Watching Andrews later videos, I think he learned better techniques and definitely does better with his concrete work. Property maintenance is a constantly learning environment and Andrew tries to do everything he can for his customers. You can now see him raising the mesh and framing more accurately. I do admire his amazing skill level in heavy machinery operation and he does make people's yards look much nicer all the time! The thing to remember is that in circumstances like this where an owner obviously wants to cut corners, it is best to either not take the work, or eat some of the profit and dispose of the debris yourself. I suspect the owner did not want to pay to remove the debris? But regardless dumping the debris on those trees was not good for the trees health. As far as that beautiful decorative Maple, I suspect that you probably carry a few blankets these days for instances like this. Again there is a learning curve because every job differs. But the thing to always remember is that owners who cut corners like this will be the first to tell everyone that you suggested the shortcuts once they start to experience negative repercussions from their dumb choices. They will always claim that they are the victim and that you caused the problems.

You are definitely a hard worker. I just retired from the Operating Engineers with 40 years experience. Concrete work is not your skill at all. No control joints, slab is paper thin, mesh is on ground, no expansion joint at garage floor. I could go on and on. First really cold day, that slab is going to heave as crack. Stick to excavation and grading, you seem to be decent at that. I’ve been following you’re videos and give you a lot of credit for working so hard. You look like a young clean cut kid and very ambitious. Take it from one who is now retired. Set your pace and find a good experienced laborer. If you don’t, you’ll burn yourself out, I promise you. I know you want it all, but you can still make tons of money with out killing yourself. I wish you the best of luck with your business, be safe as well.

I do admire and respect your ambition to get up and go do the things you do on your own and learning from your mishaps. Although I guess some people like corny music to go with their construction videos, I prefer the sound of the equipment running, the rocks rattling and tree branches cracking over any tune these guys plug in to their videos or time lapses. But in my defense, I was blessed with the privilege of growing up in the country being an Indian cowboy loving the noises and moods of our Mother Earth and the blessings from our Sun. I started trying to escape into the wild since I was old enough to wreck my stroller out the front porch and crawl away. I've always been irritated by music in movies trying to spice up or over-dramatize the scenes, especially in nature videos. Of all the time I been in Nature's elements growing up beneath the Rocky Mountains, I've never heard music coming from the sky polluting the air. There ain't nothing like the wind blowing across your face and ruffling your hair no matter what temperature it came in. I like hearing it on the microphone videos trying to drowned out some guy's chit chat about what he thinks he's going to do or how he's going to show us how to do it the wrong way. lol, sometimes. I always used a bull float to smooth out the high spots right after screeding the concrete pour to grade. It is heavier than your finish float and knocks the gravel on the surface down into the mud better. Next an edger tool is used to round off the edges of the slab where it meets the forms. Then after twenty minutes the finish float that you have is used to smooth out the surface to a finer finish. I hope the homeowner got the discount rate since there wasn't any wire mess or rebar used to reinforce the concrete slabs compression and fracture strength. I was never in too much of a hurry to round up even some chicken wire to throw on the subgrade.

Good job fixing up the driveway. I used to help my dad growing up in his business doing that stuff. As a recommendation, I would advise to use a motorized trowel. It's bulky and heavy, but it does save time and give a nice finish to the concrete. Biggest problem though is the price tag....

I don't even know what they are criticizing on this one. What do they want to see, more concrete and rebar? I think its sufficient, ill have to go back there this spring and film it to show them that it didn't crack. I would have had no problem doing more materials, that really wouldn't have effected the labor much. Some people think the finish is to rough maybe. The guy was standing right there while I was doing it, and said he wanted it like that. I could have made it smoother, or polished it.

I'm no construction worker, but my uncle was and he had his own company where I worked in the summer as a teenager, and we did a lot of work like this, and the same way, so I think it's okay. I also noticed that it seems like the base layer, under the blacktop, was compressed gravel so it would be very stabile to pour concrete on top of that, and although it's a bit hard to see in the video exactly how much you poured on, I would guess about 3 inc. or so, and that's more than adequate for the kind of load this will have to endure. Keep up the good work, I love your videos. Cheers.

@@jrand2631 no. He didnt tie the new slab to the old, it will heave. With the rebar flat on the ground it isnt able to do its job, it will crack (just like the asphalt). No relief joints to control the cracking and heaving. The finish... theres a process to it not just for looks. The forms... theres a reason for them beyond looks. How bout watershedding? Is it gonna drain the rain into the garage? He dont know cuz he didnt do (didnt film at any rate) the proper prep. Even if the customer wants a cheaper job, his name is on this one and in a lot of our opinions he just wanted a lot of this means money.

Andrew, just one comment on the concrete. I saw that you used a vibratory screed on a concrete job and then sort of abandoned its use. I suggest that you give it another try and then you may see that it leaves a much flatter surface and much easier surface to further finish with the float. In practice, you just lay two little pads the length of the screed with a laser and then fill between. This is called a wet screed. Lay the second screed the same way. Then pour between them and use the power screed to knock it down flat maybe 8 feet at a time. The truck driver fills in the low spots if there are any. Really, it is not much more work as it drastically cuts down working the float. The power float also buries the rocks a bit and brings more cream up to make bull floating easier.

