Thanks for this, Andre. Is it possible to have regular phase/series/coil split/pickup select switching as well as the Hyperswitch, but use the Hyperswitch for unconventional options on the fly? i.e. use a regular 5-way, but activate the Hyperswitch to get selections like bridge and neck outer coils in or out of phase etc? Also (I've asked SD without a reply yet) might it be possible to program something like the Airstep pedal to select different choices to what the Hyperswitch selects 'normally'?

Andre - The North/South of the options does not refer to the position of the coils in the guitar. The South refers to the coils with the screws and the North refers to the coils with the slugs. On most neck Humbuckers, the screws are closer to the neck of the guitar. On most bridge humbuckers, the screws are closer to the bridge. This obviously does not apply to Peter Greene ;).

I have a Musicman with a simliar system - but that requires an external (web / browser plugin) App / USB connection. It was difficult to get to work on some computers / OS (just to get the app from the browser connect to USB). It had some way to do / configure stuff on the guitar without the App and save presets, but that mode wasn't very intuitive. I have the Musicman currently in storage but this makes me want to pull it out :) I also have a couple guitars with ten way switches - a 5 way with an upper / lower position (bank) and normal PU selector / multiple mini switch combinations. The 10 way is hard for me to remember as I don't use that guitar every day. The Multi-Switch thing works fine and more intuitive the way I have it set up but yea: Definitely not usable for live music setting. I wasn't aware of this product but I do share your enthusiasm for this. If I pull out a guitar and don't remember or like the switching - just go into the app. Fantastic. I will need to have this added to some of the builds I have coming up :) And I do agree: it would be great if these things have some fallback mode to work without an app. Because just like a Browser Plugin - no smartphone app is guaranteed to work on the next version of the Smartphone OS upgrade, Bluetooth version in your next phone etc.

In all my builds I’m putting 3x DP3T switches in (I had a circuit board made up to keep it neat, but that’s not necessary), it’s basically the Brian May wiring but a bit more compact. This gives access to all the combinations all the time, without you having to choose 5, it’s a fraction of the price, completely passive, and I won’t have to rip it out in 3-5 years when SD stop supporting the app on the then current iOS. If I am going to have a battery in the guitar it’ll be for something way more interesting. YMMV 🤘🏼😄

Was looking into one of these for an intense mod project I'm doing, but a 10-way Freeway switch makes way more sense to me. In fact I am wiring in three or four EQ 'presets' on a different switch with corresponding knobs for Q and amount/shape just using a simple LCR filter (inductor, capacitor, resistor) in different configurations. All fully passive, all analog, all in realtime. No app or bluetooth gimmicks. I never want to be tied to my phone to access anything in my guitars. But it does speak to the drive some people have to be on their phone all the time for everything on a marketing level, so congrats to Duncan for this, I'm sure it will sell. It is a matter of time before support is dropped for every app. Be it in 1 or 30 years, this app will not run on whatever we are using then. Analog lasts forever.

Certainly an interesting way to access numerous tone options. I've been recently experimenting with the opposite approach, reducing my guitar to having a single bridge humbucker pickup. I'm doing all my tone selecting by pressing one button on my HX Stomp for a Preset with all the different EQ, Effects, Amp, Cab Blocks, etc. selected. I'm not sure how well this approach will work, but it does avoid thinking about all kinds of switches and settings when playing.

I'm all about innovations in the guitar world, but strangely, I had a mixed feeling about this. It's not about having a circuit board or a 9volt battery in the guitar (I do prefer passive wiring over active, but I won't shy away from trying them), my concern is more on the long term support of the app. Smartphones are constantly being updated with new firmware (Android versions especially), but as long as SD keeps the app supported, then it won't be much of a concern. SD could also use USB cable for configurations through PC/Mac. Since Fishman managed to squeeze a Micro-USB port for battery charging on the Greg Koch Tele signature pickup set, I'm sure SD can manage that as well, with the assets and budgets that they have. Tech wizardry aside, if the price of the switch is too much for multiple guitars, one could just use a "test bench" guitar for pickups and configurations test. They could just then migrate their favorite configurations for a particular set of pickups, to the intended guitar with passive wiring.

