Sooo agree!!! Around campfires if someone pulls out a guitar I start off with a long picking pattern to get attention and play and sing this song and everytime every woman just BAWLS their eyes out (and every guy is trying hard not to). Take that Wonderwall!!! Seriously, the JFK imagery, just a touch, so much of this song feels like lyrics painted onto canvass, just beautifully perfect.

The location of the dive bars in this video was State Line Ave. between Hammond Indiana & Calumet City Illinois, just outside the southside of Chicago. They were all demolished in the '90's. A good friend Tiny had an apartment right behind the ZIG ZAG Tavern in the 1980's. Tiny passed away from HIV in 1991.

I learned today Andy Prieboy was born in LA, but he was raised in East Chicago Indiana, which is the same area on the state line . It's a heavy industrial area with steel mills and oil refineries.

My mother did her residency as an x-ray technician at Saint Margaret's hospital in Hammond, near bar row. The bars were along state line because Indiana has cheaper taxes on liquor and cigarettes and allowed strippers to show more, but Illinois allowed liquor sales on Sunday. It was a really seedy place, and my mother had stories about the acts of idiocy she saw in just 3 months. The emergency room had a machine designed to take cue balls out of mouths. It's a sucker bet. It's easy to get the ball in, but the jaw will lock, making it impossible to get the ball past the teeth. Usually cost more for the emergency room visit then the money they won in the bet. Some of the dive bars are from East Chicago and other places that were hit hard by the closing of the steel mills in the 1980s. Hammond became a ghost town and still hasn't recovered. Prieboy has said that he also used the dying cities as inspiration, as well as his grandfathers dying of cancer in the wake of the mill closings.

"Tomorrow Wendy" was inspired by the suicide of a woman who Prieboy had known from a young age when they were both growing up in East Chicago, Indiana. Wendy later turned to prostitution and drugs, and when she was diagnosed with HIV, she decided to commit suicide by taking a heroin overdose rather than go on to die of an AIDS-related disease. Prieboy told the Los Angeles Times in 1991, "Wendy was the type that just bided her time, took drugs, and took what was offered to her. [Her suicide] was the one big [time] in her life when she took charge. Basically, the song is a conversation she's having with the mirror. These are the feelings of rage that Wendy felt." Prieboy also took inspiration from the economic state of his hometown when writing the song. He told the Los Angeles Times in 1990, "It's also about the death of a city in the Industrial Age. Places like Gary and Pittsburgh were once the backbones of America, and now it's like the Depression all over again. People have lost their homes - it's the end of a way of life. And there's lots of Wendys out there." The deaths of Prieboy's two grandfathers from cancer was part of the inspiration behind Wendy's questioning of faith in the song, "I watched them go through a long period of rage and anger and atheism, railing at the God they'd worshiped all their life. Sooner or later, they accepted it. Wendy never accepted it." Prieboy began writing "Tomorrow Wendy" while touring with his band Wall of Voodoo. He wrote a total of 27 verses for the song and then whittled them down to three. Prieboy recorded "Tomorrow Wendy" for his first solo album ...Upon My Wicked Son. He felt the song needed a woman's voice in addition to his own and contacted Napolitano, who agreed to provide vocals on the track. Napolitano recalled in 1990, "Andy called me to sing 'Tomorrow Wendy' with him, and I did it, and as I listened to it and listened to it and listened to it, I thought, 'This is really important, and the words are incredible'." What you just read was the Wikipedia article on "Tomorow, Wendy". I just wanted to add how it's important that as many people as possible listen to this gorgeous song. It's said that you truly don't die until the last time anyone speaks your name. In a way, Wendy lives forever thanks to Andy and Johnette.

My two friends and I got taken to dinner in NYC by Dr. Dream Records, along with a half dozen other fellow college radio peeps, back in 1990 at the CMJ convention. It was a chance to meet Andy, there supporting his first solo LP, and network and have a nice meal on the company's dime. Andy and I chatted for some time and discovered we had grown up in the same decaying industrial town, just that we were 15 years and 1500 miles apart. He encouraged me to follow my dreams of becoming a musician after school. My band lasted from 92 until 97 and we didn't quite make it, but we came really close and I'll always remember that night in NYC. Thank you, Andy.

Yaaaassss!!!! I’ve *always* considered that first Cars album as the beginning of the 80s, I bet I’ve said that a thousand times in my life. And reallyyy with Heartbeat City they very much anticipated a lot that became incorporated in top 40 music across the board almost (think boy bands and teenage diva pop singers backing music). The Cars were my favourite band from 78 until probably 1985, and there was some stuff competition in there (shout out to Andy Preiboy though, someone I consider a true contemporary).

