I was convinced that Max was permanently dead...it broke my heart seeing the clone machine fail

Technically he is. This max we see in the ending is actually from a different timeline/universe where Sam was the one who was the eldrich monster based off what he said. We can't completely trust him because it's Max, but... it's still safe to say that the max we knew through the first 3 games is dead. Potentially it could be that they could clone a new sam and max so each of them can go on adventures with their old friends again, but I doubt that is likely considering that it's very very likely that their eldrich counterparts completely died.

SPOILERS!! LIKE, HEAVILY DESCRIPTIVE ACTUAL SPOILERS OF THE ENDING, PAST EPISODE 3 Andrea, thank you again for the longplay. Watched all the three from the TellTale Sam&Max games you've recorded. Even while knowing Max died in the end and got replaced with himself from another timeline/universe, I poured my heart out when I saw Sam walking with his head low towards the last location they visited before Max turned into the big thing, and then placed his hat on the fence as though to say "goodbye". I actually couldn't stop crying at all since Max was blown up, especially at the part where a new star appears in the sky once he's gone. I find it interesting how Sam's expressions are mostly obscured throughout these scenes, maybe to keep the ambiguity to the player. Wished there was a little more emotionality, but that's just me anyway. Another thing I find interesting is Max's hallucinations, and how everything looks morbidly odd and "zoomy" from his point of view, whether due to his mental state or the Toys of Power. Y'know these tiny little "blue engine" things he sees? I actually do occasionally see those myself, in the form of tiny blurry dots in my vision. This is due to the fact I constantly sleep late and exhaust my vision since I should be wearing glasses. I found it interesting, to say the least! Also, that final segment was tons of fun. I just found it whimsical to see Sam and Max dancing out of nowhere. 10/10. Thanks for the longplay, and I hope you have a good day!

Huh, spoilers for episode 4 but. When one of the hands of Sam's clones are reaching inside of Stinky's diner, an axe appears when Max is choosing one of the devil's toys, I wonder if that's a reference to the walking dead series..
