SKIP! I own VR headsets to include AVP. This is a copy except now everyone is creating these with they own walled guardens. That said I don’t like Android. Yes I do know Meta is built on top of Android but Meta is primarily a gaming device and it does a good job at that.

And is it such a caged system like Pico, or (even more caged) 'Meta's Quests, or is it a real OS, where I can define all the UI, arrange it like I want, connect all devices and push the headset to new amazing borders as a free user and developer? And will there be much (XR-)software for it, like only 'Meta' has now? In those promo-vids I see only flat 2D stuff for it yet, but for flat 'Android'-apps, I don't need a new headset, Pico4 can handle that too.

I currently have the Meta Quest 3 and Xreal Air Pro 2 devices. I'm also invested in the Samsung ecosystem with their phone, watch, Buds and Smartthings. I'm not interested in an HMD but would upgrade to a pair of AR glasses. Let's go Samsung!

Im guessing guy never used a meta quest 3 with hand tracking navigation enabled....not flawless but much improved and doesn't require gloves or controllers ..just sufficient lighting

I think the biggest hurdle these types of devices face, is simply that they have to be :::worn:::. I have no issue with picking my phone up a hundred times a day, or looking at my watch or a monitor, but even the most comfortable set of over ear headphones isn't going to stay on my head for very long. It's also not the type of thing I'm going to strap around my head on an as needed basis. When they can project the XR view in front of me with something like a small chest mounted laser pack, I'll be fine with that. Until then, they can keep their *barely* wearables.

If, ten years ago, someone told me a Charger could be had that ran on batteries and had Fratzonic (simulated) exhaust sound, I'd have laughed. Actually, I'm laughing now, but that's just me. Good to see some standardization but I want to see AR in glasses to help replace a hand held smart phone hands free but screen visible for translations on the fly and directions plus other smart phone functions in the real world with head up and hands free. ANything else is for gaming or entertainment. Nice but not truely needed as soon as AR glasses

Meta has proven that AR glasses can be a hot item. It's also proven there is still a big enough market for VR headsets, as long as you focus on gaming and fun. It is possible for Google to pull this off. But you're right, the ever-looming Google Graveyard does make us nervous about Android XR's future.

Based on their history. - They will launch it in 2025 - Samsung will discontinue the headset by Q4 2026 - Google will shut down the project by 2027.

Idk, Google has stuck to Pixel hardware pretty well and seems to be sticking to Pixel watch, buds, I can see them doing a Pixel branded pair of AR Glasses. If it’s tied to promoting a platform like with Android I think it’s more probable.

It's worth noting, Most standalone headsets are already running Android, snd HorizonOS is also Android. Most android apps these days are made to run on a protocol called OpenXR and will more or less run on any kind if hardware that supports the protocol. There isn't *that* crazy amount of fragmentation, but if you aren't on a Meta device, even if an app runs uses OpenXR, it doesn't necessarily mean the app will actually work well with your hardware. Google is late IMO.

Battery is separate with a cable like AVP from what I've heard. It's not in the back of the headset like a Quest Pro. Also, Meta Horizon OS is open source like Android XR, so it won't be a first in this regard.

Pretty interesting! I learned about Android XR some time ago. It could become huge, but I wonder what Huawei will do during Made in China 2025, and also Xiaomi and Oppo might be developing something similar. Android XR however has a potential for being big globally with manufactures like Samsung and Sony making VR glasses (Sony is the leader I think in displays for glasses).

I think that this time it might be different. Keep in mind that this time they are going to push it is as much as possible with Gemini underneath. And that's the huge difference... Remember Google Glass? Officially announced in 2012, with rumors started in the beginning of 2000'... That's already 24 long time project... They never killed it for real. Names changed, but same idea is still there. Whatever you're gonna call it, Google Glass, Project Astra, Project Moohan, Android XR... It's all about gathering more data. And they will not stop. Data is a new oil. And all the A.I models are becoming more and more hungry for a massive amount of data...

This project has potential, but I'm concerned about the current market saturation for VR headsets. Personally, I own both Apple and Meta headsets and find myself using them infrequently. My usage of AR glasses like Even Realities and Meta Ray Bans, especially while traveling, significantly surpasses my VR usage. This leads me to believe that focusing on AR glasses might be a more promising direction for the market.

Meta Horizon is a fork of Android. Facebook and Google could agree to terms hence the renaming to Horizon OS cause Google wanted 30% of app store sales. The issue for Android XR is that Google and Samsung abandoned VR & AR for years so they are really behind. Also none of these players have any track record in gaming which had been the #1 area of sales for Quest headset. It took years for Meta and lots of acquisitions to build that Gaming immersive library of apps and dev community. Apple with Vision Pro tried to muster its IOS dev community for AVP but so far unsuccessfully - there is not enough users of AVP to matter to devs. I question that Google can do better as Android rev generally lag behind iOS. One great move is integrating a multimodal AI like Gemini as multimodal AI is undoubtedly the killer app of XR devices to come. This is where the battle will hinge on between XR devices.

I haven't watched the video yet, but my initial feeling is that I have genuinely near zero faith in Google sticking to this. EDIT: I've now finished the video, and while I'm impressed and excited by the tech, my lack of faith in Google remains. And that's before acknowledging the struggles of VR/XR mass adoption. I wish them the best of luck, I really hope this takes off, but I'll keep well away until I'm sure it's here to stay.

Don't forget, Google doesn't just give their OS away at no charge, they use the data for their primary business. It will be no different for XR devices. This is a problem as it will be über invasive at a very intimate level; even more so than phones. This (Android XR) is good news on many levels, though, as it will spur innovation. Will this Google/Samsung device be great out of the box? I'm sure it will be quite nice, but it will be just as the AVP is doing now....taking the first steps to get developers on track and mastering the hardware. Most, if not all that was shown, is able to be done on AVP, and done extremely well. Lack of games is an issue? That was not a mistake, it was on purpose. Quest is blasting along pushing the envelope on their headset tech and will do extremely well in the future...but it is not a productivity device, and that is a problem. Having maps on the Android XR was impressive - but it is not in the car so we'll have to see how the experience is laid out. A +7 on delivery and being unique enough. BTW: the 'creepy eye' thing on AVP is actually a great UX adaptation - I teach XR and IxD, so I do know a thing or two on the matter.
