Seeing Roddick play like this solidifies in my mind the belief that he had all the tools to win against the big 3 consistently, but he was overwhelmed by their talent and mental fortitude, to the point that it affected his game. In this final, he was hitting his forehand with such conviction and power behind it, but it feels like, as the years went on and he kept running into the wall that is the big 3, plus Murray, his confidence waned and his game suffered as a result. It's a shame.
@dimitriskazantzidis77182 жыл бұрын
@K Totci Yeah but Federer was the main problem.He did not play against Nadal and Djokovic a lot. He is 7-3 behind against Nadal and 5-4 ahead against Djokovic. He just could not beat Roger. 21-3 in H2H stinks man.

The problem was that this version of Roddick that we saw during this match disappeared once he parted ways with Brad Gilbert at the end of 2004. And the most notable change was his FH. In this match, he was able to hit his FH hard and flat and dominate points from the baseline, which complimented his big serve. And then in 2005, he changed his FH grip to try to get more spin and be more consistent. And all he did was make his FH more spinny and it didn't have the same penetration and didn't hurt anyone from the back of the court. In essence, he went from being a big-serving aggressive baseliner to being a pusher with a big serve. From 2005 onward, a lot of his matches would generally follow the same pattern. He's might have 30 winners, but only 6 of those would be off the ground as the other 24 would be aces. And guys like Hewitt, Nalbandian, Davydenko could dominate baseline points against him. And it actually became easier for Federer to beat him because he no longer had to worry about Andy's power from the back of the court. The difference is quite apparent when you look at their 2004 & 2005 Wimbledon finals.
@gregoryphillips39692 жыл бұрын
Whoever was coaching him in the time after he won the open started messing with his forehand. After 2006 he started doing the windshield wiper click flick across his chest without extending the arm out before following through. This really cost him. Even Jack Kramer told Roddick before he passed away that he should have won more majors. And Kramer knew as much as anyone about tennis from all sides.
@kevinreilly79245 ай бұрын
His forehand was at its best 2003-2004, flatter but not without top spin, deeper and super fast. 2005 was when he decided to muck it up imo

I remember this US Open. There were many rain delays that year. Roddick was not affected and had day off between matches. Ferreo, however, had to play 3 conservative days including the final. In the final, Ferreo was exhausted while Roddick was well rested. People were talking about that, but decades later, no one knows any more. I thought there should be a footnote about Roddick's win.

I always wonder what would have happen if he kept Brad Gilbert as his coach, in the 18 months they worked together Roddick played some of his best tennis even agasint Fed
@pomerlain89242 жыл бұрын
Roddick has more majors, and has a more respectable H2H against Fed. Once he dumped Gilbert and let Dean Goldfine change his FH, the match-up became that much more easier for Fed. Just get the serve back to get the point to neutral, and then dictate the rallies from the baseline, as he no longer needed to worry about Andy's power pushing him back.

@kal Ke roddick has been incredibly respectful towards Djokovic as a player. He has even said during an interview that when Djokovic found his form and started beating roddick regularly that roddick realized he could no longer compete for the top. Because it was first just fed he couldn't handle. And then it was Nadal. And now this Djokovic guy is coming up and playing tennis at a level no one had ever seen before. And that is why roddick retired. Roddick literally said in an interview that Djokovic's level of tennis is the reason why he retired. It doesn't get more respectful than that. Roddick is a guy who likes to joke around a lot. But he is a respectful guy where it counts.

With all respect, Andy probably lost the semis to David Nalbandian over a possible horrific bad line call (matchpoint Nalbandian) which looked in for David, but called out. Then in the finals, JCF was exhausted playing long hard matches consecutively going into the final while Andy was well rested. Ofcourse it would ebd up being the only slam he'd win. Roger took him out in every slam encounter.
