Install Android on the Steam Deck easily! This utilizes Waydroid - a container-based approach to boot a full Android system on a regular GNU/Linux system like Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint etc etc.
Why use Waydroid? Why use my waydroid installer script?
Waydroid is a container that has direct access to the underlying hardware - no need for emulation or dual boot on sdcard!
With my easy to use steamos-waydroid-installer script, you can now run Waydroid on the Steam Deck OLED or LCD running on SteamOS! You just launch Waydroid just like a regular game / app in the SteamOS Game Mode.

@@JRDegollado that's normal behavior - the way SteamOS applies updates the Waydroid will be "gone" after a SteamOS update. Just run the install script again and it will put the files to the correct location. All games / apps / data / settings will be intact.

thank you very much for this. steam deck + steam input + waydroid = quite a good android gaming handheld. now i'm ready to play game controller-enabled android games i set up the mouse on the track pads in steam input (cursor/left click on right pad, scroll wheel on left), works great it's even a great way to get into a web browser from game mode, or any android app, not just games thanks valve + AMD for creating such a great combination of drivers and APU for android

No worries I'm glad you find it useful. Regarding GBM / MINIGBM - GBM is the default, MINIGBM uses mesa. MINIGBM should offer better performance based on what I've read. But eversince I wrote the script I use the default GBM. So its up to user to test which is better either change it to GBM or MINIGBM. I dont want to default it to MINIGBM and get caught off guard when issue arises, as the script has been using GBM for about a year now with no issues.

This is brilliant. Working flawlessly on oled deck. Is there a way of having rooted android? I can see it's a pixel 5 base...... Magisk is the easiest option, but with fastboot or download mode with odin..... Not sure if it'll work being a steamdeck!?

I tried to root it using magisk but cant figure it out. I used the casualsnek script to root it. Maybe future versions it will work or mistake on my end. Please feel free to test as i wanna get root on this thing too. The script spoofs it as a Pixel 5 so Netflix Disney etc etc will work. I didnt go with a higher model phone as Pixel 5 is the one that came with Android 11.

Haven't figured it out yet, but I think it depends on the game. For example Clash Royale when installed on actual Android device its stuck in portrait mode, so i think the game itself can't be rotated.

I didn't see it in the video, but a very cool feature of Waydroid is that you can use apps as "normal programs" so you don't have to "enter the Android environment" to use apps, but use it as you would use a native Linux app, just opening it and maybe not even realizing it is running Waydroid. Can I do this with your tool or do I need to always open the Android home and use my app from there? Do the apps work in desktop mode? (not the one from inside gaming mode. I use primarily desktop mode, not gaming mode)

waydroid needs wayland which is only available in game mode. Waydroid wont work in desktop mode as it uses the legacy x11. This might be due to the adblocker script. Go to Desktop Mode, launch Waydroid Toolbox > adblock > disable. Then go to Game Mode and update HSR. After that enable the adblock again.

UPDATE: uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked fine, which is a bit odd, but at least it's working. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Unfortunately it doesn't detect the Steam Deck as a controller for me. SteamOS 3.5.19, kernel 6.1.52-valve16-1-neptune-61. Touch works, but no buttons/joysticks. Got quite a few errors during the shortcut setup that look like "shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory"

@@10MinuteSteamDeckGamer you could test Video streaming apps. Pretty sure they have HDR functionality as a selling point of Android TV's. So apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video should all have HDR on a per media basis. Make sure the content is HDR10 and not HDR10+ or DOLBY VISION, because the steam deck OLED does not support these at all.

That's out of my control - sometimes it connects to a slow sourceforge mirror, or maybe multiple users are download at the same time. You can try this if it connects to a slow mirror - cancel the script (CTL-C) and then run the script again.

If you use the uninstall script, it uninstall waydroid and also delete the android image and android apps installed. Regarding trackpads - are you asking how to make them work in waydroid? I configure the right trackpad as mouse, and when you press the right trackpad it functions as left mouse click.

Sorry for late reply. Yes you can manually delete them. There was a minor typo in the uninstall thats why they didnt get deleted automatically. I've updated the script to fix this thanks for your bug report.

Is there any way to trick apps into having connection? I know waydroid uses your device connection but it seems a lot of games are giving me trouble and saying connection failed like lost light and codm and such or is this an entirely different issue

So this issue happened to me on asphalt 8. The game tries to download additional data but it fails because wifi is off. Workaround for me is to manually download obb data and place it in Android/obb folder. After that asphalt 8 runs OK. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXTEkqeQmb-FZ6s

If you uninstall, it will be gone including android apps / android data. Try to just run the install script again. Btw i updated the script a few mins ago. That's fine it means its a fresh install so the script will create a fresh config for waydroid. this has gapps, libndk (for arm translation layer), widevine and build.prop tweaks so streaming apps like netlifx disney+ will work.

Check what comes right after you Clone the GitHub. Something Like "Cloning into ..." Should be there. Check where it cloned the Git into. Write "cd" and what comes directly after "Cloning into". Its Case sensitive btw!

Are you referring to WinDeckOS which is a Windows disk image / dump? I dont think you can dual boot SteamOS with that. I would suggest just install regular Windows to dual boot with SteamOS.

This is an easy way to rollback - Power off steam deck. While off, hold 3dots + power Select boot from previous Once it gets to Game Mode, make sure the update channel is Stable and then perform an update.

This depends on the sourceforge mirrors - sometimes it connects to a slow mirror or maybe there are a lot of users downloading the waydroid image. Unfortunately this is out of my control. I would suggest cancel the script and run it again until it connects to a fast mirror.
