Blades are the best clubs to start with. Right away you will understand that squaring up the Clubface is your goal for a good swing. When the sweet spot is hit for the first time, and the ball flys straight out, your very proud indeed. I learned this way and I’m sure you did as well Andrew. When I started out I had a set of game improvement irons but practiced off a net/mat in my backyard with a MP-67. You get the feedback and super small face. Aim small miss small is my philosophy!

Bought my set 3-PW in 2005, have played them regularly with a few shaft changes ever since. They are not forgiving irons, which is fine, but they a butter smooth when you nail that small sweet spot. I'll never give them up even as I age.. hopefully one of my children will play them one day. Thanks for the post AA!

I’ve had these clubs for probably a decade playing on and off during this time and I love them. These clubs give you so much feedback, When you pure the clubs it feels amazing, when you get it wrong the clubs let you know with some finger stings. For a beginner these are far from ideal but will grow with the golfer!

I still have a set of Yoro MP 32 3-pw in almost new condition, excellent irons . I switch out my basically new sets of Yoro MP 29 s and 14s iron sets. All 3 my top 3 ever made for myself. They can shoot under par to this day if you have the game. The Yoro models are the best with better feel because of the copper inlay and better spec heads ect.

I love this sort of content! I learned to play as a kid with old Wilson blades. They were brutal, but I learned how to find the middle of the club and soften my grip. When I started to play more I had some cheap cavity backs, but kept the blades to practice and improve at the range. I figured if I could hit a long iron blade flush I could hit anything!

A used set of mp32 irons where my first set of golf clubs. I feel that the negative reinforcement from mishits did help my ball striking improve at an accelerated pace, they are easy to chunk, and a shot of the toe and you'll be 20+ yards short of your target distance. Although you can get away with a thin shot here and there, you simply can't get by with subpar striking. I think it was a benefit to learn on these, people learned on irons more difficult than these generations ago, so it's not that radical of a concept. At my level I have far more confidence in long irons than my peers, and I feel the countless hours spent practicing/learning with a players iron helped keep my swing on plane and more consistent than it otherwise would have been.

I played a lot of golf as a junior and then took a looong (25+ years) break due to work interfering. When I came back about 8 months ago I bought a cheap set of Brosnan clubs to get me back in the swing as they are what i used as a kid. I hated them due to the clunky nature (My junior Brosnan clubs were much closer to blades), no feedback and no ability to work the ball. I would either block left or right but always straight. I picked up a very well maintained set of MP-32 which I absolutely loved hitting. Feedback on these clubs and feel on centered strike was phenomenal. As soon as I started hitting them my golf improved no end and I really started working on club path and face control. Since then I have been playing better than I did as a youngster. I would highly recommend a bladish type club as starter set. There is so much variety in clubs now but I feel beginners playing GI clubs doesn't quite cut the cake. You need feedback as a starter. If you don't know where you are striking the ball how can you improve? I think GI clubs are more for people who know how to play but need the extra distance or forgiveness due to factors beyond their control like age or injury etc.

Playing blades as a beginner helped me progress massively. When I was first learning to play lead guitar, my teacher told me to try and learn hard fast lead guitar solo's as everything else would seem easier to play.......same can be said for blades.

There's no doubt about it. With Mizuno especially, you can tell where you're making contact with a blade/player's cavity and that has only helped me with my ballstriking. I've played golf my whole life but only when I started using a set of Mizuno blades did I really start to figure out how to swing and make contact with the ball. I stayed away for years because I thought I wasn't good enough to use them. Just gotta practice.

I bought a set of these mp32's brand new back in the day, 3 - sw. I recently asked my golf coach "should I buy new modern irons?" He said.... "you know you need to hit these sweet everytime, if you buy modern iron's you will think you can hit them from anywhere on the club face, therefore not making sweet strikes" I believe in his views and continue to play them. Such a beautiful playing experience shot after shot. Yes they are a tough iron to hit, but the rewards are enormous. I am playing off 5 and wonder if modern iron's would lower my handicap.... my life is full of wonders !! Happy golfing everyone !! Jamie

Hi Jamie, difficult questions to answer, some golfers will benefit from the challenge of a muscle back iron, others it will make the game far more difficult than it should be. Go with your gut instinct and the performance that you are achieving. Regards Andrew

Thank you for your reply, It might sound weird.... but I have such an effection with these clubs, they are like a women, when it's going well, its going really well, but when it's going bad, it's really bad !! I don't want to be lured in to the sales pitch of "needing" new irons, I truly believe it would be more beneficial to spend the money on more coaching than new equipment, I feel a true strike is better than a new club !!

ive been playing golf for 5 years started on 26 handicap using chunky cavity backs after 2 years of handicap coming down and going back up i switched to a set of cobra amp forged pure blades they completely changed they way i play ive managed to get cut to a 13 handicap i will always play forged from now on the feedback you get is alot better

I bought my MP-32's back in 2005 to replace MX-23's - the clubs that made me fall in love with mizuno forgings. I loved the look of them, needed to go into an s300 and felt with lots of practice they would help improve my ball striking. I went from 14 to 8 hcap today and my trusty 32's are still in my bag. I've no doubt they're not that forgiving but when you pure one it's a feeling that really is so hard to beat. Tempted by the jpx 919 forged I must say but it'll be hard to replace them. One thing I know is I'll never part with my 32's.

