Nick Robinson, I think that's going a bit far. Segovia amped up the guitar's image and made it a serious concert instrument but Barrios had been doing that in Latin America he just didn't have the funds to go on long concert tours like Segovia. Segovia was a lot of hubris and hot air really. He thought he was fantastic but Barrios blew him out of the water when they met. The guitar was on a one-way trip thanks to the likes of Len Williams, his son John, Julian Bream, and a host of young players who were seriously studying the guitar without a whiff of or from Segovia. The result would have taken a bit longer but was inevitable even if there was no Segovia.

@Hypnus96 жыл бұрын
One of the most outstanding things about Maestro Segovia was his utter and complete mastery of the dynamic range of not only entire pieces and sections of them, but of individual notes in the course of a piece. The man was an orchestra! In the course of viewing this wonderful television performance of Herr Segovia , a Biblical proverb came to mind: " Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these,' for it is not wise to ask such things." I believe that the late Rock Maestro, Frank Zappa, actually undertook to speak of such things in his own way, taking a dim view of what he called "lazy dogmas of impossibily," where someone will take and respect the person who is doing the miraculous in any given pursuit, only to rob themselves through such complacency and lack of faith through not believing in themselves, and sadly enough, never transcending mediocrity in the pursuit they truly love. Even Jesus Christ said, "Those who follow Me will do what I too have been doing, yea even greater things shall they do." That said, let us proceed to greater heights as artists and as individuals. Amen.

I once put my ten year old hand-made Japanese guitar in the loft. The instrument was in a good quality case but the loft was not heated in the winter nor aired in the hot summer. At length, after fifteen years, I recovered the guitar to the living quarters to resume its musical life. It was not a happy instrument the sound was very subdued and I thought it would be permanently damaged. But after two weeks living in normal ambient temperature and regular humidity the instrument gradually came back to life and now produces a rich, deep sound but I do not think this guitar is as capable of such a bright sound as before it's incarceration. I would guess that if the top and back dry to some extent, they will shrink and cause tension in the box which could alter the sound in a way which could not be achieved in a new guitar.

This is a rather hard to watch performance, however, due to the "ground hum" and misalignment of the audio and video. It's what survives I suppose. A bit like 270 year print music of Bach, Scarlatti, etc. It is exact, but still just a shadow of the greatness that created it.
