Your videos are excellent Derek, on our masters course we used the Design patterns ones to get us through our exams! Is initialising the buttons more of a good practice thing? Obviously in the example the EditText has to be to use it though Thanks for your hard work!

Awesome, about time for the second part :) Question time, a little stupid question but why do we define buttons and textviews 2 times? First via XML, and then second time via java code? Is it like "linking" between XML and Java code?
@derekbanas10 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) There is no such thing as a stupid question. In the xml file we are creating the layout. It is good to think of the interface and the code that works with it to be completely separate from the beginning. So we create the widgets in the layout file. Then we create them in MainActivity and ask the R.java file for access to them by passing the id defined in the layout file. I'll do this many times so that it makes complete sense.

What are your thoughts on adding the onclick event to the actual button instead of writing an onclickListener in the code? The argument I've heard against it is that you are mixing the presentation layer with code. Is one way more efficient or easier to manage?

Vipul Gautam Thank you :) I have some videos on Android / PHP and web services already. I'll be making some NodeJS tutorials soon that will make it very easy to connect multiple devices. What type of device do you want to monitor?
@JangFoody10 жыл бұрын
Derek Banas It's an earthquake intensity measuring device that works on Modbus TCP. I want to make remote monitoring android app. To monitor those values currently on the device or if any quake happened before then data stored in its memory or some kind of server. I made app for that in Vb.net but now have requirement for android or maybe later on to IOS just in case. But do you have some suggestion what i will be looking at. Is the picture is clear about this project?. How to make my android app stream those values ?what things i might be using?

Vipul Gautam If you can output the data you want to a server text file or anything then you just need to read it into an Android app. I have tutorials on how to read text, xml, html, json, etc. in the tutorials on this page www.newthinktank.com/videos/make-android-apps/

Hi Derek, I notice that in this video you define onclick methods in the activity file, i.e. "android: onclick = "somemethod"" (about 21 minutes into the video) It seems like a more straight forward way of defining an onclick function / method than the more conventional way of creating an onclick listener in the java code. Are there any downsides to your approach?

It makes the IDE say that it couldn't find a resource with the name [blah]. And also, if you do that, the preview phone screen's buttons will have capital letters. To fix that, try pressing the android drop down button on the right of the translation button, and change the API level to something lower than 21 (e.g. 19 for Kitkat).

First off your tutorials are amazing I want to thank you for helping me pass my online java class with a B, my professor didn't teach us anything and I was completely lost until I found your Java series! Secondly, are you aware of a reason why in the 5.0 version of Android Studio the values-es folder doesn't appear in my hierarchy after I create it? I see it in windows explorer exactly where it should be but in the folder hierarchy in Android Studio it never shows up.
@derekbanas10 жыл бұрын
SergeantMcClain Thank you :) I'm not sure about your question. I have the latest version of AS and I don't have that issue.
@SergeantMcClain10 жыл бұрын
Derek Banas after playing around with it some I noticed a few things. First that AS can build this feature for you complete with the correct country codes (though it keeps throwing a "r" in front of it for some reason so I changed it back to ES in explorer and it looks to be fine) and instead of showing me folders it creates a file in the strings.xml folder with a "(ES)". I wonder if I need to change a setting somewhere to show the folders, but at least I know that I can manipulate the file structure externally and AS won't freak out on me. Thanks for the super quick response!

SergeantMcClain It doesn't show the extra values folders in the "Android" view, as those are all shown as one and shows the language of each strings file in brackets behind it. To see all the folders as they actually are, click in "Android" above the folder structure and chose "Project". I stay with the Android view, as I find it easier to use.

Is it okay to have many nested linear layout? will that affect the performance of the apps?
@derekbanas9 жыл бұрын
+Ian Parcon It is best to use as few as possible. That is why the grid layout is used for anything complex.

Hey Derek Banas, input type textPersonName doesn't work for me. I don't know if it's because I have a custom keyboard, but it has no effect.

Did you study code in Uni or College?
@derekbanas9 жыл бұрын
+PasteyWhiteboy I did, but I went for electrical engineering. I didn't learn much in school, but I learned a lot on the job while working for a bunch of big companies. Back then it was the responsibility of the senior programmers to help the junior programmers learn.

Derek Banas That's cool man, I enjoyed your video, keep doing what you're doing. I have another question, how would you add a ratings system to an app or website e.g. the public being able to rate new products?
