Kinda shocked that they don’t wear gloves to handle such precious documents. Every contact with fingers is going to leave oil.

Gloves are more likely to soak up oil overtime, so it is better to not use them

Right, but if you wear gloves, you can't really feel the paper and are more likely to tear it. That's why many people who handle rare documents of any kind touch them with clean and dry hands
