It is so inexplicably frustrating that he held this lecture in the 1990's and people have known this since the 1950's and 60's and cities are still built for cars.

I first saw this series on the local government access channel when I lived in San Antonio. That was back in the 1990's, right around the time it was recorded. I am so glad to have it available to share, all on one video. Thank you for posting this. It is important.

It is astonishing how correct this man was. Three decades into the future, and we’ve only continued to make the same mistakes.

I think as more Americans have the ability to travel, they will see how other countries do it and will see all of the mistakes America made since the end of WW2. I changed after I traveled to Japan and saw how their big cities and small towns were created and how even in places with bad architecture there is still a good sense of place.

33:56 - I don't even think that kind of suburban housing gives you privacy. The front lawns are open (and no doubt you have to mow them regularly or you are fined by the condo or municipality) and there are no fences out front. It must be like living in a goldfish bowl. Living in a city apartment gives you much more privacy, if that's what you want, although of course you also have much more scope to go outside and be sociable with people in the city if you feel like it.

It looks like the house itself serves as a barrier. You have completely private area in the backyard, but the front is open to interaction. There's no point in sitting at a private front porch behind a wall. There's all sense in sitting there if you can see the neighbor (If the steret is walkable, of course.), and you still have the back porch, I guess, for privacy outdoors.

@@dmitrilebedev8635 I look at google map street views of American suburban estates and there is very rarely a SINGLE person visible, let alone "interaction" or "sitting at a private front porch!" Absolutely sterile environments.

1:13:06 I remember a recent TIME magazine that spoke of longevity, and what it said was, IIRC, that cities were better for aging, because of the feeling of community, of friendship. His words ring so true, so much time later. I just turned 23. My hope is that when I retire, our cities will be adapted for retirement

wow i've read all of his books but always though he was a women. I just assume from reading the name it was a women. Anyway whats sad is the date of this lecture. About 30yrs ago and i don't see any result. I mean they have been building a few new Old style traditional neighborhoods but usually they are too small to have any inpack and are usually just a novalty. Since this lecture nothing has change. The developers have the power and they don't care. They don't want to hear about any alternatives.

+Tampa0123456789 If developers have no incentive to do anything differently, they will always develop with the bottom line in mind. Fees are a HUGE cost of development here in California. This means that the developer is more incentivized in the opposite direction: stick with the tried and true method of squeezing in units and making dollars.

Is it not the regulations that constrict the developer. He says somewhere around the 25min mark that it's more profitable to have a mix of residential and urban

There is a new community called 'Valley Ranch' being built near my town by two large intersecting highways. I saw what has been completed so far and the layout is absolutely Stupid. Just like at the 18:00 mark, the shopping centre separates itself from the already existing neighborhood right next to it by constructing a large canal with no connections and they yet built a large road that funnels to a large New suburban neighborhood being constructed with side walks that go nowhere. The stores don't really attach to each other either, rather highway-like large roads [ with very little traffic] surround them.
