I went to a Mayberry reunion in the early 1990's and had the privilege of meeting Howard Morris at an autograph session for all the fans. I remember wanting an autograph and not having anything for him to sign so I remember going outside and getting about 7 or 8 rocks for Howard to sign as Earnest T. Bass. When I went back inside and got in line, everyone looked at me like I was stupid or something because I had these big rocks (good fist sized rocks) and everyone else had photos and autograph books. Being at the end of the line I got my fair share of leers and many stupid looks. Once he started signing my rocks, he went into talking and acting like Earnest T. He became very animated and it was awesome to see him in action right there in front of me. It must have made his day. Thought he really was going to throw one. The people in line finally caught on about the rocks and then wanted to buy them from me. How can you not have the idea for him to sign a rock or a brick. After all, he is the #1 rock thrower. I was one of the last in line before he left and everyone wanted my Earnest T. rocks.

You're right. Who in their right mind would have the world's greatest rock thrower sign a piece of paper? Now...how much for one of those rocks? 🙂

My sister, Two Aunts and several ladies at my church got the rocks and I have the last one. In a funny way the church ladies said after receiving the rocks, that my friend and I had been on a mission from God to get those autographs. One of the ladies starting crying but in a happy kind of way, when she got her rock. She was laughing and crying at the same time.

I love The Andy Griffith show! In the '80s, I went to East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, it came on at 2 pm. I scheduled my classes so I was back in my dorm room in time to watch it! I'm now married with 3 adult kids, and my husband records the show. I still love it! Ernest T. Bass is hilarious! I also love Andy, and Barney is also hilarious! I love all of the characters. What a great show! I'm so glad it comes on here in Virginia Beach!

In fact, on one episode of Andy Griffith he was directing, he made the comment "We need to move Aunt Bea over there." Frances Bavier had a conniption fit and said "Move me? We don't move me! I loved his "Mountain Wedding" episode when Barney revealed himself under the wedding vale. Earnest T. Bass' face was a classic. We had an Ernest T. Bass look-a-like at Oaklawn Park Race Course. The boots, size, face and mannerisms was a double. I sat with him once and he told me a story about him and his buddy were driving home from the races. In the middle of their 2 hour trip, they got tired of arguing and pulled over on the shoulder and got out to fist fight. Once it was over, they got back in the car to head home.

Ernest T. Bass was a comic earthquake and Howard Morris was the ideal actor for the role. If you've ever seen Sid Caesar's Ten from Your Show of Shows you know what to expect: he was a natural "NUT". as Mr. Sundstrom says he was also a died-in-the-wool romantic: whether the object of his affection was Charlene Darling, Helen Crump or "Romena" Wiley (the chronically under appreciated Jackie Joseph). A truly iconic character.

On the subject of Andy's show, there were a few mentions of using "David Stick's rowboat". David Stick wasn't a made-up name, he was a real person. He and Andy were friends on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where David Stick was a historian/writer who wrote many books about the history of the Outer Banks, one of which is called "Graveyard of the Atlantic" (I have a signed first edition copy). I also knew David Stick. I went to school with his son and he was one of the Scout leaders for the local Cub Scouts (my stepdad was also a Scout leader). I never met Andy and I don't know if David Stick really had a rowboat, although he probably did - everything about the Outer Banks is fishing, and so almost everyone had a boat of some kind.

As Barney always said he's a nut. There isn't any words to describe Ernest T. Bass. He was the director as well as the producer of the show. If he appeared in it no doubt he wanted to be part of the action. There's an episode that I liked, when he met a girl that was just as crazy as him. What's to say that someone crazy as him was capable of meeting girls. He certainly had a soft spot for the ladies. It goes to show you that girls don't like guys that are boring. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Nice video. I never thought of Phil Collins resembling Ernest T. Bass before, probably because I don't remember seeing Phil in a beat up cap and having permanent 5 o'clock shadow, but he really does! After seeing the episode where ETB tries to join the Army, I always thought that it would have been awesome to have a spin-off where he actually does join, kind of like the anti-Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Wouldn't that be a hoot?! Think of all the trouble he could get into. :-)
