Hi Andrew. I'm trying to understand how artists like yourself, Casey Baugh, David Jon Kasan et al. are able to get accurate placement of the eyes, nose and mouth and their actual length and size. I never see you, Casey Baugh or David Kassan extend their arm out holding the pencil/brush doing stick measuring to measure out the placement of the eyes, nose and mouth or measure the length of the mouth line. All I see you guys do is intuitive quick block ins with the brush determining the basic eye shadows and from there you immediately with a few strokes determine the length of the nose etc. Whereas me, on the other hand, I have to physically measure out the distance of the eye width between the eyes, the length of the eye and then measure out the distance of the bottom nose line etc. because I know that being only a few millimeters off the face looks distorted. How the hell do you guys do it without physically measuring the size of the eyes, nose and mouth and the distances between them by extending your arm out holding the pencil/brush as measuring tool ? This really bothers me and I don't understand what great artists like yourselves do in getting accuracy of the proportions. Painting on colour is the last thing that bothers me. I just don't understand how you, Casey Baugh and David Kassan do without actually measuring the distances. Thanks.

I cannot possibly comment on how Casey or David do it, because I am me. I will only speak to that. Whilst I know their work, I don't know them, and have not seen their tutorials. You would have noticed that here in this episode, I actually got it wrong. I did find a way to fix it. For me it's much more straight forward to fix something you now is wrong than to just nail it. My methodologies change all the time, and I don't have a set routine. This allows me to teach a wide variety of techniques. Here, I did the best I could in the block in, then after modelling I changed and tweaked things when I realised it was off. The trick is to identify where the painting is inaccurate. The exact method is in my bonus content available to subscribers on my website, but suffice to say I used a method that allowed for a direct comparison with my reference. This portrait was not painted from life, but in the studio, which allowed me the time to perfect it. I hope this helps. There is no direct way to approach this, find a way that works for you and perhaps you won't be as bothered. Thanks for the comment.

All I can say is your block ins are more or less painted in accurately on the first attempt which explains why you are an excellent artist whereas people like me struggle and have to resort to nitty-picky measuring. +Sandeep Soni , Producing shiny effects is all a trick in layering colours. There is no easy way to answer this. I would start by preserving your light tones. This means holding back on highlights, and allowing the brightest bright to be used at the end. If your painting becomes to washed out, too early, you can loose this tonal effect.

Pablo B yeah I was thinking he was seriously crazy a couple of times in that video and thought I will carry on watching to see if he goes batshit crazy. I was so wrong! Wow! I think the sketch was ace, the second one had the likeness but yes those corrections were needed. now I see how I can repair my paintings that just stopped cos I knew it was slightly different to what I was aiming for. I really enjoy Belgian linen. Canvas is okay too, but I prefer surfaces that have been pre-primed. This is just a convenience thing, but Claessons make one that is triple primed and ready to go with oil paint. It's pricey, but worth the investment if you are selling your work. Also, I custom stretch my work. I used to buy canvasses off the shelf, but I often found that they didn't make the sizes I wanted to use. So now I have lengths up in the studio to knock frames together and then stretch! Hope that helps. :)

I like the fact that you didn't skip or rush through your mistake. You owned it and fixed it. Some/most artists find this hard to admit and fix. Great end result👍

Brilliant! You show the 'human' side of art. Some artists show lessons in which they make it look as though things always go right for them. That's not true in real life. You did a great painting but you weren't happy with it. It was very instructive to see how you measured again, made corrections with light paint, repainted, and finally made a truly magnificent painting!
