Thanks Gary, this is a useful video. I hope the bigger OEMs implement this feature in their devices. Display is one of the most important parts of a smartphone and it expected that these OEMs provide us with this feature.

I can confirm that Snapdargon 800 series have Assertive Display. The option is available on my Lumia 950 with a Snapdragon 808 SoC. However, the effect is practically quite hard to notice as the maximum brightness of the screen in Auto Mode is blinding; it is even considerably high in Manual Mode.

Hi Gary! Brilliantly crystal clear explanation! I would like to ask you something: I have just bought a Mate 10 Pro and I have noticed that most of the texts looks un sharp, like with a white ghost around the letters. This is particularly pronounced when there is black text over white background, for example in the settings menu. Most people dont seem to notice it but for me is extremely clear. Do you think I can disable some image processing to get it better? Best! Bruno

So it bumps up the gamut... Doesn't seem all that fancy, I would prefer to start seeing proper trans-reflective screens. My old palm centro phone had one of these. It allows sunlight to light up the screen the same as a backlight would.

Assertive Display is independent meaning that it can be included in a SoC regardless of the other component, or in other words because a SoC has Assertive Display it doesn't mean its other blocks like the ISP or GPU are good.

Good question.
@kevinlarsson6132
@kevinlarsson6132 7 жыл бұрын
I looked on a teardown of the P9 (it has the same sensor configuration), and it looked like the proximity sensor is directly below the visible ambient light sensor. The question is then, how did they "camouflage" the proximity sensor. Would it be possible to hide the ambient light sensor in the same way too?
@ritam_chakraborty
@ritam_chakraborty 7 жыл бұрын
Xuraiy maybe, well iPhone has no visible proximity sensor like p10. how smart watches manage to hide the light sensor. do you have any idea?
@kevinlarsson6132
@kevinlarsson6132 7 жыл бұрын
Well, Apple must be doing the same thing as Huawei. Smartwatches hide the light sensors under the display, like Apple Watch and Samsung Gear S3, so you could think that you could manage to hide the proximity sensor in the same way. But why don't more manufactures hide their sensor then, for a cleaner look?

John Dow "On the Galaxy S8 the Maximum Screen Brightness can go much higher when Automatic Brightness is turned On, so that users can’t permanently park the Manual Brightness slider to very high values, which would run down the battery quickly. When Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy S8 produces up to a very impressive 1,020 cd/m2 (nits) in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed. When the display Brightness is set Manually with the slider, it can be adjusted to reach a maximum screen Brightness of up to 610 nits" www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_S8_ShootOut_01.htm I gathered from various sites that power consumption in boosted max brightness is approx 1.5x more than in manual max brightness.
