I find the Zorn palette endlessly fascinating. In pencil form, this is called "trois crayon." It's white, sanguine, and black. Especially when used on toned paper, this has a similar effect and can produce beautiful results. Also if you use a black that leans more blue, you can get some very subtle blues and greens by mixing with white and yellow. As it is, the portrait's eye reads as blue because it's placed next to the red of the eye socket. So amazing!

I have been drawing like that for ages I didn't realise it had a name. I use grey or brown paper and use graphite pencil to sketch, then white conte and sanguine pencil, (If you have never used a conte sanguine I recommend it, it does not adhere well and needs fixative but it is a beautiful natural rust red the white is great too) and a Japanese black brush pen. I usually add blue too with derwent watercolour pencil, this is nice because you can fade and wash with a touch of water, great for distant scenery and trees.

With this style it feels a bit like sculpting. Pulling positive and negative space, then adjusting tone around the edge of the larger spaces, then continuing to make smaller changes in detail. It’s like a photograph being exposed, almost, developing over time to have all the intricacy at the end. As a dabbler I also find the big slashes less scary to start with. It’s going to be honed later so the stakes aren’t as scary!

And here's the REALLY amzing thing. I'm a digital artist, and I still find it fascinating that what I started out with seems like nothing, but by the end of it (if I'm lucky and don't foul it up!) is a good picture. And when I say good, I mean within the boundaries of my ever evolving learning about the craft I have chosen, as there is no such as a PERECT piece of artwork.

This is actually the palette of Polygnotus that was used by the Ancient Greeks and also by Byzantine iconographers . All my icons are painted with this palette and it’s amazing with colours you can create. You haven’t even touched the surface of the greens and mauves you can make!

Please revisit regardless! I've always liked art the most that shows what the artist sees, how they interpret the world around them onto paper/canvas. Impressionist smudges that become sunlight on water or a winking smile. Unexpected combinations of colour or limited palettes that somehow turn into complex skintones and shadow. I think I'm probably not the only one who'd be fascinated to see through your eyes. Art is a journey :)

This video just about made my day! I live on Zorns Udde ("Cape of Zorn"), where he was based when he painted some of his masterpieces set in the Stockholm archipelago. Naturally, his paintings hold a special place in my heart. His palette and way of capturing light - water in particular - was simply magical..! Funny, how your artistry performed half a world away can increase my gratitude for calling this beautiful place home. The wonders of art!

We know an instructor who says if you're doing it right, a painting should look like you used more colors than you actually did. We don't know if we agree 100% but as we see here, a skilled artist can get a huge apparent range from just a few colors. The great thing about human perception is that the viewer's eye and mind will fill in the missing gaps- the presence of a color evokes its complement!

I have been an amateur artist since childhood, now 82 I still enjoy experimenting with different mediums, Recently I invested in 72 Derwent Ink Pencils and 12 ink blocks. It did not take me long to realize that although I enjoy using the medium the number of pencils was becoming a big drawback. You have helped me so much because now I realize I do not need to have them all near me (I paint from an armchair) all at the same time. Following the Zorn method of painting all I will require is white, black, and 3 colors. So much easier to handle! Thankyou!

Beautiful work. I'll have to give this palette a try sometime. It's difficult for me to lean into muted palettes. I've lately been leaning towards a more high-key CMYK-inspired palette. Actually, I usually try to exclude black unless the colors I'm using together just are not capable of creating a dark enough value. I find it's pretty sly how Zorn utilized a cool-leaning black to help create his blue colors. Thanks for the demonstration.

Hullo Jess, I had a watercolor class in college and we used the Zorn palette for 6 weeks! My instructor said we needed to mix with a flat or scrubber brush as Zorn was an Oil Painter and measured the amounts of paint with a palette knife and we can use a stiff square brush the same way. This also saves your expensive rounds that might be to soft for mixing or wear them out, destroying the tips with mixing colors! Just something to consider moving forward with this limited palette. I did ok with the limited choices but it has been many years since I have found a need to use it. I much prefer to be spoiled and using convenience colors is just easier for me. I have received quite a few comments on your paintings and I hope some have gotten to your site to make purchases of their own! Thank you.

I agree with you, I'm amazed at how versatile a limited palette is. I have never tried the Zorn palette, but you've inspired me to try! Thank you 😊 your painting came out beautiful!