The first time I heard this song was in 1989 or 90 when Andy sang it live at Bogarts in Long Beach, CA. He'd been called in at the last minute to open for Exene Cervenka. He played the piano, gave a bunch of witty comments, and sang the female parts of the song in a higher-pitched voice. I'd never heard of him before, but when he introduced himself and said he'd been in Wall of Voodoo, that got my attention. He played for nearly an hour simply winging the entire performance without a hitch.

A song not just about the death of a woman, but the death of youthful optimism. Never really understood the reference to JFK's death and moonshots until I became older. When we were young, we actually did believe that the world was open to us. I know I did, all the way through college, thinking that it would always be like this, supposedly learning important stuff, having the love of young, beautiful women. Then life intrudes and educates you, people die, bills have to be paid, love ends, if it really existed, aspirations die in a ditch. You wonder why it had to be like this and you try to piece it all together, if you can. Great story....

Prieboy signed with MCA Music Publishing as a songwriter and went to work on new material for his first solo record ...Upon My Wicked Son, which featured the song "Tomorrow Wendy," about a woman dying of AIDS. The song featured a duet with Johnette Napolitano, whose band Concrete Blonde also recorded the song and released it on their album Bloodletting the same year. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Prieboy, was just about a woman dying from aids, said it himself, might want to do some reading, left the source material for you, this song is quite literally what person goes through before death

Yes, Andy Prieboy joined Wall Of Voodoo after their original vocalist, Stan Ridgway, left the band. Prieboy wrote this song about a prostitute he knew who made a decision to take her own life (by over-dosing on heroin) rather than slowly die of AIDS, which she had contracted. When recording it, he got Johnette Napoltana to sing the female vocal part. She then sought permission to record her own version of the song with her band Concrete Blonde. Both versions are quite similar.

@@truefunksoul8638 The original time I had heard "Tomorrow Wendy", it was this video on Canada's MuchMusic in 1990. It was before I had the internet and before Discogs. I just assumed the duet version was the version by Concrete Blonde. I had no idea of who Andy Prieboy was. In all honesty, when I saw the video and heard his voice originally, I thought he was Andrew Eldritch from Sister's of Mercy...lol. Forward fast to the late 90s, when I finally did have dial-up (yikes! So slow... ha ha) and a Windows 98 computer-- info was still pretty scarce and I never owned "Bloodletting" to check the credits on who the songwriter was. It was over the last year or two that I started wondering again about this song. This time it was a millions times easier finding the info and this video. So yes, from the first time I saw this video, a number of years had passed-- 1990 is over 30 years ago. To be honest, it is only this year that I actually signed up to Discogs and I have already spent so much money on there. I love the Discogs Marketplace. I am finally able to buy those all CDs that I had wanted back in the 90s. It just floors me that most of those albums are now out of print. Thanks for the recommendation of the "Day One" video. I appreciate it. Cheers.

Then on Sunday I heard my best friend of 23 years had passed away - he was an alcoholic who couldn't help himself, despite me and friends trying to help him stop. Not really relevant to the backstory of this song, but because of the timing it will always remind me of him: Tomorrow James, you were a great guy drunk and sober(ish). Never heard of either Andy or Johnette before, but her voice is so effing beautiful I could listen to this all night and think of the good times James and I had together before the alcohol took hold of his life. I distinctly remember Prieboy berating a heckler by telling him he made more money than him, hilarious.

@@chokkan7 I can hardly remember that night (I was soooo sick) and yet I can never forget it. Took me on a musical journey for next decade or so. And still does.

I was friends with Andy back in those days!! What a wonderful, wild time! I loved when Jeff Trott was playing with him. Did you see the tour him and Johnette did with him?

The album "Bloodletting" has the Concrete Blonde studio version, the CD-Single for "Joey" has the Live recording where Johnette introduces it and talks about Andy Prieboy and says some other blather. Great song.

Finds like this justify the existence of KZbin: I knew Prieboy from Wall of Voodoo, I knew this song from CB...it was also the first song I ever got to play live on bass (as a favor for a friend who sang it in honor of someone she lost). But for KZbin (and you,YoungDot82! :D ), I never would have known Prieboy did this first (or how transcendent his version is)

This is ANDY's song...he wrote it and Concrete Blonde performed it. Andy was given the thankless task of trying to keep Wall of Voodoo together who were too busy getting fucked up. He is brilliant.

Been listening to this song, it's been my favorite song, since I was pretty young, from bloodletting, but there is a live version from her, live in Brazil, that I think really caught the emotion, howevor, it's recently been removed from KZbin, anybody have any CLUE how I might find it, again?

I went and seen CB on my birthday in Phoenix in 2011 ... I too grew up listening to them and was so disappointed. I don't know if it was the venue, or Johnette's cracking vocals ... but I hope you get to see them and it's a better experience for you! I still listen to them to this day too, regardless of the bad live experience :)
