Who is your favourite painter, Andrew? My favourite painter is the polymath Stephen Hough. Not a patch on your paintings! I like him and his paintings and I am eccentric though.
Will student grade oil paint as an underpainting then use artist grade oils mess up the painting in the long term ive seen acrylic underpaintings then oil is it the same? Really love your work been a great inspiration for me

I think what I like best about your videos is that you aren't just showing tips & tricks, but on a deeper level, you are demonstrating that there are objective techniques and processes behind creating great art (and it isn't necessarily formulaic).

Hey Clark, thanks so much for saying. Painting can be a pretty hefty subject, so it's important to get the steps in there! There is a lot that goes into the paintings. :)

Great teacher and great painter Andrew!! I have watched this video before but since I love egrets, and I painted one or two in acrylic, but do not look as great as yours, I can appreciate your details technique, and patient in painting. This is a skill everyone needs to learn. Patience, and dedication. You are my best teacher. I am a self taught 69 years old woman and have been painting portraits most of my life when I was able to paint. Now that I am older I feel I can dedicate the rest of my life to my passion. Thank you Andrew for your kindness and compassion. I don't see in you the interest only on gaining but mostly in teaching, and I believe the Almighty have given you the talent and will give you fortune and fame. You have a gift my dear, a God given gift!! Thank you

Thanks for demonstrating your working method from experiencing the bird in nature, photos, sketches, and then progressing through stages of painting. I sometimes like the free brushwork stage better than the full realism results but that is just my enjoyment of abstraction showing.

I learned so much just watching you paint...you're right, this was so much more than "how to paint birds," it's really about how to use reference photos. I have the habit of copying my references too exactly instead of thinking of how to use them to achieve better composition and a story. Thank you for really taking us through your whole thought process, it was really helpful and I want to incorporate similar strategies in my own paintings from now on. I want to try using a toned canvas too. It just looked marvelous peeking through little areas in the egret painting. I had never really understood the point of them before, besides making the canvas less blank and more "approachable." Those color studies were so good already...they definitely seem to help when you're doing larger works. I could go on about how you showed how to preserve tones and how useful your wedge brushes look, but I'd be here all day. Anyway, thank you for this excellent video!

@airbrushken53397 жыл бұрын
I have to say your skills and enthusiasm is excellent. I spent so many years teaching illustrators (since 1979) how to control and apply mediums using an airbrush. I worked with a couple of company's here in Australia designing pigmented based airbrush colours. I have a friend who used to do illustrations for the WWF of wild cats, that sadly, ended up being look after at reserves in Florida among other places. Many years ago he told me he used both a camera and a "movie camera" to get the images he needed to produce his pieces (many used for posters to generate income for the parks). He had a program that allowed him to edit through the movie frame by frame getting that perfect reference for the painting. Sadly I have retired some years ago and have lost that software name... If I find it I will pass it on. Excellent work by the way.

Another great video, I can't get over the amount of detail and planning that you put into your work. The fact that you use bristle brushes to get all that detail is equally amazing. I think you are a wonderful teacher and inspiration, but you are also reminding me of my older brother. He was really good, and had so much potential to become a great painter. But my father took him off art school to work instead. So life was not so good and he choose the "hard way " and has ended up with a lot of all sorts of pain and is now an alcoholic (not a heavy drunker). Love him dearly, and I get a little bit sad when I see you, you look so much alike. We don't live close by, but we have talked a couple of times about him visiting me and we paint together. I wish I can help him, to inspire him to start paint again. He still has the potential. He was born with it. Thank you anyway for being my inspiration.

Hey Andrew, I love your painting! The Great Egret was the subject of my thesis for a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology at Humboldt State University in Northern California. It allowed me to pursue a 33 year career as a wildlife biologist. Naturally I'm drawn to it! I have painted wildlife subjects, birds and mammals, world wide, mostly in acrylic, in the style of the great Robert Bateman. But never an egret, strangely, however I have painted a great blue heron, the larger cousin to this bird, in acrylic. Your video inspires me to paint an egret in oils now. Nice work!!

Currently I do not have any angle-cut brushed so - yeah. Please keep up the great work and instruction. Thanks, Dr. B
