Here’s an old record by Pipe Major Andrew Macintosh (born in 1891), a notable Pipe Major in the Scots Guards starting in from 1917. The only evidence we have as far as the date is concerned is just the year, 1918, and it was produced on Imperial / Bulldog records. Being 1918, this record is quite interesting. First of all, given that this recording predates omnidirectional recording, a second set of drones was very often used in order to capture the sound of the drones with their harmonic depths compared to a solo where the drones may be excruciatingly faint. However, rather than having another piper play the drones, it’s more than likely the studios used a primitive overdubbing process for the time. Thing is, the drones creak at the exact same time, and both sets of drones strike up at the same time. Plus, the two sets of pipes sound identical, so this could well be Andrew Macintosh assisting himself! Also at the end, the (overdubbed in this case) drones stop way before the original track (i.e. way before the drones and chanter), so this is another dead giveaway that there are two sets of drones going. Also you’ll hear some beats, or a slowish volume-vibrato if you will, in the harmonics of the bass drone, especially Low E if that note ever existed on a pipe chanter.
The tunes are the 2/4 march "The 93rd Highlanders’ Farewell to Edinburgh", the strathspey "Rose among the Heather", and the reel, "Jenny Dang the Weaver".
Usually when a favorite vocal artist uploads something I would often upload something in return to "cash back", as it were, their fandom. In this case, if my favorite singer Lauren Alvarez were to upload a single she was ready to upload today, I would have heard from my two ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE SINGERS BOTH! Being both Lauren herself as well as Madilyn Bailey. But because Lauren had something else going on, but I did hear from Madilyn, I had the feeling something would work out with one of them. And so it did, haha.
Enjoy and don’t be afraid to comment.
