The reason why the temperatures and battery life are so much better than their lcd counterparts is because of the change from 7nm to a smaller 6nm process of transistors. 6nm is much more efficient because not only is it the same tech in a smaller package, the die/cores are also smaller, meaning they produce less heat, leading to lower temps. That, and the entire mainboard and cooling system was rehauled. Smaller transistors also mean less travel times for electrons and therefore less loss of energy (stacks up over millions of transistors), leading to longer battery life. That, plus battery increasing by 50% makes for a heck of a lot more longevity in battery. Just a couple of tidbits that explain why you were getting the results you were. Nice video! Liked that you tested performance with benchmarks yet also included a lot of user experience with it.

Did so with the OLED, and I can't get enough of it. It's a great device that offers a fantastic, console-like experience but also allows you to scratch that tinker itch whenever you feel like it. As for performance - I set mine up with Moonlight running from my main gaming PC, so when something doesn't work well on the SD, I can just stream it via Moonlight on that beautiful OLED screen (with full HDR support!). MoonDeck plugin lets me run games this way with just one click of a button, and it even works over the Internet - like my own, personal GeForce Now, only it's on better hardware, for free, and I can play every game I own, not just those supported by the service.

It looks nice but as someone that got spoiled with the aggressive pricing at 350 dollars for the LCD 64gb version back when I got it almost two years ago 550+ dollars seems a bit steep when we are talking about 5-7 extra FPS. The battery life and screen seems nice though. I would consider it if I did not have the LCD but it does not really seem like that big of an upgrade to me from the LCD considering the price increase. When we are talking that price range then yes, we will have to bring the competitors in because now we are in the same price range but worse performance. The LCD was so cheap so you kind of expected the performance to be lower.

I would change the reasons you have exposed for choosing the deck or other handheld pc, because with the deck you can play the same games as the others in 99% of the cases, so that can't be the point. The strong ponts of the deck are : - Best efficiency and performance at low tdp. - Best battery life because of point 1. - Best user console like experience, by far. - Best customer service. - Best price/performnace ratio. - Better screen. And the others: - More powerfull (but only at 20tdp or high, wich means 45mins to 1.30h of battery life). - More native compatibility with anticheat games because windows. - The VRR of the ally. So, only if you are seeking for the higher fps you can get, and din't care about battery life, and don't mind using windows in a hanheld, or you play mostly multiplayers with anticheat, then choose any of the others. In any other sceneario, choose the deck oled.

I got the original at launch, then upgraded to the OLED at its launch, and I gotta say… it was worth it. And not just for the screen, the biggest upgrade for me is the battery life. It’s obscene lol, I can get literally 12 hours out of retro games. Here’s a quick breakdown of my experience, and keep in mind that this is without tweaking: Fallout NV: 4 hours -> 6-7 hours Witcher 3: 2:45 -> 3:30-4 hours Most indies: 4-5 hours -> 6-7 hours. Sometimes 8-9 depending on the game. DS emulation: 4 hours -> 7 hours You get the idea. I now don’t even worry about battery life, I’ll play for an hour or two before bed, sleep, leave the Deck on my bedside table, then maybe pick it up the next day to play a bit, put it down, play later that night, all without charging a single time. It’s absurd. Also I didn’t include it in the list, but GBC emulation gets me up to 12. I was playing Pokemon Prism, a rom hack, and saw that it would last 12 hours. Blew my mind. Even with heavy tweaking through powertools, the lcd would cap out at like 10. Also, not to drag this out any longer, but the biggest deal for me was the extra hour or two out of AAA’s. On my lcd Deck I never really bothered with AAA’s unless I was near an outlet, and at that point it just felt like I should be playing on my desktop. It didn’t feel portable, and I knew if I booted it up it would drain my battery life, giving me way less time to play later on. But the extra hour or two gave me enough wiggle room to where I find myself actually playing these games and not being overly worried about battery life. I actually did all of the side content in Marvel’s Spider-man on my Deck while on a plane, and it was fantastic.

I love my Oled Deck. It has everything i need to check out games on steam and play on the go. If I want more performance, I just play my Xbox or PS5.

I got the OLED Steam Deck in February and it's been my favorite purchase since the original Switch. I've been playing tons of Valheim on it and it performs better than my One X. The biggest thing for me is being able to play my games online without worrying about a subscription

Egpu support, better cooling and a better battery is all I need. I think we'll get all that on the Steam Deck 2, which is why I'll just wait instead of getting the OLED one.

I was on the fence with getting the steam deck oled or LCD. I have been watching lots of videos and been watching some of your content too. I went to the plunge on Sunday and ordered myself a steam deck OLED. Not owned one before or owned a gaming PC. So I’m so looking forward to trying to steam deck out.