The noise when connected is perhaps on purpose to indicate BT connection. Does the switch "ready to connect" time out and turn itself off? How easy would it be, if the player flipped the switch a couple of times on stage without thinking, for someone else to connect and change settings? AT least the noise would alert you to the problem. Sounds like a great idea though... I would like a separate switch to initiate BT connect.... something below the surface that would require a pin or a pick to push. Your forward ideas are also great. I think though they are trying to go for a "no body mod" install.
@mathkrGames Жыл бұрын
A cool feature would be if you could match the levels per setting. I've had live situations where I avoided certain pickup configurations that I'd usually like during practice because a slight drop in level would mean that I couldn't hear myself through the mix. You could also use this for a dedicated "solo pickup setting" to drive your amp really hard. Basically a programmable clean boost/attentuator per switch position.

Hey Andre have you ever checked out the line 6 variax guitars. Alot of what you are describing is available in those guitars. When they first dropped metal guitarist had a problem with the digital modeling aspect of the guitars but admittedly on high gain its reading a signal from a piezo pickup and being processed so it lacked pick attack. They did update it later to emulate pick attack better. Either way it's flexibility is great honestly and has been great in my learning journey especially since I can also just throw it in any tuning but it's been fun to "tone search" with and mess with the models pickups placements and all that. There is 2 models I think would fit you well one is the jtv-69, the other is the jtv-89f. The 69 is a standard strat style guitar with a two point trem and the 89f is a super strat with 24 frets and a Floyd rose style trem because I know you also enjoy floating trems as well. It's made from the same company that produces Yamaha guitars I believe either I love your content and great coverage on the hyper switch when I saw that in namm footage it blew me away that and cream guitars lol.

@Andre Fludd I get that I think if you ever see one on the used market it is worth looking at. I got mine for 800 like new on reverb. Now you'd need to get a connector for your computer to use workbench because that's where it truly shines as far as customization. You won't get a better sounding acoustic model through a piezo than what the variax managed to do the resonance that it has is like a mic on the acoustic. Like that has gotten me gigs doing hired gun because of the sound of that acoustic no lie only two gigs based of that acoustic sound lol. I am not sure you'd like the neck though both of them are medium to kind of thin and the 89 has a much flatter radius just in case you ever think about trying one out.

@@andrefludd I’m surprised nobody has tried connecting both together yet (to my knowledge) being that they’re such popular pickups. It could be a total dud of an experiment, but imagine if someone cracks the code on getting them to work together! 😱🤯🥳 I personally think it could realistically work being than neither depends on using the app once setup. If you take two “set it and forget it” pieces of guitar tech, it should theoretically work no differently than pairing the Hyperswitch with any other pickup. It should almost certainly work in a guitars where the Fluence pickups are installed stock, like the two Polyphia guitars, because the wiring the Hyperswitch might be more of a straightforward process. However, I see no reason that the Hyperswitch shouldn’t work with some fiddling where Fluence pickups are installed on any guitar aftermarket. Feel free to give this experiment a shot if you are so inclined! 😊

Quick question: When you say that even when disconnected the last setting is saved, I am assuming that you still need to have a *working* 9 volts battery right? Because a minor hitch I'm thinking is that if you for whatever reason don't realize the 9V battery is dead you would not only have to change the battery but also connect it to bluetooth at least once to save a present on it but let me know if that is somehow *not* the case
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
Yes, you always have to have a working 9v battery. You’d know it’s dead if you weren’t getting any sound
@Zundfolge Жыл бұрын
Something I've long wanted to see done on active pickups (and now this switch) is to replace the 9V battery with a Li-Ion battery and a USB-C port so you can charge it via USB instead of having to open the guitar and replace the battery. I'm going to bet someone has already done this but I didn't find anything on a quick DDG search. As for being able to switch presets, it would be cool to have a push-pull pot set to where when you pull the pot it becomes a 5 way rotary switch and when its pushed it returns to a vol or tone again. Of course you also need to add LEDs or something so you can tell which preset you're in as well. I would have loved this switch years ago when most of my guitars were HSH setup, but I've got to the point where I've been craving simple over complicated and my favorite set up these days is a humbucker in the bridge, single coil in the neck, a 3 way Les Paul style switch and one vol pot.

