I feel like the Quest must have a locked bootloader. I have one and could probably test, but it just feels like Meta absolutely wouldn't leave their hardware open :(

@@Jmcinally94the core architecture of the Quest OS is basically Android. So it won't surprise me when it is actually available to flash XR OS on it; it's just a matter of time.

Here's the deal. Google was well ahead of the curve with Google Glass, but an easy punching bag when they gave up on it/Daydream/Tango. But all that is build up to Android XR. Here we are a decade later and the Google Glass experience is now fitted into nearly-normal sized glasses. I've used the Project Astra glasses and I can tell you, the display is pretty incredibly technology. The Raxiums are tiny and projected into the lens incredibly well. Google doing for XR what it has done for other device categories. The easy joke is "how long until Google gets bored with this" but it ain't happening. This platform is here for the long haul, just like Wear and Automotive, etc.

yea! download android studio CANARY and select the android xr system image

You can develop, and test them in 3d engine like unity or unreal.

@@captainAOG ​ I took the time to look around the docs. Android Studio includes an Android XR Emulator. It looks pretty good. We can develop using the Jetpack XR SDK. They seem to be pushing material design 3. Most Android apps already work in Android XR. According to their docs. Nowhere in their docs can I find support for Unreal but I do find it for Unity specifically.

XR is an umbrella term for VR, AR and MR. VR is fully digital environments. AR is adding digital things into the real world like Pokemon GO does. MR is mixing realities, making them interactive and blend in.

Google introduces software for developers. Apple introduces hardware with no apps. The AndroidXR ecosystem will launch with great developer support with a lot of form factors and multiple platforms. VisionOS launched for one device that nearly no one uses and with a small selection of applications and a smaller usecase. Apple's Vision Pro didn't "flop" but it was way off from the hit they thought they'd get. It's a developer and tech enthusiast preview device. While AndroidXR is a platform for many devices that's in development. This is a developer focussed announcement, not a product launch.

@@farble1670 did Google ever release a true VR headset? Google Glass was a research prototype they sold. Cardboard got a lot of support but wasn't really worth it. Gave the groundwork for 3dof headsets for movie viewing. But I don't think they ever released a true 6dof VR headset themselves?
