As a kid I would listen to my parents' vinyl recording of "Porgy & Bess" over & over again. "Summertime" was & still is my favorite track from that album. I have heard the song performed by a wide variety of artists & this version, by Satchmo & the incomparable Miss Ella, is the very best rendition of the song ever made, IMO. For one thing, while Mr. raspy voice, that I loved all my life, had perfect pitch ! He was perfect contrast with Ella, who was also perfect, sang just like a bell......I think of them both quite often, and my small nothing brag, is that I got to sit on his lap as a child, and the thrill of Louis coming to town, on the back of a truck blowing that amazing horn, in 50s Louisiana......god I miss them both.
