Tater tot hotdish is a classic Midwestern treat, and I highly recommend you make it. And it’s a hotdish, NOT a casserole, there is a difference and anyone living in Minnesota can explain it, as I do here… This is comfort food nirvana. People of America, pull this recipe out at your next potluck or dinner party and I guarantee your friends will love it.

My family was poor, and I used baby sitting money to buy ingredients for tuna noodle casserole. It’s still one of my favorite dishes, and it reminds me how I helped care for my younger siblings. Make a box of Mac and cheese, toss in a can of tuna, throw in some mushroom soup and peas, top with tots, bake until tots are brown, eat hot and bubbling.

I always made this , but never added tater tots that sounds wonderful!! Just made it again 2 days ago with aldi's mac and cheese and had left over cooked chicken cut up. It was differently a bump up with cheese sauce in the pouch instead of powder cheese still no tater tots, but didn't know about adding something like that , it will be difently more hardy and filling, will have to try it. Already know I will love it. Sandy from Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin USA 🎉 ❤ 😊😊😊

Grew up in Minnesota, this being one of the first dinners I ever made. Only thing different was we always used a large can of Veg-all instead of frozen green beans. We also used a layer of shredded cheese (hand shredded) before the tots. Saving a little cheese for the top. Not too much, gotta make sure those tots get crispy! Crystal hot sauce? If it wasn’t Tabasco, it must be imported! THATS fancy😆

I loved the story of Andrew trying to impress the family by making a higher quality, fresher version of hotdish and being rebuffed by them. It reminds me of that scene in Joe Dirt when Joe drives to the security guards shack at the movie studios, and tries to say his name is Joe Dirté. "Don't try to church in up, son, it's Dirt" I also laughed out loud at the "John Quincy Adams shit" comment. This type of comfort food is magic because you can make a tasty meal from the freezer and the pantry without needing anything fresh. Pantry meals are a working people's necessity. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

My take about this being 'The Food of Minnesota' is that every region of this country has a 'The Food' that developed due to the people who settled in that region and the food that was available. I'm from NE and a clam/lobster bake is generally considered our regional food. Then you get into the different state food. This dish looks delicious and I love that it only takes 2 dishes to complete!

When I make this in Kentucky, I tell people to put on what you would put on a cheeseburger and fries. Katchup, mustard, and pickles. When people take a bite, they say it tastes like a white castle dish. Oh, the onions are a must, but I lay off all the other vegetables.

Reminds me of what we have here in Québec which is the "pâté chinois" (chinese pâté) which is not Chinese at all. It is a layered hot dish: 1- ground beef & onions, 2- corn, and 3- mashed potatoes. Ketchup is pretty much mandatory.

I’m fascinated by Tater Tots. Invented by Ore-Ida (supposedly the founders were involved) as a way to make a valuable product out of potato scraps left over from the manufacture of frozen French fries. Why sell scraps on the cheap as animal feed when they can be sold for as much as the actual fries? They took a batch to a food convention for people to try and they were an instant hit. Wikipedia has much of this. They also say that sales were slow until Ore-Ida raised the price: people perceived Tater Tots as valueless when the price reflected their origin from a by-product.

Almost every casserole I've ever cooked or eaten has been layered, not mixed together. I'm from Washington State. My mom used to make a Spanish rice casserole with layers of rice, tomato sauce, gound beed and corn kernels with strips of bacon on top that wee raw and cooked while the casserole was baking so weren't crunchy.

My tuna noodle casserole is layers of al dente flat egg noodles, a layer of tuna mixed with cream of mushroom soup and cooked peas with oregano, alternating and finishing with the tuna/peas/CoM mixture (with cracker or potato chip crumbs on top. Casseroles are layered not stirred together.
