@Usul

One thing I've learned is that an "operator" is not the same thing as an "oscillator." Briefly, an "operator" contains: 1 oscillator, 1 amp, and 1 envelop generator as a whole unit. Six operators? That's six oscillators, 6 envelop generators, and 6 amps (all contained in their own "box"). Each envelop controls a specific amp for a specific oscillator. An operator usually has two or more inputs: the frequency data (pitch) and modulation/envelop data (how the envelop and pitch change over time), etc.. Operators, therefore, are more versatile FM building blocks than just oscillators alone as any given modulator or carrier can be changed over time by the envelop generator. It also helps distinguish FM synthesizers that have this capability.

Maybe this is a dumb question but what is wavetable synthesis compared to FM synthesis?
@rhythmdroid
@rhythmdroid 6 жыл бұрын
FM synthesis means modulating the pitch (frequency) of an otherwise UNCHANGING, repetative waveform upward and downward to fast that it begins to sound like a new texture. Wavetable synthesis means blending and sort of crossfading between static waveforms that are stored in RAM memory (the file is called a wavetable")--the crossfading results in a 3rd new waveform. This is totally a simplified explanation and I'm sure others will want to correct me.

FM synthesis is very versitile but also incredibly complex yet powerfull. In the 80's most DX7 users only used the factory presets and barely scratched the surface of it's capabilities. At the time it's big sellingpoint was the ability to approach realistic sounds without sampling. One of the strong points of FM synthesis have always been metallic sounds. The DX7 was hard to program but more modern implementations such as the reface DX have made it a bit easier. It was also the sound of many arcade games and the Sega Megadrive.

Yup, several early computers and game consoles used a yamaha FM chip to create sounds; that’s why we associate the FM sound with video games.

Hi Andrew. Great synth demo and great FM explanation! I loved the paper modular. Just so you know, I believe the word "Operator" refers to the combination of oscillator and envelope that modulates that oscillators volume. It got coined by Yamaha in their DX synths as a way of organizing the incredible variety of ways you could patch up an FM synth.
