Hey guys, it was pointed out to me that in the original upload there was a small mistake in the scale diagram. I've fixed it, and this is the reupload. Thanks again for pointing it out! Let me know if you have any questions :)

Finally found someone who explains things in a way that I can understand. You're a good teacher! Thank you from an old guy that's been playing for years. Learned from tabs mostly back in the 80"s but never tried to educate myself. Thx again!

I have played this scale for sixty one years. First taught to me by my old German accordion/guitar teacher. I have made use of the scale, but never for the purpose of finding the key of a song. Thanks.

Idk how I haven't seen your channel before, but this is super helpful as someone who is completely self taught. I've always thought of the majors and minors as 2 completely different things, but yeah, they use the same shapes. And now I know how they relate. Thanks for the video!

Great lesson. I have been doing this for some time. As a beginner, it may seem tedious. Eventually, you will be able to play just the first two notes along the G string (sometimes just one note) until you get to the right scale. Edit: He mentions this later in the video.

I have a question: when I look at the fretboard with the shape at 1:52 in the E Major scale (E-F#-A-A#-C-C#-D#-E)
@andrewclarkeguitar7 ай бұрын
The shape at 1:52 is a C major scale. If you shifted that up so it started on the 9th fret, you'd have an E major scale. Those notes would be E - F# - G# - A - B - C# - D#. If you want to learn to improvise in a particular key, check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npLJoHabjbyrd6c

For the folks that want to find the relative key without having the music theory knowledge: From your starting note on the E/e string -> slide three frets upwards for the relative major, three frets downwards for the relative minor :)

This is a brilliant video! You've demystified something that I always thought was witchcraft, I can't wait to get this technique down. I must admit i was very close with the first example just by listening, I thought it was in the key of D, and i could really tell that the second example was not major, so I'm pretty happy with that much so far!! Each time you nailed down the key it was like magic 🤯

Hey Andrew, thanks for the method. This is really working for most of the songs when played along. What if we're in a group and someone suddenly sings, and how to identify the scale then? Also how to choose chords for male and female singers? (Low pitch and high pitch)

I’m certain it’s different for each person, but how long does it take for someone to learn this method? When I say beginner, I mean beginner at learning by ear.
@andrewclarkeguitar Жыл бұрын
It varies wildly from person to person as you mentioned. But for most people they can do this almost immediately if they put their mind to it. The thing that takes time is being able to do it quickly like I did at the end of the video.
@EvanEml Жыл бұрын
the part that is most difficult for me is just knowing what the chords shapes are
@andrewclarkeguitar Жыл бұрын
That's a good point. I'd suggest learning some bar chords since they can really be useful for playing in different keys without changing shapes. Here's a lesson that might be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/morWkGOIrZh2iqs
