few months that did a bunch of wood work with old wood dad had so we went to see the progress. I thought maybe it would show Grandma Lois and Grandpa Kenny's house, too. It doesn't, but it does show the kids going up to visit them. It was actually super warm that day; it got up to 74 at home. I was in the upper 60s at the slopes! Couldn't ask for a better day!

So excited to see the kids learning to ski! We are a family of skiers. Thomas' friends are doing a great job with the lessons, and Thomas' perseverance is amazing.

Have you narrowed the table to test out the smaller size yet? The length is clearly working out well; you can have a few activities at it at the same time. Great solution. We love our 8ft library table for the same reason.

We haven't. I told Tom I think it should either be 6 inches narrower or a foot shorter because of issues getting around the corners, but he's feeling happy with how it is and isn't ready to commit to trying the smaller size. Business has been a bit slow that last couple of months and we're going to put off buying the new table for awhile so I guess he's afraid he won't like the smaller size and will have to live with it a long time!

What about a hinge at 1 foot in to try the shorter length? Totally understand needing to hold off on committing to the permanent solution, winter is belt tightening time for us too.

Yes; Thomas' friend, Caeden, was wearing his GoPro and he let me use the footage he got. (There was one section that was taken with our friend, Jim's, phone, too.)

Asher is just like my grandpa was... if it can't be done at home he probably doesn't need to do it. He didn't consider going even for a second.

I don't know. (I never skied with a helmet before.) I wasn't there so I don't know why some of the boys had them and some didn't but I'm fine with them not wearing them.

I am from Austria and I have never been skiing without a helmet ;) maybe 10 years ago not everyone had one but now it's really rea to see people without a helmet. I think it's important to wear one if you have a brain to protect (at least that's what my mom allways said to me) ;)

Are yall a certain denomination of christianity or nondenominational?

Tom and I both grew up Southern Baptist. We attended a non-denominational church when we got married. Now that we've home-churched for so long, we don't consider ourselves any "brand" of Christian. Just plain, old Christians, I guess! :)

I'm sure you get a lot of flack for using the ACE homeschool curriculum for your kids ... I don't like it either but they're your kids and at least they're not being brainwashed by the liberal public school system and the US Dept. of Education. Hopefully Betsy Devos can shut down the Dept. of Ed. so we can move towards vouchers and get families like yours into the schools of your choice. Best wish and lots of luck to you and your family. Keep showing the world that homeschool isn't the worst thing that could happen.
