Great video and tips. One thing was on you were a little off on the hardware buffer setting. Lowering the hardware buffer means the processor has to work “much harder” to keep up with the demand and has little room to buffer the processing. You can think of it like a assembly line where someone puts a widget on your table then you box it. With small buffer its one person handing one widget at a time to your table and you boxing it. If one worker lags or you lag the process is messed up. A large buffer you can have more widgets loading on one table while you box them. This is the basic function of all computers (memory, cpu slices, etc). That is why plugs kill the comp on low buffer settings. Also another tip is if you are looking for a low latency as possible, record at a higher sample rate. I record at 96 and I can run my buffer down to 32.

One thing I like to do slightly different is on the playlist duplicate. I name the track something like “Lead Vocal” then the first thing I do is duplicate the track. Pro Tools will automatically add a “.01” to the track name. This is when I start recording, making the .01 take 1 .02 is take 2 etc. Then at the end, when I’m ready to comp, I go back to the original playlist that doesn’t have a number and that becomes my comp track. Pretty close to what he says to do, just a few less steps
@josephmcginnis8073
@josephmcginnis8073 Жыл бұрын
thankyou... i dunno why you duplicate the track? just make a new playlist on each new track they become 01! then use the comp with no number genius!
@JohnnyPbitch

^ What he said. So much easier to comp stuff on the same track instead of copying each part that you want over then editing them again

Great idea with the “recording track” vs final vocal track. Even with playlists things can get crazy quickly. I usually create a playlist dedicated for final but a whole track might even be easier.

Lil tip that I don’t see anyone talking about: I figured out if you have a UAD interface, you can use the console app, turn up your vocal monitor fader to 0 so the client hears themselves in real time, mute the record track on ProTools and you don’t have to play with the buffer size.

numeric pad. Dot number enter. with Windows config is what you want. So do . 1 Enter and you get the options to save your track heights as well as recall a windows config. One thing to note. If you have set up markers and then setup marker memory locations you will have to renumber the previous markers to clear out the keypad numbers. There is a specific way it has to be done though. If you double click on the marker, and the marker property is selected, you can change the number. If you double click on the marker but the property is set for none, and you have any of the general selected and you double click on the marker and change the properties, the marker will disappear. In other words, changing the general properties on a marker will cause it to disappear. If you mess with it, you will see it for yourself. With the start of a new session, I allocate 1-9 as none and track visibility and track height selected. I put a marker at the top of the session and change the properties back to Marker and no general properties selected so all markers after don't carry things like track height when you click it.

Because the truth is Avid (Protools) is a money pit. It has this"industry standard" banner about it, but the truth is, Avid just wants your money - and it never ends. What do you get in return? Chronic compatibility issues, subscription issues, hardware connectivity issues. If that's the studio you want to offer your clients, knock yourself out.

the buffer is actually the amount of space each sample holds in ram before it is dumped to the disk, i.e. 1024mb is one gigabyte. so, the smaller the buffer the faster it dumps from the ram and the larger the buffer the more time it has to not make mistakes but also meaning the longer it takes to dump from the ram the higher the latency is. it's a measure of size in megabytes not cpu allocation

fun fact, even if you know a recommended buffer size for your interface, play with it, i have 2 laptops one i7 and one i5 and the i7 is much more powerful and twice the cores but for 24bit 192k the i7 needs an 8gb buffer while the i5 only needs 2gb or 2048mb, same ssd, same ram sticks, same software, same interface...

Ok you have no idea what you are talking about...You do a whole section on buffer size and are clueless to how modern PT works. Just leave the buffer to whatever you feel comfortable in for input monitoring and VI playing. The lowest your computer can cope with. *The buffer you choose in playback preferences is ONLY active when a track or tracks are record ARMED*. You never, ever need to change it, EVER. Because pro tools puts ALL tracks that are NOT record armed on 1024 playback buffer *anyway*. It's called a hybrid buffer.. Do not do what this guy does and drive yourself crazy changing the buffer back and forth as it will make no difference whatsoever for mixing as PT is always on a buffer of 1024 samples for mixing. I have tested this myself.. 32 or 1024 makes no difference, only when tracks are armed for recording.. and you need a low buffer for that anyway. If your cpu is full and you can't record more tracks in realtime, that's what commit or freeze is for.
