Listen & Play is my full-length course on playing guitar by ear. It covers all this stuff in much more depth along with a ton of practical exercises. I also go over non-diatonic chord progressions, more advanced chords, and how to do all of this without having to use bar chords. Learn more here: andrewclarkeguitar.com/p/listen-play

As far as I can see you didn't tell about chromatic examples but a lot of songs consider chords from another keys. Could you please tell in which video you speak about it or could you add some information particularly of this topic? (I apologize in advance for my English, it is not my native language)

Feels to me that years ago before youtube this music knowledge and songwriting was hidden away to a few lucky people who just had the right teacher/mentor that could explain it simply enough to start making songs - or to people who were meticulous enough to go through entire music theory and be smart enough not to get lost in it to get it themselves. Especially weird is that learning piano for many years didnt mean you understand how chords fit into scales. Even though on piano this is much simpler visually. Teacher would just teach you read and memorize complex classical songs. What a waste of potential great musicians when people can teach beginners in a condensed simple way. Thank you so much for these videos!

Andrew, it is hard for me to express how much I am grateful for these two lessons! I've been learning to play the guitar for many years and never I could find such great explanation of how to find a key of the song and corresponding chords. Of course I know minor/major chords, I know about pentatonic, I know notes... and so on. Moreover I am able to find proper notes on fingerboard by ear. But all it was rather intuition and trials & errors method. What I was missing was the connection of all things I already know - of course I have heard about circle of fifths, minor/major 3rd and so on - but never ever I have found good explanation how does it really work. I don't know music theory, I am self-learner. All explanations I have found so far were too complicated and sophisticated for me. Your lessons instead gave me the simple explanation what is all of it about. I started listening what you are saying, then took my guitar and instantly everything became clear. It is so easy that I almost can't believe I haven't figured it out! So thank you very, very much! I feel that now I will be able to better understand the music. Of course you have sub from me! Best regards, Peter!

I know many guitar players who are lost into the darkness of not knowing the language of music because I am also one of them. Just like the other language, we clearly hear it as they speak but we understand nothing. So it is not the question of not being able to hear but an issue of not understanding what we hear. This series of videos is the light on that darkness as I am now able to transcribe for the first time with a little effort and i hope this will continue to part 3 and so on. This is a treasure to us. Thanks you brother!

wonderful job! my one suggestion is that the parts where you are playing and I am listening is so helpful. I would want you to do a few of those first then the explanation then back to listening again. But I have heard this stuff countless times, and this made it make sense in a way I have never had. Please keep going. thanks.

Let me update you since my comment a couple days ago on the other video: as promissed i learned all major positions up and down the neck as well as all notes on the neck. With the latter i still have to think one or two seconds before i can point out the note(s) but im getting there and i do know my neck already. Also it didn't hurt at all ;) I already knew all the minor positions so now after this video im gobling up blues songs ;)) Hey, thanks again, you realy, realy opend a whole knew understanding of the fretboard, the keys and how to figure out songs. Many other things come together now also and i am amazed how fluid it comes in when so far it was just an incomprehendable pain not worth pursuing. First theory lessons ever that actually did something for me. Also i have no income since three years and my daily struggle with the worlds most unplayable guitar is what keeps me sane these days. So, what i said above does realy count double. It makes my life a tinsy bit more positive!

I'm so happy to find out you made a Part 2 just after I finished watching Part 1. It was the first music theory video I watched where I immediately applied what I learned after finishing it. I had a lot of fun challenging myself to play songs by ear. It helped my playing that I knew WHY the chords used were the ones specifically chosen. It helped me understand the fretboard a little bit more and see it as a playground to be explored. So thanks for these videos and I hope you know that they help guitarists like me who have been playing for a while but have been shying away from theory :D

If people got confused with this video, because they have no grasp of modes. My advice is they should stick to the first video that you posted. With that one, they will probably be able to identify the notes that fit or not on a song, regardless of the "key signature". What I mean is, if they find that the 7 notes that fit a song are from C Major (Ionian), that´s all they need to improvise over it. Regardless of the fact that the key is actually A Minor (Aeolian). Later on they can progress to this here.
