And then Otis joins in with the harmony...! Pure genius! How I miss those days. Life in America actually made sense back then.

I’m guessing you were a child back when this show was on so you didn’t understand what fucked up things were happening in the USA and abroad. Same with me I was born in the early 2000s and I thought everything was great I mean most of the news took place in the desert back then but I didn’t understand.

Barney Fife / Don Knotts was a really great singer, even though they downplayed his talent 👏 Imagine Gomer joining in ?

Excellent tune and excellent harmonies. Love when Andy and Barney sang these old tunes.
@dannymartinez93712 жыл бұрын
Yup. Barney could harmonize but some of the best episodes are when the plot centers on his inability to sing. Kinda contradicts itself. But that doesn't make a difference or detract from the characters. Music was a huge part of this show.

These three men brought so much joy to my life. I miss all three of them but there work lives on as a testament to their great talent and teamwork. I am 69 years old now and remember watching the Andy Griffith show since I was a kid in the early 1960s! This TV show along with Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners and the Walton's were the best three shows ever made.

Here's the lovely version of "The Vacant Chair", recorded by the great Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1960, with mandolin, guitar, bass harmonica and bass, arranged by Jack Fascinato. "Cousin Ernie" recorded 2 LPS of Civil War songs (in stunning stereo sound for Capitol Records) in honor of the Civil War centennial. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKjYc3imZph7faMsi=G2sc9fMm4TiW7lEL

Faithful Christian I heard he had a real good singing voice in real life. The character of Barney didn’t though, although it sounded OK in this scene.
@kristinamcneish45015 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that he had perfect pitch, and it drove him nuts to sing badly in the episodes that called for it...
@emilyelizabethbuchanan9985 жыл бұрын
It's a well-known statement that those who usually play "terrible singers" on TV or movies (don Knotts, Patricia Routledge, etc) have to actually be really good singers to convincingly pull it off. Someone who IS not the best singer around will actually sound "close" but not the true off-key terrible that someone who has good pitch and can modify it can do.

“The Vacant Chair’ was composed in 1861 not long after the start of the Civil War. It commemorated the death of a young Lieutenant from Massachusetts who was killed at the Battle of Balls Bluff. Over the course of the war there would be many families with vacant chairs.

Anyone know what part Otis sings? I’m guessing bass...Barney is obviously singing tenor and Andy carries the melody, but I have a hard time picking out Otis’ part.
@joeychiarolanza63102 жыл бұрын
You're correct And I love how he go's straight into his dialog coming out of the song... Hilarious. Good 3 part harmony here
@christophercanzoneri2962 Жыл бұрын
Andy is lead, Barney is tenor, and Otis is baritone. At the end, he jumps out of the harmony from the fifth of the chord. There is no bass vocal part here. Andy is covering that with his guitar.

Wonder what Otis' last show was, and why he left the show ...
