Another underated goalkeeper who inspired me to play in goal, Francesco Toldo. He was Barthez's opposite number in the Euro 2000 final and were the two best goalkeepers in the tournament.

Watched Barthez in France in 98. Man Utd in 2003, in Korea 2002, in Germany in 2006. I've stood next to him. He is no bigger than 5'10. What makes a great keeper is winning, and you win with consistency. He was known for his mistakes on big occasions, something ALL keepers do, but it doesn't take away he was consistently good which is backed by winning. Barthez WON everywhere he went. The crazy Colombian keeper, Higuita, may have been the first to come out of his goal with the ball and be eccentric, but Barthez revolutionized and inspired the modern day keeper and how they handle the ball and being aggressive. Add in all the technical parts of his game; communication and ball distribution which are hardly ever shown in videos. The man was an athletic beast. These attributes put him in the top 5 for me. Especially when you consider he played thru the transition and technological advancement of both the soccer ball and soccer boots, and the change in height and speed of the modern day soccer player. 1)Oliver Khan 2)Fabian Barthez 3)Gigi Buffon 4)Peter Schmichael 5)Tie: Van Der Sar / Iker Casillas But I will say, Manuel Neuer may be the best ever to play the game when he retires. The "quiet" Oliver Khan...

He could jump, the only other keeper I ever saw jump as well was Dhimitri Karin, you do see some bigger keepers who don't like having to jump fixed to the goal line.

For me easily the greatest of all time. Forget the shaky moments in England, he was a born winner. First Champions League in 92 aged 20. To WCfinalist at the end of his career in 2006. No player boasts a career to that level. Add in fact that he’s not 6:3 like most keepers. Won titles at OM, AS Monaco, Man Utd, France. You don’t win all that by being average. English press made him a target that meant that every goal was over analysed for hints of error. Even this video cites Ronaldo’s hat trick. Like Ronaldo’s not merely one of the best of all time. Elite. Barthez was elite.

Barthez had a bad second season at United, but he was a great keeper. That inconsistency puts him behind Schmeichel and Van der Sar. To be honest I think he was the best with the ball at his feet that United ever had between the sticks and appreciate his willingness to rush for crosses, through balls ect. De Gea has the appearance and clean sheet records at United, he even has the save reflexes that make him head an shoulders above most keepers, but to me Barthez rounds out my top 3 United keepers since the 90s.

The thing is the people who converse about football these days are Brits or Premier-League-centered people. All these people are very biased towards Barthez achievements at/with ManU. He was not at his prime there; he was certainly declining. They also compare him to Schmeichel, who is one of the greatest. Barthez, in his prime, was brilliant, and he was so for a number of years, not just one season. One of the best ever, in a top 15 or even a top 10 without hesitation. He has done stuff on his line that Schmeichel could not do, IMO.

It really annoys me when fans confidently claim Yashin as one of the greatest ever goalkeepers. Almost no one outside of the former USSR or under the age of 70 has actually seen him play 1 game - in person or on screen! Let alone enough of his career to form a solid judgement There are a couple of 5 minutes compilations of him competently dealing with some routine shots/situations on youtube, and that's it. Compared to the likes of Buffon, Neuer and other greats from let's say the 80s/90s onwards etc whose entire careers are recorded, available to watch and remembered by a significant proportion of fans I mean there's a chance he could have been one of the greatest, but really it's all just hearsay. He's a myth that football fans cite because they've heard some pretentious types eulogise about him and want to come across as knowledgeable

I think overall contribution he's definitely top 5 but the problem is with smaller goalkeepers when they lose a fraction of a second on their rushes or jumping they tend to struggle a little bit because they're already undersized to begin. Jose Reina was similar to Liverpool he adjusted later on to learn how to play a little smarter but when these smaller goalkeepers lose a little bit of athleticism that they've relied on they usually have a terrible couple of seasons trying to adjust 2 things a fraction of a second slower

Yeah I respect that, I think the lack of consistency in his later years is what makes many have a low opinion of him. Personally I would put him above Alisson, Ederson and Lloris. As is said in the video, I reckon he was a bit of a trailblazer in terms of goalies playing with the ball at their feet, and a lot of modern keepers have been able to learn from some of the mistakes he made. And, for 3/4 years I believe he was widely considered to be the best in the world, from the World Cup up until the end of his first season with Utd, where it all started to go down hill!

I'll answer both your comments here. So I think a disproportionate amount of his howlers came towards the end of his career, which coincidently was shorter than might be expected for a keeper. They were also high profile as he was playing for Man Utd. I feel that this leads many to completely discounting and forgetting about the outstanding performances he put in at key moments for teams earlier in his career: The champions league final v Ac Milan, France 98 and Euro 2000, the 00/01 season for Utd. However, with that being said a lot of the reasons why I love Barthez and he is my favourite keeper, are emotional rather than Logical: memories of watching him play for France as a child, his larger than life personality and unique character, his fearless and flamboyant style on the pitch etc.
