Guys, THIS was the THE SONG that launched Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks in to the aural stratosphere. This song was where her Welsh Witch persona derived: Unbeknownst to Stevie, at the time, when she wrote the song in late 1974, the song perfectly depicted the Goddess of Birds and Horses, Rhiannon (from Welsh Mythology). It was kind of a poetic premonition by Stevie, and she's never been the same since. Since 1978, she's had an entire album/soundtrack of songs written for an animated film called, The Song of Rhiannon, that's still in the works. I believe this single went to #14 on the charts, and stayed there for like 6 or 7 weeks, much to Mick Fleetwood's delight...it became one of the biggest reasons new and old fans of the band came to see them live in 1976 and onward. You guys should watch Fleetwood Mac's 1997 (The Dance) live performance next, to get the visual effect.

Rodzilla Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks would go on to make more albums and go on tour, many of their songs to be played on the radio. In a lucid dream by Stevie she saw that if they sold albums prior to going on tour fans would know the songs when they were performed. Stevie sang some songs, others she didn’t. After having an erotic dream one night Stevie was inspired to write “Tusk”. All the songs on the Fleetwood Mac albums are performed by Fleetwood Mac.

I realize you don't want to do a reaction to the same song twice but I would love to see how you two react to their live Midnight Special performance of this song from 1976. They were really starting to hit the peak of their performance era at that time and she really digs into that performance. Seeing you watch them play would be great: Mick's drumming, Christie on keyboards, John McVie on bass, and Lindsey Buckingham's ripping guitar solo, to say nothing about Stevie's vocals. S-tier all the way. If you want to do a second song compare that performance to the acoustic Landslide from The Dance in 1997. Older and more mature but just as good.
@legionofbarry4 жыл бұрын
Classic tune for sure with exceptional musicianship. Fleetwood Mac was a late '70's monster. Incredible personal (4 of the band's five members were couples) and musical chemistry. One of the most "different" songs by Fleetwood Mac was Tusk (album's name also). At one point they have the USC marching band in the song. Glad you mentioned Lindsay Buckingham, because I think he's one of the most insanely underrated guitarists of the classic rock era.

Didn’t even mention that genius melodic bass line that propels and structures the song. Give some props to John McVie!

I saw them in concert in Denver right after Buckingham and Nicks joined, and this was her first solo song. She introduced it by saying, "This is a song about a Welsh witch" and then she had her beautiful dress and scarves and those moves. Beautiful.

You need to do early Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac - "Oh Well" put them on the map back in the 60s.

This was from my generation and find it hilarious that there are people who have never experienced this music.

She's on the front of the Album so you cn see what we were drooling over... Really great breakdown of the song and as you say, it's adult. Subtle would be another word I would use for it.. Love it.. Keep on Rocking.

There are definitely a handful of songs that define the 70's and this was one of them.

Their “Mystery to me” album was a great album, pre Stevie Nicks. They had many before her. Keep it Going was a great song. Emerald Eyes also was memorable more mellow, Keep it Going more dynamic.

Check out Rhiannon Fleetwood Mac Live 1976 from the tv show The Midnight Special. The live version has a harder edge, stronger baseline, that guitar solo you were expecting here and Stevie Nicks going off. Shows that Stevie was more than the soft edge you hear with songs like Sara, Landslide, Dreams, and and studio version of Rhiannon. She could rock out with the best when she cut loose

We'll be waiting for the Midnight Special version...

Great reaction, guys! Loved it and love that you're circling back to FM. I would love to see some more female performers on here. There's a mood and feel to women-centric music of the 60s and 70s you don't get anywhere else. You did Heart's Barracuda on Drunk Reaction and weren't impressed. Give them another go with Magic Man. The sensuousness of the lyrics and instrumentation will affect you like no other. Amazing song from a young woman's perspective. Others in the comments have mentioned Linda Ronstadt. Yes! Her voice is sublime and her songs are the best in Southern Rock with elements of grass roots oldies. Favorites include When Will I Be Loved, You're No Good, Blue Bayou, and Long Time. I also saw The Pretenders further down the list. They are a must for lead singer Chrissie Hynde, the group's instrumentality, and lyrics. Try Middle of the Road for a great banger! There's also the rock goddess of the late 1960s - Janis Joplin. For the ultimate in blues rock, not much beats Piece of My Heart. It's raw, banging, and just awesome! For a bit more mellow grooving Janis, try Me and Bobbie McGee. The lyrics put you right beside her and Bobbie and the music drives you home. I've always loved Because the Night by Patti Smith. It's seductive and timeless. And for the best in storytelling lyrics, Carly Simon tells it exactly as it is in You're So Vain. These are just a few suggestions, let's see what the rest of the community thinks.

You two are awesome, so mature and appreciative of many genres. By the way, this song is named after a Welsh witch called Rhiannon. Keep up the reactions.

You need to see the 1976 live Midnight Special version of this song. Stevie goes all out in this one, especially at the end. Great version.

Like all the 70’s teenage boys, yeah Stevie (the Welch Witch with her lace outfits) was the dream. But the Fleetwood Mac song you should check of is one by Christie. It’s the song that closed their shows with just her on the piano (sometimes Lindsay would accompany her, but best with her alone). That’s “Songbird”. It send a chill down my spine just typing the name here. It is truly one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. And Christie is perfect for it.

The siren song analogy is sooo on target - Stevie Nicks has the evil seductress vibe that could make you do bad things. I remember when the Rumors album came out a few years later during my senior year in high school - everyone was wearing it out at the beach during graduation - you could not go to a room anywhere where it wasn't playing on an 8-track or portable 'record player'. Fleetwood Mac had us all spellbound at the time. None of us knew that the band was at a point where they could have killed each other if it were not illegal - but the resulting tracks show the tension and add to the depth of the music. Good review.

Have to make note, the 60s and 70s artist are who they are cause of their drive. If someone like Stevie or Boz Scaggs were on the American Idol as if they started out in their careers today, they might have made the audition round by today's standards, but someone like me who grew up on all these artists that you are now experiencing, it was totally cool to hear new and unique ways of singing and playing that makes them legends in their own right. I am so happy I didn't know music thru American Idol

Awww yeah you're feeling Stevie's vibe which is beyond magical. Great ear Alex, this song was written by Stevie, she says it's about an old Welsh witch. If you're feeling beyond "lost in the sauce" then you totally get the emotions Stevie put out there. Fleetwood Mac has been very successful at being so free with their artistic skills . Goosebumps, chills all the good stuff is what you're going to feel. The saying "Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe" is so true. Stevie is beautiful inside and out, a gypsy soul and as free spirited as you can imagine. She was at times thought to be a witch, but a good witch indeed.

So here's the thing...the 70's gave us EVERYTHING. You guys are evaluating individual songs from the album "Rumors" and that's cool...you're doing a great job. But for those of us that lived back then, the whole album was a "you can't go wrong" proposition. And while you are listening to Fleetwood Mac, you want something different...put on a Lynyrd Skynyrd album and THAT whole album is dope. Then go to the Doobies, then Bob Seger or Aerosmith...not just one or two songs, entire albums. Back then...we didn't have I pod or I this or that or phones....we had ALBUMS. So much talent, and it is great to see you guys appreciate it as much as you do.
