Jan Akkerman (guitar) never played Hocus Pocus the same way twice. Every time they did this, it was different, and the recordings they released were different too, album version, single edit, rerecording, etc. I much prefer the studio version from their album "Focus II", but I'm sure that's just because it's the one I've been listening to for over 50 years.

This was (& likely still is) the ultimate "How-to-Piss-Off-Your-Older-Sister" Song of All Time.

The greatest Dutch prog rock band ever shows they have a helluva sense of humor. I remember first hearing this (the original studio version) in the early 70's, it blew everyone's minds. I recommend you check this version out from their brilliant 1971 album "Moving Waves" as well as "Focus 2" these guys are great musicians. The amazing and hugely underrated Jan Akkerman was a real innovator and one of the most influential guitarists of the day and had his own unique style fusing rock with prog, jazz and acoustic styles. Jan and phenomenal keyboardist and occasional lead singer Thjis Van Leer wrote most of their extraordinary material, the band is still going with a young line-up and Thjis still at the helm at 73! Cheers

I was 19 when I heard Hocus Pocus for the first time in 73 and me and my mates reaction was just like yours! The early 70s music scene was awesome! Led Zep, Focus, Free, The Who, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Pavlov's Dog, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Neil Young, Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Ten Years After, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Hollies, Chicago, Hendrix, CSN, King Crimson, Cream, Hawkwind, Todd Rundgren, Traffic, Uriah Heep, Peter Frampton, Caravan, etc. Only stopping cos my typing fingers hurt. Keep up the good work, guys.

First and only Midnight Special Full Crowd standing ovation in its 9 year run. You have to remember there was no MTV, no internet, Midnight Special was the only way you could see a band live unless they came to your town. It was on from 1230am Saturday Morning until 2am East Coast Time, and everything stopped. University Party's everyone sat by the TV and watched. The youth of America and Canada just stopped everything and watched the show. It was glorious. Usually the audience was so high by the time of the show, they just sat there and grooved.

Now that you have seen Gladys Knight introduce this you have to listen to Midnight Train To Georgia. It's a moral imperative!!!
