Not that there's anything wrong with people of the LGBTQ community or anything, but I am a straight white male, and I watched a lot of PBS growing up. Looking back now, I'm glad I did. Some of the stuff they have on Disney channel and other kids networks is really stupid. Heck, I still find some of the shows like Arthur that I watched as a kid entertaining at 19. I think that PBS played a huge role in how I grew up. My parents had to force me to get a phone, and I still don't use social media other than youtube. This is why it makes me pissed off at trump. I really wish more conservatives would step up to the guy. From either party's standpoint he's a total idiot who apparently had no idea that when you became president you had to do this thing called "work". The funding getting cut out of all these programs is horrifying, cause trump clearly has no idea what impact it will have. All he cares about is nuking ISIS and North Korea to oblivion.
@leahclifford45597 жыл бұрын
Theres just a dumb mentality amoung some people that entertainment for children shouldnt be given maximum effort because their sense of taste is still growing and developing and theyd be perfectly fine with dumbed down trite. But PBS thought that it could take a child's developing sense of taste and get children interested in literature, art, science or just learning how to be kind and understanding to the world around them. PBS always put effort in.
@armchairrocketscientist49347 жыл бұрын
One should never, ever discredit children. Children are way smarter than many make them out to be. TV should be challenging their minds. What I love about PBS is that it was both entertaining to me as a kid and it taught a variety of topics, like math, english, science, etc. One of my favorite shows from PBS, Arthur, was something that everyone, including my parents enjoyed watching. It was very well written, and rather than teaching science or something like that, it actually taught social skills.

In NE PA, the PBS station was an innovator by operating 24 hours a day (back in the 1970s +). After 11:00 PM, the station ran older (er) movies from the 30s, 40s, etc, mostly black and white. As an insomniac, it was a way to fill sleepless nights, especially in those brutal NE PA winters. Later, my children enjoyed Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Sesame Street, etc. There is much to be said for public TV and public radio. As Andrew Rannells said, it's a way for those who might not ever get to see theatrical productions, opera, symphonies, and a host of other worthwhile endeavors, to have some exposure to them.

I grew up watching PBS and continue to watch it to this day as they offer great programming. I do not think that PBS will go away they will just have to gain more sponsors and donations from the public. I know that we would not want them to go the commercial route but they might have to do that in order to gain money for programming.

Like not just the Broadway, Old British comedies, and Masterpiece theater (which we did /do still love) we also seemed to prefer PBS kids to like... regular kids tv? Or we only had access to it ? (why do so many of us young gays end up hanging out in our grandma's living room? And why did we all love being there? I thought I was the only weirdo who did this but apparently I am not??)
