I could give you some solid brush sets that I’ve edited in procreate. They are photoshop brushes that were given to me from industry concept artists, then re-edited for use on procreate and my personal style (tailoring to more John Harris work). You might like them for your style, they are meant to replicate oils in a controlled manner, giving a nice balance between soft and hard edges. Makes edge control and creating contrasts actually enjoyable. Lovely work!

Digital art is so satisfying in so many ways! I love doing most of my designs on the computer. Sadly, I'm only working in Krita on my PC, whereas I have Procreate on my iPad, but only the free version so far. I will be upgrading as soon as i can. You seem to approach your digital work just as I do, save for the fact that you add SO much more detail, which is something I'm going to remedy on my next couple of projects. This sketch series is really a good helpful tool for those who don't want to spend loads of money on paint and substrates to make several oil sketches before tackling the main piece. I know that back when there weren't any computers to do this kind of art, we were forced to use what we had. But I truly embrace the technology, and I will keep coming back to see what you have for us to learn from!

Really enjoyed watching that video as I am primary a digital painter. It's great to see how your traditional skills translate to this medium. Also just in case - in Procreate there's an option to enable "brush cursor" so that you (and we) can see the outline shape of the brush and its size. Just like in Photoshop. It might make it easier to navigate. Anyway, that was fun to watch the process!

Great video, thanks for sharing! I'd be interested to know (and see) how you make the translation from the digital image to a painting. As a tool for working the composition I definitely see the added value. But I'd be afraid that I'd be trying to repeat the digital process to achieve an actual paint/ brushes painting. Do you see yourself working in so many layers as in the digital? If not, how do you plan on getting that depth/ texture?

I don’t know if you have it toggled on, but under the Actions (wrench) menu, then Prefs, there is a toggle for making the brush cursor visible. It sometimes helps, but when the brush size is tiny, not so much. Also, under the Actions menu, then Canvas, there is a toggle to add a Reference image. It will be very relatively small, but you can move it around. I find it keeps me from having to glance back and forth as much between my monitor and my iPad. It’s kind of nice to have a big reference on the monitor and a small one on the iPad screen. And it’s easy to turn off when there just isn’t a good spot for it at the time.

I definitely feel your frustration at having lost a digital piece - happened to me more than once in Painter... My opinion on digital software: iPad: Procreate (there are a few watercolor as well, but I've not messed with them); PC: Rebelle, Paintstorm, and Painter. Krita gets a mention too. I've worked the most in Painter, but have used Rebelle for watercolor, and Paintstorm for a more "traditional" look.

if you have problems with knowing where your cursor lands when drawing it might be because of the ipad model youre using (doesnt have to be but i had the same problem first when i switched to my ipad after drawing digitally for years now). the regular ipads and the 1st gen ipad pros (i think?) have a non-laminated screen, so there is always a little discrepancy between your pen and your brush. it takes a little bit getting used to. the later ipad pros have a laminated screen so the pen starts drawing exactly where you touch the screen, theyre significantly more pricey though 😅

The gondola sketch delete portion reminds me of the stories of renaissance sculptors creating a figure from a large piece of marble and discovering half way in that the stone is flawed. Though the sculptors material selection cannot be 100% perfect, the deletion must be similarly frustrating. Question: is there a 'save as' feature that can retain developments of layers through each stage on the program you use Andrew and would that even be possible or economical given limited hard drive storage space and time, considering it's only a sketch? (asking for a friend)

losing that image...treat it as a sign...thats what I do (when making music and things go wrong:). I'm in the process of giving up music altogether, and technology, selling all my music gear/rare synths, and going back to art - your channel is inspiring me - i feel i'm being pulled by a tide...the reason to ditch music? because I've found that using digital media (for music) just ends up leaving me cold . I used to think I wanted to be really good at digital painting because the technology and process was much more forgiving and flexible which is true. But then I started physically painting with oil and canvas at large scales and I realized the biggest difference between the two is that afterwards with traditional painting you actually GET a physical painting (no duh) but for me this was something I really had to understand and appreciate as a younger artist. A physical painting is easily understood right away on its own. Digital painting's seems to need more of context or reasoning because it has to be viewed on a piece of technology. This one difference and that extra step of viewing a painting on a screen is all that it takes to completely change the viewing experience. With all that can be shared and the amount of information that can spread at high speeds it's funny that I find a viewing of physical painting more accessible than a digital one.
