Great vid! Would love for you to react to his heavier play throughs. He does some crazy stuff! I've followed him for around 12 years now. He has a jazz background. He quickly became my drum lecturer in college's favourite Drummer! He used to just use a kick, snare and floor tom live before! Has great technique, does master classes on feel and flow and has an approach of "every beat counts." Even with Ghost notes! If you want a MasterClass in poly-rhythms and metal groove, watch the video titled this: Meinl Cymbals Matt Halpern “RAGNAROK“ - Meinl Drum Festival Video If you want a nice song with feel and Blast Beats over a major key, watch this: Meinl Cymbals Matt Halpern “THE WAY THE NEWS GOES“ - Meinl Drum Festival Video Both Meinl drum fest videos so you know they're good. 😅 If you could react to both in the same vid, that would be awesome! @rand0mturk3y3 жыл бұрын
@@cgafken That song for me captures what it means to write really good drum parts, it's super groovy but he catches all the little stabs and syncs up with the guitars, and his cymbal orchestration is almost melodic. I watch it sometimes when I need inspiration, can't get enough

I read in an interview that the emotion of this song got to Matt because he lost one of his dogs prior to recording this album. And what I read is that he was crying while recording this song which makes it so much more emotional for me to hear that. I always admired Periphery and Matt especially for his kind of musicalitiy that he brings to their songs. I still use his signature sticks to this day because they feel so nice to play. Don't know if you'll ever get to this comment Andrew, but there's a backstory to this song and I suppose why Matt Halpern and Periphery fans would request it: Basically the singer that wrote the lyrics wrote it for a heartbreak, but Matt and his dogs have a special bond, and right around the time of recording the song Matt lost one of his dogs and related the song heavily to his own loss. Even still I think there is a lot of emotions linked to playing this song for Matt. He's a killer drummer though as you clearly can see, and when the songs get more metal or technical you'll still get this "Halpern groove" in the playing - he also improvises a LOT so it's incredibly fun to see or hear the drums on two occasions and just see how Matt takes an idea and plays with it while still keeping the red line through it :-) Love your stuff, love the drummers your followers select and don't shy away from watching some Matt Halpern on your spare time, you'll love it