You were fortunate that you have a tech who was able to connect this to your existing piezo 9V battery. For those having to install this into a guitar that does not have a 9V battery already in it (active pickups or a Sustainiac, etc.), this is a problem. Not all cavities will have room for a battery and the effort needed to route out a battery compartment is pretty extreme. Even if you have room in the control cavity, it probably means you have to at least take off the strings and pickguard on a lot of guitars to change the battery. Bottom routed guitars are a little easier, but those cavities tend to be smaller.

I have a strat copy, set up like your Vigier. HSH But each humbucker has a 3 way mini switch series/split/parallel, I’ve found push pulls to be clumsy, but I had 2 guitars I didn’t want to drill holes into, and since I really use only parallel and series, they work fine with push/pull. What’s really cool about the hyper switch is the reverse coil polarity ability, for example your Tele duel PU sound could be hum canceling! 🙂. I don’t need the quack of typical 2 & 4 strat sound, & I used a Lace Sensor “red” for the single coil, which has very little 60 cycle hum, but 17 gauss! So all 5 way settings are power settings, pretty unique 2&4 sounds, and all drive my amp input hard, as I like. But if the hyper switch had existed, I’d find room for the battery, so many options on one axe! I only have 1 battery guitar, it has a sustainer, and I’m happy with my sounds. If I really want to get more options, I pick up my 3 humbucker PU custom Firebird, stacked vol/tone for each but another Seymour Duncan product, circuit board (tiny!) but no battery 4 sounds per PU tiny dip size switches on each PU bezel (PU mounting bracket). But still with all that, I cannot reverse a coil polarity like the hyper switch. Adding that would give you 24 coil options, as well as Vol/tone variations Awesome!🙂. I’m sorry I cannot recall the name of the switch bezels, $35 each, but a non 9v battery option for multiple sounds is available

I think this would work very well in my St. Vincent guitar, it has 3 mini humbuckers and is wired in an interesting way. 1, 2, and 3 are bridge, middle, neck respectively, but then 4 is all three pickups in parallel, and then 5 is bridge and neck in parallel. I had been considering upgrading the pickups but was debating how I would wire it, if I'd keep this layout or go more traditional, but this could make all that irrelevant. Positions 4 and 5 sound really cool, almost single coil-like. By the way, have you ever tried a St. Vincent guitar? I feel like there's some things you'd absolutely love (but also probably really hate lol), though the models can vary a lot.

@stormblast973 Your price is probably correct, but as I understand it, switching pots just turn one coil on or off. The mini switches allow use of either coil or both as series or parallel. This is much more flexible with 4 options per pickup rather than two. I also own an Ibanez AR420 with mini toggle switches that give you three options for each pickup with only one coil available in the single coil setting. I don't mind the idea of a 9V battery. I've had guitars with pre-amps in them that I loved. In this case it's not the technology itself but my response to it that puts me off: I'm not good with apps when it comes to guitars.

Interesting, but I am not convinced. 5 pos Schaller Megaswitch is all I need, totally passive. Soldering Iron is not that hard to use. Thank you for sharing your experimentations, keep on doing the awesome job !

Thanks for this 🤙! Can this be used with passive pickups? I'm wondering where the 9 volt would go... ok you answered that at 20:20. 😆

Btw, soldering is really fun 😁 building a amp kit and stuff like that is super rewarding, even if you’re a digital guy (I use a kemper and fractal fm3).

I do know how to solder but I’m not great at it. It’s more the time it takes to follow instructions on a wiring diagram, making mistakes, going back to fix it, I don’t have the patience

i have a question what if you bought two of these switches for two different guitars would the app remember two different settings on that one app. Or would you have to have that app downloaded twice for each guitar.

Oooh I look forward to hear your take on that Khaler bridge: I find those interesting since it's one of the few and the far more common option for very extended range guitars (8+ strings) as those usually cannot be found with Floyd based tremolo bridges but Khaler instead, but outside of that it seems like a forgotten-by-time type of tremolo bridge

What happens when the battery dies? Does it revert to factory settings? Or does it retain what you programmed?
@CorpseChords Жыл бұрын
this is cool! so this works with any pickup? might get this in my 7 string with Lundgren M7, will this also fit in most guitars?
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
IDK if it works with active pickups, but it works with any normal passive pickups. And it should fit most strat-style guitars with pick guards. It might fit others as well but I haven't tested that.

