i know andy very well, as i am a sports reporter for the radio. i met him first in 1985. he was the most ambitious football pro i have ever gotten to know! even after a hard two hour training, he would go on for two hours more, just him and the 2nd gk. once köpke allowed me to shoot exactly ten penaltys against him. the first one was in, because it was quite a rough ground in spain. the ball hit a stone just two inches to the line and strangely leaped over his arm. man, was this guy angry... for the following nine penalties i didn't have the slightest chance to score. even though i was in my mid twenties and had quite a heavy right foot. i really got desperate. whatever i tried - andy was like a telepathic panther, catching every single shot easily. i still have the deepest respect for his great performances. btw: great vid, too!!

Really really awesome story.... I like this story very much. Köpke for me one of the underrated keeper of Germany. All speak about Schumacher, Kahn, Maier or Neuer. I had back in time his two trainings videso. It is awesome to watch his performances. For me just in 1994 Köpke had to play instead of Illgner. Illgner good keeper, ok, but Köpke is another world: agil, technical skills, awesome type, concentrate. And I remember his constantely. In mind of his full career maybe I have 1-2 errors. Other keepers like Illgner or Neuer or Kahn I have just their 4-5 errors in memory.

@@SuperAttitudeera I think it is more that he never played in a "big" team and more known as the keeper who went from 1st ond 2nd Bundesliga. Or maybe he was not so "loud" like the other ones. For the rest: I know that the whole performance in the WC 1998 was not so awesome like on the EC in 1996. Some mistakes, ok. But allways normal mistakes and not so big things like Schumacher in the final 1986 or Kahn against Real Madrid in the CL. Well, maybe you are still right. For me remains one of the best german keepers of all time. His consant really awesome.

If there was another one with a superior virtue in a particular aspect is one thing, but he was the only goalkeeper I have ever seen that had absolutely no flaws to his game. There are lots and lots of excellent to amazing saves from many GKs, but you won't see them not only saving hard and tough shots, but grabbing the ball to an absolute halt in the process, like Köpke did time and time again. That's true security and confidence. There's a reason Sepp Maier was never worried about a single penalty at the time with Andreas Köpke between the sticks. His smile after he saved them said everything. My favorite goalkeeper of all time and without a doubt, even with his accolades, by far the most underrated goalkeeper in football history.

Can I just tell you how much I appreciate you making this video? Like, look, I recognize the talents of the younger generation, make no mistake: Neuer, Courtois, Ter Stegen, Navas - everyone does - hell Casillas is my number favorite of all time, but that's only because Köpke made the goalkeeper position look so damn attractive to an impressionable eight-year-old watching his first World Cup tournament. But I swear he's the only German goalkeeper from the last quarter century I've never heard mentioned in retrospect. They always cover Neuer, Lehmann, Kahn (of course), even the Bundesliga goalies of lower profile like Weidenfeller, Hildebrand and Wiese, and then skip to Bodo Illgner, but no Köpke. Although from what I know he is the one who's coached all the major ones after him so... perhaps not all heroes work center stage!

At the end he landed in Marseille. Im still a little bit mad at him after 20 years. Back than Stuttgart had a brilliant Team with Balakov, Elber, Bobic, Verlaat and Soldo and Jogi Löw as coach. With a world class keeper like him we could have had a Chance to become Champions. But landed 4th at the end and winning the cup.

Truly the best and from 1992-1998 he was phenomenal and had the old school mentality when it came to playing as well as reading the game. Andy didn't allow rebounds (the ones he did, he was able to push away or allow for corner kicks) and was so ridiculously quick on recovery. His angles were played perfectly! In 1996: Andy was the best goalkeeper in the world. His camps, currently, are wild. I wish that I had the technology that he is using to teach goalkeepers in the 1980s/1990s when I was a professional indoor player. Andy substituted quickness due to only being 5' 10" tall and was like a cat. In closing, Andy is just handsome! Sorry guys, it has to be said, ha! Handsome and I'm sure his wife concurs, ha!

A mi me gustan mas los porteros modernos, que son altos y muy ágiles, Buffon, Courtouis, Neuer, Ter Stegen, Oblak....