Properly fitted (length & lie) forged blades, particularly any Mizuno blades, provide the best feel and will outperform any cast club, hands down!

Still play these today. 2, 4-PW. When I was fitted we de-lofted the 4 iron 1 degree to give an even 4 degree spread and left out the 3 iron. Haven't found anything that matches the feel.

Just ordered a brand new MP 32 two iron. If the 2 iron works for me, Its a great idea to pull out the three that i hit so purely off the tees. I may not need it anymore. Time will tell.

That cut muscle design, my gosh was good ! The Mizuno 32 and 60 irons which had that cut muscle were maybe the best irons ever. Awesome irons ! Still good today if you can find a set.

I grew up in the 70s and my dad gave me some MacGregor blades which I learned on and played well with. When my son starts playing he can have my MP 69s to learn with. I think golf shaft, lie and weighting is more important than iron design, being fitted for the right shaft can help anybody find the middle if they have any inkling of athleticism.

Just picked up 3-PW on ebay with Nippon NS Pro 950s. Either my ball-striking has improved tremendously or these are actually pretty easy to hit. I can even hit the 3-iron...most of the time! Wonderful feel, of course. But not big drop-offs on mishits, really. PW and 9-iron have such great touch around the greens. I got them just as an experiment, really, to see if I could even hit them. But I've been gaming them for a few rounds and they're performing really well. And my god, do they ever look good in the bag.

I would suggest starting out with old blades to anybody. I'm 24, and I started out with my grandpa's set of Wilson Blue Ridge Sam Snead irons. Figure out how to consistently hit well with blades, and you will consistently hit well with anything

I had always used cavity backs/ rescue 3,4,5 Adams. Sold to me on the premise they were forgiving? Replaced them with 2014 Mizuno JPX EZ forged PW-4 with a 3 rescue, I know they aren’t blades but are a step in the right direction. They are slightly harder to hit but that is in my opinion a good thing because it has made me focus. I now feel I am playing golf not the clubs and a lot more consistent! My club won’t hit a bad shot i will but to improve i need to know when I do.

I know this is an old video but I still own and play my MP-32's. Another manufacture's 7i goes further --- well because it's 2 degree's stronger so yeah. I'll probably purchase a backup set of them as well.

Hi, I begun with Mizuno T Zoid Comp EZ. (forged) Great clubs, well balanced between feel, power (F7 33), accuracy and forgiveness. The set I play most at this time is the jpx 900 forged, but still playing the comp EZ too. I also own a set of mp 32 that a love. Less forgiving than the EZ and the jpx, but not that difficult. All those old clubs are really fantastic. The best feeling club is the mp 32, but the EZ and the jpx are not far away.

Hello Andrew, nice video as always. I believe there are pro's and cons starting golf and in general with blades. To start golf it would be easier to start with a club with a longer blade. I've got a set of MP33 that I still use, next to my set of MP15, they still feel and play amazing. The MP33 Pitchin wedge loft is 48 degrees to the 46 degrees of my MP15 pitching wedge. The 2 degrees difference throughout the sets gives me options to play with diffent set setups depanding on different courses and conditions, which I like. These iron sets feel and look almost the same over the ball. But nothing beats the look of a classic Mizuno blade in my opinion. Also love the MP32.

Learned golf in the early 90s on Pinseeker blades. Could never get used to chunky irons or cavity backs. Always return to blades. Get slagged rotten for it from the sheep.

I think that for most people, the idea that blades or smaller sized cavity back irons are difficult to hit is mostly in their head. If you start out hitting the big SGI or GI irons, anything smaller looks scary, but once most people get over that they might find they hit a smaller iron just as well - no worse no better. Many amateur golfers can hit their 3 wood better than their driver, yet the head of the driver is so much larger. Food for though. The only areas I really see "game improvement" irons actually improving the game of anyone is when they have trouble getting the ball airborne with any height resulting in the ball not going very far for them. GI and SGI irons will definitely help with in that area. If you have a slow swing speed GI irons might be for you; otherwise, they likely won't improve anything about your game.

