Hey.. Can you tell me about your journey in getting into software by learning just python and js? I'm currently studying electrical engineering.. and this is probably not going to work. I'm just gonna somehow get the degree.. and I'd like to get into softwarw once I graduate. Can you give me some tips if possible. Thanks!

Derek Banas I installed Studio immediately when it came out of Beta. However, when trying to import my several Eclipse projects into Studio, I got a pile of errors that I couldn't cope with. Maybe it's a good idea to transfer projects file by file, in a safe-slow mode. Don't know...

Roman Medvid Yes you basically have to copy over the layout and source files, but everything works its way out. Everything is built using Gradle. It is a pain at the start, but well worth it in the end.

Hi Derek! Informative videos as usual! I have 2 questions that I'm unsure of. First, I'm using java 1.7. Do I change the compiler to 1.7, 1.6 or leave it as default? Second, when I create an app, I do not get the option of choosing whether or not I wanted to create an activty. I do not even have the same interface as you at 6:00. I can choose the minimum target, but not the current target. Is it a newer version of Android Studio or maybe because you are using Mac or maybe options? I've been looking in the settings, but I have not found anything there. The window I get is the same in their webside under Creating a Project: developer.android.com/sdk/installing/create-project.html I have not tried the Github yet, so might comeback for more when I do =) Thanks

Derek have you considered making a forum on your website? This could allow us to add our own apps for others to learn off, ask each other questions based on your videos and hold general discussions regarding topics you covered. It could save you the effort of having to answer every question on each of your videos. Personally I would love to see others changes of your code on perhaps more efficient,creative or newer ways of doing things. Cheers

@derekbanas
@derekbanas 10 жыл бұрын
Callum vh I'd say App Inventor is the way to go unless you are very good at Java. The most important thing to nurture when you start out with developing apps is excitement. If it takes you a few weeks to make a useable app it is very easy to get bored. With App Inventor you should be able to make a bunch of fun apps in 2 hours. I actually teach Java Android as well, but I don't let you know until near the end of the tutorial :)

Excellent tutorial, actually I was looking for some tutorials on Android Studio on KZbin and when I about to do just that I saw that you had a video on the same. So thanks for the tutorial :) I have a little gripe about Android Studio though, it takes a lot of time to initialize after creating the project and it eats my RAM viciously, it is going up to 798Mb right now and that is something crazy.

Hey Derek. I have been following your android development tutorials and just found this one and I'm confused on where should I go. I was using android studio in the Android development tutorials in which you used Eclipse. I'm fairly new to app development but am experienced in Java. If I'm using android studio should I stop following the other one with Eclipse and start over? I'll eventually watch both but don't have time to for now. Thank you for your great tutorials!

therealpewer You could go a few routes. I have an Android for beginners tutorial that doesn't require programming knowledge : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5i6pmadrtmYaqs You could try learning Java, which is the Android language (Parts 1 - 18, minus 8 and 10) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/inO6iWxtmpZ4b8k I tell most beginners to start with either Python or Ruby because they are great first languages. I hope that helps :)

Hamilton Chevez I believe AS is still buggy with Java 7. In preferences Click Compiler and Java Compiler on the left. Then set Project byte code version to 1.7. You can also try adding this to your build.Gradle file compileOptions { sourceCompatibility JavaVersion.VERSION_1_7 targetCompatibility JavaVersion.VERSION_1_7 }
