Interesting to hear this, I’m in my 2nd year and we had a lot of these topics in first year. What made the big difference from 1st to 2nd year is the aproach, the way things were introduced/ explained. We had to rely much more on the maths courses.

Hey Andrew! Found your channel 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it, although I'm not going to study physics I love the subject and ought to learn university level physics online for fun. Are there any comprehensible course materials to learn physics online like you would in a university chronologically? Could you do a video of what you should learn online if you want to know as much as a physics major? Thank you very much for your videos and response.

At my university, we also had a class called "Structure of solid matter" in the second semester of the second year, which was pretty big and important. The more general term is "crystallography", or something like that. I don't know if it's specifically in my university, but just mentioning it fyi.

Hey andrew, really appreicate the videos they are awesome. Im in california and am transferring into a UC this fall for physics. Any chance you can do a 3rd and 4th year set of classes for physics majors? When you get a chance. Thanks again mate.

interesting, this was pretty different from my first 2 years of physics (still in my second year, but I know the topics we cover next semester)

late comment, but what i found weird was that you had mathematical methods in year 2. from where im from you get mathematical methods of physics in your first semester. So you are technically able to solve all problems you will encounter up to your bachelor degree

I'm now in 2nd grade of physics undergrad in South Korea. The curriculum in here is quite different from the US, and my eager in physics made it much more eccentric. So here's how it goes normally. Students normally don't take 'major' classes in the first year - they only take GE classes, which include Calculus 1,2, General Physics 1,2, General Physics experiment 1,2, and Linear Algebra and sometimes Statistics. Then in the first semester of the second year, students take Classical Mechanics 1, Mathematical Methods of Physics 1, Data Physics (which is essentially Computational Physics), and either of Basic Physics Experiment 1 or Electric Physics Experiment 1 (at least this is our school's curriculum) Then in second semester, students take CM2, MMP2, E&M1, and one experiment class. Quantum Mechanics comes in 3rd year. However, my eager in physics led me to enroll in E&M1 in my second semester of 'first year' (thanks Griffiths for the excellent review of math in 1st chap.), and I've just finished Classical Mechanics 1, Quantum Mechanics 1, Electrodynamics 2, Mathematical Method 1, Data Physics, and Electric Physics Experiment 1 (plus General Chemistry Experiment 1 for GE class). It's hell of a heavy load, but I'm trying to focus more on my next semester. p.s. In Korea first semester starts in March, second semester starts in September

The textbooks our school used is pretty much standard in most uni in Korea Classical Mechanics: Marion & Thornton Electrodynamics: Griffiths Quantum Mechanics: Griffiths Mathematical Methods: Boas Data Physics: a random Korean book that my professor himself took part in writting

My university is a quarter ran school and classical mechanics is 2 quarters long, e&m is 2 quarters long, quantum mechanics is 3 quarters long, though thermal physics is only one quarter long. There’s quite a few electives which I think is pretty nice about the flexibility of the quarter system. Right now I’m taking my 2nd classical mechanics course and my first quarter of quantum mechanics in my 3rd quarter 2nd year. Is this weird in comparison to semester schools?

Just and idea, dont use abreviations, E&M for example. I'm not sure if i dont know what are you refering to because im not a native speaker or maybe i should know as a physics student, but in the end i dont think it would take a lot of time to say a few more words :)

I love these videos! They are so helpful for me to see what to expect during university. As someone who is a junior in high school, currently taking AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C, what would you recommend that I focus on for my senior year? I'm currently planning on taking courses in multivariable calculus, differential equations, modern physics, computational physics, and a course in fluids, optics, and thermodynamics during my senior year, as well as a course in introductory Python and databases, as I have never had any prior programming experience. What other topics would you suggest I focus on next year, so that I can be the most prepared for my college courses? Are there any that I mentioned that I should dedicate more time to than others, or that I should wait to take until later? I know this may be a lot of questions, but I am just very curious, and in a strange situation since my school offers a lot of courses at a higher level, so I don't have very many references for these kinds of things. Thanks!
@AndrewDotsonvideos6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're ahead of the game! If you're up for differential equations and multivariable calculus, I think getting a jump on that would be super beneficial. It makes physics so much more tangible if you can picture the math at a fundamental level. Work on developing an intuition for the math, and then the rest will follow. Really cool that you're starting so early! Best of luck

How are you able to do those math classes? My school only offers up to ap stat and AP calc bc

@davidal21756 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I have one question: since you say in your videos things like: "I recommend taking this course before this other one", are all the subjects in the U.S optional? Don't you guys have certain ones that are obligatory to all students in the same year of physics? At least here in Spain, it's the other way around, most of our subjects are obligatory, and then, depending how far you are in your degree, you can start choosing more and more. Thanks for your videos!!!
@AndrewDotsonvideos6 жыл бұрын
The subjects themselves aren't optional, but sometimes when you're able to take them is. This happens more frequently with the math classes since it's taught in a different department. That's what can make it pretty confusing

Hey Andrew, I’m a senior in high school. I’m like you - the highest level of math I’ll be taking is AP Stats. I am in love with physics though - I’ve taken AP 1, and as of now I’m taking AP 2 and both AP C’s (teacher is teaching me the calc that goes with it). Any tips with taking Calc 3 the same time as these higher level physics classes? Books? Supplementary materials to help learn the math faster?

What would be the best way to go about finishing those math courses before entering 2nd year physics? Summer terms?
@dylantuttle71816 жыл бұрын
Really the only two options you have is summer courses or pushing the physics classes back a semester or two, which isn't ideal unless you absolutely have to. Also, math classes are much more likely to be taught in summer than physics classes, because they'll be taken by other majors as well. With that in mind, summer courses is probably the best way to go.

So true with the calc 3 for math methods. I took it without calc 2 cause they only said calc 1 was required. What a fuckin load of bullshit that was. Lol
