That flat stone was created by a glacier, it has been ground flat by the motion of the ice sliding over it slowly. Notice the long linear scratch marks caused by other stones caught it in the ice as it travels.

I'm always amazed at how precisely you can control the machines to get an almost hand finished grade at the end. Very impressive. I've got about 40 stumps of varying sizes to pull out of some garden and orchard space I'm reclaiming from a former pasture. I think it's going to take me the better part of a couple days. :(

Sweet. Thanks for sharing the big slab rock pics, amazing place she has there. Work with nature and your setting, step back and consider what is there, then build. I have a machine rented for tomorrow and will be ripping stumps all day for a customer, just looking for a few more tips, like dropping the blade in the back or front for leverage and stability. Will be bringing some chains and digging irons and orange cones, grass seed, PennMulch, straw net and staples and landscape rakes and a small tiller, clover seed. Thanks again. Looks like that machine is doing great for you, it came in needing some love but gets the job done nicely.

Hi Andrew, you can see where the big rock was worn and polished smooth by a glacier. That was done by ice 1000’s of years ago! All of North America was covered by a glacier. It was huge and miles thick. Glaciers expand, ice expands, as it moves it carries rocks, dirt, and gravel that sand and polish the rock at the bottom of the glacier. That’s how that large stone got polished. They can be found as far south as north Georgia. Some of them are very beautiful. Now you can tell the lady how her rock came to be polished smooth! Usually the polish marks go north and south as that was the general movement of the glacier.

This is quite helpful for me. I'm developing a property and am in the market for a machine. I'm not a rich man, so something in the 15-20hp mini range is where I'm looking. I have a lot of stumps like this in my future. Telling me the elapsed time was like a prayer answered. Thank you!

Wow! That exposed bedrock is awesome. How cool that it formed a natural sidewalk. Yeah, I’ve dug out a lot of stumps by hand and it’s a lot harder than it looks. Best way is to keep shaving one side and undercutting with a Pulaski and then roll out the stump like a giant wisdom tooth.

Man, I'm so jealous of the soft ground and trees that come out in minutes. This spring I took down a 26" Digger Pine (bark beetle death) and had them leave a 6 foot trunk. Even with my 3.5 ton Cat it took me 24 HOURS. They have multiple layers of roots and a big tap root. 2000 feet up in the Sierras it's a different world.

When Yanmar invented the mini-excavator back in 1968, they had the genius to add a backfill blade to the machine. Though it seemed relatively unimportant, the addition of the blade gave the machine an added dimension and helped it take off in sales to where it is challenging the loader backhoe in popularity with the small contractor. (It is probably outselling the loader backhoe among small contractors.) This should give you an insight into the nature and depth of Japanese business thinking.