I agree with you fully...i've been playing golf for 25 years(im 38 now) and throughout these years have been using GI/Midsize...in 2008 I bought a set of TOUR EDGE EX1 IRONS coz they offer distance and height...i had to stop playing golf in 2011 due to surgery on my left wrist...took up the game again in Jan 2017 with my T/E irons and have been playing consistently ever since. Recently,guys I play with have been telling me how good of a ball compressor I am and how I should switch to Blades,I thought they were crazy coz I could never for the life of me see myself hitting blade irons,those things looked like i'd never even hit it past 20m let alone getting them airborne. As recent as 2 weeks ago,a gent I recently met on the course and has turned out to be a great golfing buddy(plays off a 2) Saw me hit my irons and asked why I wasn't using blades coz of the way I compress the ball and my response was that Im shit scared of Blades and told him as well that I don't think I have what it takes to play those Irons. The man literally dared me to hit just 1 shot and on this 1 hole (a short 153m Par 3 and I chose a 9 Iron- MIZUNO MP4)...all he said was,swing this club exactly as you would your usual 9 Iron,firstly i was shit scared thinking i'm going to embarrass myself and hit a massive worm burner...To my absolute shock I hit THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IRON SHOT EVER IN MY LIFE😨😨 I honestly thought I was dreaming,I was in utter disbelief,I looked at that Iron like I have just been declared a fully fledged SAMURAI...The shot was so good that I asked to hit another ball from the same Tee Box and again I flushed it so good that I thought the club had escaped out of my hands. We played the subsequent 14 holes with his irons and instantly I was smitten...The way I loved those Irons and he could see just how much I was enjoying them(I shot 88 on the day but I wasn't really perturbed by my score I just loved the feel and response I was getting from those irons),he loaned me his second set of MIZUNO MP5 to try out with exact specs as his MP4...Last Sunday I shot 81 with only my first full game,today I shot 82 and I am hooked...I am now the biggest MIZUNO FAN,I am buying them from him. I want to lower my handicap to 5,as soon as im there,i am without doubt getting myself a set of MIZUNO MP 69 or better...I want the purest of the pure TOUR PLAYER MIZUNO,I will NEVER PLAY ANY OTHER BRAND but MIZUNO.

Really enjoyed the Classic Review. Played these clubs a couple of years ago and they're really amazing. Can you do a classic Driver test? Titleist 983K vs current day. Hit the blades fine but playing the 460cc head, i can't get consistent with it. Thinking of gaming a sub 400 driver.

The more I play, and test various clubs, the more I believe it doesn’t really matter. If I hit a crap strike with any type of iron, I seem to lose about the same number of yards. I heard somewhere recently, someone said cavity back Irons should be called distance improvement, not game.

hi andrew, i begin with the titleist dci981 (smal head to) and then after 2 years with hcp round 20 i switched to the mp 32. great clubs!...than the mp 68 and now the mp 18blade/sc set an the 3 mmcflihi. the mp 32 was the beginning of loving mizuno forging. an with the smal heads you learn to hit the ball staight! the mp 32 with my nippon modus 3 105s...i think, it's not great different to forged clubs of "today". greetings from germany 👍

I just pulled my MP32's out of the bag that I've been playing for 10 years. I will never get rid of them. I purchased a set of MP25's recently to replace them. What a great set of irons the 32's were. However I think any player starting out should have a nice forgiving set of cavity back irons. Nobody should start with a blade. I think you should work your way to a blade as you get better.

Great video. A bad shot is a bad shot no matter what type of iron you used. I have a 92 mph 6 iron swing speed and my miss is a hook. Personally for me, I would rather be shorter given my miss. Everyone knows a hook miss goes a mile, if I can be short when I miss, I would have better chances at saving par. Also, these GI irons and the offset drives me crazy. I find I play better with players irons than GI irons. I am an 80's shooter with about 10-12 rounds in the 70's, when I played Ping ie1's, I found I hooked them A LOT more.

I think it is all relative. If you were a new player from between 1940 to the mid to late 1970's these were the kinds of irons you would be using. The game of golf grew over that period, and I doubt if handicaps are significantly lower now than what they were then. If these bladed irons were all you knew and had access to you had to make them work for you.

I’m looking at getting my mizuno mp32s regripped and just looking for some advice on which grips to go for?they currently have tour velvet grips from manufacture so as I’m sure you can guess they are getting worn.

Hi, very personal choice is grips. I would personally fit a Tour Velvet. Other popular choices are Golf Pride Multi Compounds. Golf Pride MCC +4 very good. Go to your local Pro shop and have a look and feel. Make sure the grips are the correct thickness for your hand size. Regards Andrew.

Interesting that Rickie Fowler has just changed his Irons from blades to a more forgiving design. I you believe that blades will make you a better player then good for you. All golfers are different and have the choice to use what they feel will benefit their game.

@@andrewainsworth497 It seems the PGA pro Rick Fowler is a good example. He used blades until he was comfortable with his ball striking, then moved to something more specific to his swing/style. It's a very useful tactic that may require a higher level of awareness & work ethic than is common today, even in professional golfers.

i think u maby learn to strike the ball better if u start with a bladed club. the downside with a gi club could be that it is harder to feel off centre hits. but im not sure that it would be for everyone anyhow.
