I'm amazed by his voice and ashamed that I didn't know him before though he's a "compatriot" of mine. I sing classical, too and I'm so impressed by the airiness of his voice's sound! Magnificent!

I agree. The DVD production is musically the finest. The humor is there, too. (Ptolemy shower scene for example).

It's absolutely a bird. :) But because Cesare and the bird in hiding keep answering to each other, it can be presented as a kind of rivalry between the voice and the violin. This kind of contests was popular at that age, correct me if I'm wrong. (In the movie Farinelli you can see one between F and a trombone.)

Love the interplay with the violinist. Very good. Is that violin actually written like that? I ask because I detect a very Scandanavian bowing.
@Birty006 жыл бұрын
If you mean the ornaments she's playing, they are partly written like that but applying some variations for the reprise (da capo). The production - one of my favourites - has been presented in Copenhagen, Denmark - so the Scandinavian traditions are not by any chance, well spotted. :)

Is that michael maniaci next to him??

Andreas Scholl - needless to say something about his great performance. Best violin player too. But i don't love this kind of "modern" productions. Costumes, stage-outfit are strange to me.
@GillyWhitfootHaysend7 жыл бұрын
Not as strange as the 2012 Salzburg production, though. What a mess that was.

Uh, the only thing I don't like about it is that in Italian lingo Julius Caesar is Giulio Cesare... nothing wrong with any Mr. Giulios and Mr. Cesares alive in Italy, but Julius Caesar is the greatest man in human history whom I adore as god, and being told that he is actually Giulio (I know some Mr. Giulio who are often very earthly and homey) well, it's difficult to get used to it. No offence meant to the fabulous Mr. Scholl, by any chance anyway.

Sorry amonasro100, transposing the baroque imbroglio into the contemporary world, is the topic of my critic not Haendel music itself. Jules Cesar opera depict the brother and the sister, Ptolémée and Cléopâtre, quarrel piercingly the Pharaonic power and the favours of the Roman occupant. What we see here is a poor adaptation of the historial context. It is not enough to distribute kalachnikovs to the extras to depict the confrontation in the heart of the Middle East of rival imperialisms.