It's been looking ok for months now. It just lost its leaves for the winter (which is a good sign, its bad when the leaves die, than stay on the tree), I have been watering it. As long as the bark isnt cut all the way around the tree still gets nutrients so its not gonna be the bark that kills it. Maybe the time of year but he didnt have any choice on that. I guess he could have made fire wood out of it and if it was to die he still can. I bet it lives.

Not ideal damaging the bark. Next one just use a blanket to protect the bark. Maples are tenacious and this tree is highly likely to survive. Great colour. The bark will look really good and knarly after 5 years too! Plenty of roots there and because it grew into the box they were confined so pretty much all of the roots were retained! Brilliant! :0)

Trees bark damaged and close to shadowing bigger trees. When u have a damage greater than a box of matches we say it's a goner. So what you can do is taking a carpet, roll it around the stem and tighten with rope then handle carefully to not damage the bark. usually you get rot from those damages and the tree bleeds out also., inviting insects and birds. If you want to plant a smaller leaf tree keep it away from bigger ones so it gets alot of sun, mots leaf trees are primaries, means they fight for the light. This tree, if shadowed by bigger ones will stretch and be thin and long, not what you want for a garden tree usually. No criticism justn trying to give some of my decades in forestry.

Many years ago when I was younger I worked for a well respected general contractor. We would always grade our pour area to be 3.5” to 4” thick. Anything less was unacceptable and anything more was wasteful. Wire mesh was pulled up during pour to mid way of slab or blocked with aggregate to stay off the ground. It would always be a stressful time for our boss on the day we would pour due to the amount of money that could be wasted if a form broke etc. It was hard work in the North Carolina summers with shovels and hard rakes in hand. The machines in this video would have saved many hours of hard labor to get our grade in spec! Although the machines make quick work of this job... I’m not sure wisdom/knowledge and hard work will ever be replaced by a machine. I go back to North Carolina and still see those concrete slabs, foundations, and buildings still standing strong. It is a really gratifying feeling to see that your sweat and blood can create things that may outlast your life and be remembered by another person. The elements of concrete slabs that I remember 1) 3.5” to 4” thick slab (take the time to grade and measure high and low spots 2) proper form work. Make sure you can screed the pour from your forms to get a proper thickness and keep a controlled shape for poured area. 3) have proper finishing tools and enough personnel to finish to the desired finish in amount of time before concrete would set Nice equipment! Maybe my father could help me upgrade some day from my shovel and rake so I could get back into this business. Looks more enjoyable with riding toys!

That slab was a too big for one man , it needs a kirb front to stop it chipping out and it must be cut into slabs and i dont think it's deep enough either . Andrew only put videos of work up your proud of mate, i guess there was no budget for this one and he was stoked with the outcome and thats great , however your future customers will be seeing this kind of work you've done and you will loose out on work, i know this job doesn't reflect the work ethics you have so maybe explain the situation at the beginning of the video in a sympathetic way as to not upset that customer .

Thats probably the trick. No employees only a lot of machines. Besides that, Andrew seems to have a lot of luck to get good machines for a good price. Like that two excavators and the trailer he got a bit ago for around 16k if i remember right.

I'm on David Odell's channel as well. He does concrete for a living and does it by the book. Great info to use for reference, but he is no A Camarata. Some people have an issue with giving the customer what THEY ASK FOR instead of doing the job their way. We all would have done this project differently so I don't come here to troll, I come to watch Andrew and Levi get through their day. Wait, where WAS Levi?

Andrew as a one man show painting company myself if I was lacking in expertise I would hire myself out with a pro company to learn first hand how to do the trade craft. We are talking about concrete flat work here. You are so expert at everything else you do I’m sure you recognize that concrete is not your master stroke. Having said that I enjoy your videos and especially the time lapse that you do. In becoming a contractor myself I hired myself on with companies making 12 and $13 an hour as an electrician, HVAC installer, Painter, carpenter, and landscape worker. I know that may be too expensive for you to pursue that course but that’s what I did.

I’m here in 2019 and I watch all of Andrew videos he is a one man operation he works harder then most people I know big props to you Andrew keep up the good work and don’t let anybody tell you different a lot of people have shot to say on how it came out but nobody was there to hear exactly what the customer wanted and also like I said that was a big pour for one guy. I was thinking the same thing. He needed to wrap a soaker hose around that tree and let it run for two weeks! I recently transplanted two Japanese maples half that size, one I put into half of a plastic 55 gal drum (with a crack in the bottom), and the other I gave to my neighbor who planted it in their yard. I watered it in really good and then left the end of a hose against the trumk with water dribbling for two weeks and it is looking so good (didn't even wilt at all). My neighbors, on the other hand, just stuck theirs in the ground and watered it once and walked away - theirs is DEAD! Hope he kept his watered.
