When talking of American tennis right now, please remember to mention the women's game too. The Serena & Venus era has been an incredibly exciting & successful time for American tennis.

They're a marvellous anomaly and they're not a product of the USTA

Roddick is absolutely right. The USTA has a great crop of young kids but its going to be a struggle for the USTA to not screw them up.

@newjustfun61436 жыл бұрын
My explanation: you cant do anything against an era with federer (the GOAT), nadal, djokovic, murray, wawrinka and so on. The generation was just to strong and talented.
@gherbihicham85066 жыл бұрын
Spot on comment except that Nadal is the GOAT.
@MartinJohnZ6 жыл бұрын
newjust fun Very true, you can't top the best of the best. But there's a level just below that, players that have been firmly in the top 10 for extended periods of time, players like Berdych, Nishikori, Cilic, Ferrer, Delpo, Gasquet, Tsonga, guys like that... And also on this level there's no American players. Maybe, MAYBE John Isner falls into this category.

Serena was dominating before 2017, but it's been 5 years already, only Sofia Kenin won a GS since then and she's not been consistent. No one is dominating women's tennis but Osaka and Barty won 3 slams each in the last 3 years. I don't know if Serena will ever win another one and pass Margaret. In the men's field, the three best players of all time are European, still playing and winning, or at least two of them, Nadal and Djokovic, and the younger talents are all European. It must be sad for American tennis but that's the way it is.

When the rest of the non English speaking world was able to play tennis on a regular basis they finally caught up.
@Polarcupcheck5 жыл бұрын
The USA went backwards big time.
@hristo56893 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the US dominated the 70-90s. Tennis got worldwide attention about 40-50 years ago. It only took 2 decades for Europe to catch up and set new standards. The most embarrassing part is that only 4 slams were won by American players this century and yet no country has as many academies, development systems, number of youth training the sport as the US.
@milvao34002 жыл бұрын
@@hristo5689 Many european countries have great tennis traditions, even though tennis is often considered a sport for the rich and somewhat not taken seriously. I wouldn't say that the US dominated the 70-90s. What about Bjorn Borg? Maybe Sampras and Agassi dominated the 90s, but not as close as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic dominated in the last 20 years.

I wish I had Andy's faith but no. The ESPNization of sports, the NFL and NBA assures , especially in an age of cable-cutting, that most kids will not see tennis on TV. No thanks to the elite Tennis Channel too for contributing to elitization!

What we need is a successful doping program. Growth hormone, steroids, blood doping, epo and stimulants.