@@sam.alexander.reviews hi Sam and I got my steam deck on Thursday. Since I’ve opened it and downloaded Spider-Man as I’ve never played it before and always wanted it. it is amazing on the steam deck and I haven’t put it down. For not having a handheld PC before this is awesome. Just thought I’d let you know. Thanks again for your awesome videos as well as it helped.

One thing that stand out from your video review 6 month review was when you said that you don't want to lower settings to save on battery life. You want to play it on everything Max best performance best visuals and that's how I see it. I want to take out the best of the best of this device if I'm at home and I'm near a wall outlet and I just want to play on handheld mode. I just plug it in and play everything at its highest possible settings. If I'm on the going. I know I'm doing battery life. I just pop open a emulator game or a low battery draining indie game that's still fun to play and won't eat up my battery life. Great review to just earn a sub

I'd honestly prefer they had a top tier LCD w/ VRR like the Ally. Gameplay smoothness is more important than color / blacks to me personally. Ally screen is stunning too 😊 i don't miss OLED screen while using it.

I’m currently playing Horizon zero dawn the complete edition on the Steam Deck Oled and it’s plays amazing. I want to try Guardians of the Galaxy next and then maybe some Dying Light 1 and Dead Island 2. I’ve just bought one a couple months ago and I’m loving this little machine. I’m growing my steam library and get to play games I just didn’t have time for before. I waited for the 2nd gen oled 1TB model to come out and I’m glad I did.

Bought original LCD SD but sold it after 4 months as the screen was weak and battery also. I played on switch oled. After purchasing SD OLED I have no willingness to play in Nintendo anymore except for game exclusives. I really enjoy how valve fixed all the SD lCD issues with OLED version. Even fans are almost not noticeable.

Dead cells, Elden ring, Like a dragon are my most played games on steam deck. But I picked up Batman Arkham Knight and have been loving that on the deck!

I think one thing that gives the OLED its longevity is the capability to stream HDR on the screen, basically the added benefit of a PS Portal that runs HDR streaming from PS, Xbox, or PC. This reason alone disregards the machines limitation when its hardware can't run the latest game. I just finished part of FF16 and Stellar blade on the steam deck. Mind you, you will need a pretty fast wifi connection.

I've been playing a couple games off and on recently, but the game I've been sorta obsessed with the last few days has been Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Absolutely fantastic game. Plays like a dream on the Deck and just just a blast to fly jets and do crazy shit

Just finished Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth in my Steam Deck OLED, what a beautiful screen to play pixel art games with a lot of deep blacks. my personal match made in heaven is Nintendo Switch OLED with Nyxi Wizard Controller and Steam Deck OLED with Dbrand Killswitch Case, nintendo for Splatoon 3 and Super Mario Wonder smooth gameplay and simple, pure absolute fun, and SD for Hogwarts Legacy at 50 fps with some tweaks in the graphics and FSR 1, awesome experience, been playing for 90 hours.

I currently have an Xbox Series X but I'm considering getting one of these for basically one game being American Truck Simulator since it's not available on console. I'd just connect it to my Samsung 4k tv with my keyboard and mouse plus my Xbox controller and I'd be happy.

I play Doom on mine the most using GZDoom through ZDL, gyro controls on. The gyro on SD is fantastic and I use a PS5 Dualsense the same way when it's docked. I've curated my own collection of wads to include all of the add-ons from the (Unity) console versions, semi-official releases, plus a selection of the best. Currently playing Occult Secrets of the Third Reich on Mars, which is so good (It's a Wolfenstein themed wad). Classic Doom looks so good on an OLED

My favorite game on the Steamdeck is Halo:MCC, you get 90fps locked most of the time, and of course the original Halo trilogy is still one of the best gaming experiences of all time.

It does have hdr which you mentioned, which really sucks in some cases, like certain games where you can't turn off hdr and it just makes the picture look bad, like the Witcher 3

I wish they offered at least 4-6TB storage and a screen at least 11.4 - 12 inches (up from current 7.4). I'll wait for the next generation of Steam Decks.

That would also bring up the price dramatically, and make the 800p screen look really bad. Unless you also want a resolution bump, which will increase the price further and cripple the battery life.
@continental_consumer3 ай бұрын
ehhh no. 1. the console is already pretty big, increasing the screen size would make it hard to hold. 2. adding more storage would drastically increase the price. better to use an sd card or install an ssd.

I’d avoid the competition unless you don’t mind being tethered to a wall whenever you want to play, or dealing with Windows on a handheld. Apparently the next Deck will release in like 2026 or something, so if you’re genuinely debating it I’d say just go for it. Valve said they won’t make a sequel until technology advancements justify it, so we’re a ways off. But also don’t be mad at me if you decide to go for it and the Deck 2 is announced tomorrow lol.