Does the switch revert to a switch when the battery dies? Is there a way to go to a default mode when the app is no longer supported(which will 100% happen sooner than later).
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
No, when the battery dies it dies. idk about the future of the app you'd have to talk to SD.

Does this have some sort of 'user-only lock'? Could you imagine playing a gig only to have some unscrupulous person in the audience connect with their copy of the app and change your settings from their phone/device?
@DragisaBoca Жыл бұрын
Cool to see something new, would love to try one but would never add any active electronics to my guitar... I want to be able to play it all the time.
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
This is a pretty common statement. But really, you get used to it. Changing a battery once every 6months or whatever. It just becomes normal like changing strings.
@kitoyobeni1 Жыл бұрын
Does the power switch have settings for series vs parallel wiring, both within the humbucker and in multi pickup settings? I couldn't see that from your app shots.
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
I think so...they don't use the word series and parallel but I think it might be "standard" and "reverse" in the app. Def double check before purchasing.

You're probably can't link to another device once it's been paired so you'd have to forget device if you need to change phones . At least that needs to be implemented because a savvy ex at a gig could wreak havoc .

This produced a very adverse reaction in me, but I understand why you find it useful. For studio work, no doubt it's useful. But for playing live, I can't quickly and accurately adjust a normal 5 way switch, let alone a 5 way switch, where I have to do constant mental gymnastics on what position does what (as I would definitely mess with it a lot). The battery is the last nail in the coffin for me. If you are interested in a similar idea, gibson had a run of les paul moderns, where you could do very similar things with small switches in the control cavity (not this flexible of course). The only benefit of that, is keeping it passive.

Really cool piece of gear! What I miss the most is some switching system that gets away with mechanical switching. Something touch sensitive, like a touch pad. Imagine you could switch pickups by tapping on a sensor assigned to it. Imagine something like a trackpad adjusting both tone and volume at the same time, one axis for each function. That sort of technology has been available and affordable at least for 40 years, I recall there were some implementations of touch sensitive controls on some instruments back in the '80s, but you never see it anywhere anymore, except perhaps on keyboards. Unfortunately the guitar world is too conservative.

personally i like the tactility of a classic switch, the more snappy and satisfying yet smooth the better. however i recognize everybody has individual preferences and different use cases - it'd be great to see
@MaxRyles Жыл бұрын
If they had an option to set one or more pickups in series, this would be perfect on my Dingwall. Being able to experiment with split coil and position combinations would be a dream! Would I ever use a split middle pickup running parelel with the neck, and have those two run series into the bridge. Maybe not but it's strange combinations like that that makes this so interesting to me.
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you can do that.

you could buy only a single Hyperswitch, find out the right config for one guitar and then take it out again. now that you know your dream-config for that instrument, you can just wire your guitar up in the same config and the Hyperswitch is free to find out the perfect config for the next guitar. this can be repeated. regarding this, it's really great value as a sorta diagnostic tool.
@andrefludd Жыл бұрын
I explain that exact use case in the video.

For the "improvements " you mention get one of your Parker's hooked up to a Roland VG99... all the midi and split functions are already in existence

This is fantastic The guitar is a fairly simple electromagnetic device, and it would be great if there were more standard options existing like onboard effects, stereo outputs etc etc Of course ergonomics are a consideration as well as visual clutter, but it’s an electric instrument- why not take advantage

So you can’t do the ‘flicking the pick up selector switch quickly while a notes feeding back’ trick without triggering the Bluetooth? That’s a huge flaw.
@priyaldezoysa572 Жыл бұрын
It would be good if Seymour Duncan make a compatible version with a Freeway switch, which allows me to have 6 different (fixed combinations) with 2 humbuckers, or maybe Freeway need to make a 6 way that is compatible with this system.

On principle, I really like this, and I'm glad it exists. Would I personally use it? No. I use superswitches so I can get inside outside coils on 2 and 4. 4 gives me a tele ish sound, 2 is a little more stratty.

This is very cool, honestly wished Line 6 would make the Variax pick up system available, instead of having to buy the guitar they have. Sometimes, you have that fave guitar but lacking something, wish I could use the variax stuff on any guitar while using my helix. One could only dream.
