It basically a small smudge of light, even with a decent telescope it’s a small cloud with a glowing bulge. He photo of the galaxy was done with a camera or a very expensive observatory.

I'm a real layman, I was never into this stuff til I hit my mid 30s. My brain has opened up to science and the heavens. It's like I woke up one day and started to focus on this stuff. How do astronomers know that Andromeda galaxy will collide with our Milky Way galaxy?

Anton mentions the way that we can determine the distance of other stars at 2:21. He talks about the Cepheid Variable, with further development in telescopes and tracking equipment we can more accurately estimate the distance to different stars. With recorded data, we can compare current data with previous data and determine at what speed and direction a star is travelling.

From this we can tell that the andromeda galaxy is travelling towards us.
