Greetings Gabe! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! This monitor is definitely a blessing with the feature, quality, and deployability, at this price range is a wonderful option for people that don't require the extra umph of the Atomos Ninja. I hope one of these days the cheaper monitor companies allows us to load LUTS, not for Log profiles, but for some of us that just color grade the cameras built in color profiles! Would love to see my specific grades on set so that I can make lighting adjustments and spend less time in post if something is off between scenes! Thanks again for stopping by in the comments! I'll see you in the next one every Wednesday! What kind of films do you enjoy filming?

My current budget classes monitor that I use and love is the Fotga A50 Monitor. My review of that one is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWa7ZKOXftqDidk Essentially get which ever is cheaper unless you have need for HDMI output and Dual NPF battery for more use time. I just picked up one of these to use on my Fuji X-H1 and am very pleased. As the x-h1 doesn't have a "flippy screen" it is hard to frame yourself. That's fixed now. It just makes it a joy to use. Only one real "arghgh!" issue; even when you turn it off the battery still powers the little light. So you have to remove the battery or it will run down. Grrr! Otherwise, same issues as you; the pivot knob loosens but you get in the habit of giving it a little tighten every time you adjust the monitor. No big deal. The shoe mount is the tiniest bit wobbly left to right. Not horrible, just a little annoying. I think the shoe mount just needs to be 1mm wider or so to eliminate it. I LOVE being able to flip it back to front. That makes shooting by yourself so much easier. Unfortunately, if you export the hdmi camera data to the monitor, it reverses itself when you flip it over so you have to be able to read backwards! Oh well, I just turn it off. I really only need to see the volume and histogram when shooting myself. Overall, very happy. Is the SmallHD a better monitor? Maybe, but I can't see it being $300 better. At least on my retired budget :-) Thanks for the review, well done. I really like the TL:DR format. In the naval intel world we call that a BLUF or, Bottom Line Up Front. Many thanks!

Greetings Henry! Thank you so much for checking out this video (and others that I will get to replying) and commenting! This monitor is definitely quite useful and has continued to serve me well for me needs. I'm not sure if they've changed anything in the firmware of the monitor but if you keep cycling through the flip function it will also flip the image horizontally so that the camera data will be in the correct orientation when you have the monitor flipped towards the lens. Retired budget or not, we always gonna be conscious in our investments ;) I'm glad you enjoy the TLDR / BLUF format! Great video! I picked up my Andycine A6 about a month or so ago and I have found it to be an immense help. Though I think that L bracket is kinda junk as I kept finding myself tightening it back up and there was some wobble at the cold shoe mount of it. I ended up replacing it with a small ball head and have been very happy with the monitor.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Todd! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! This monitor has definitely helped, before I was using my Lilliput A7s on a ballhead, with the large NPF battery and it was just too clunky to run and gun effectively. I feel this 5.7" is the perfect size for the GH5 and has been wonderful running and gunning with it. My hotshoe seems to hold nice and tight without wobble, if you did go back to it you could place some clear tape on the bottom of the hot shoe part so that it snugs up to the cameras mount. My screw does get loose too if I decide to move the screen without untightening as well. For me it doesnt happen often as I generally have to film with the camera lower than my head, so the monitor constantly is left facing upwards. (Damn being tall lol) Other than that, a very nice monitor that does more than I could ever ask for at this price range! Thank you so much again for stopping by! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

Does the focus peaking on your gh5 also show up on the monitor? And if you have a lut on V-LOG, does this show up on the A6, or do you just see the log image?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey TJay! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The focus peaking will only show, if I remember correctly, if you tell the HDMI to display all info. However the focus peaking is very very "fine" when going through HDMI so you won't really be able to see it. Best to just use the Monitors own Focus peaking (however annoying as it will focus on HDMI info if you have that going through). As for the V-LOG lut assist, there is an option to turn that on in the GH5. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker The A6 Plus is out of my budget, but the Fotga A50T seems like a nice purchase, especially for pinching in to check focus. Dual battery slots is also nice since i want to go with low profile batteries. If i do go with the Fotga, i'm not sure where i can slot a videomic since it doesn't offer another hotshoe mount. I'd prefer to stay away from a camera cage setup that offers more hotshoe mounts, as i intend to keep my setup portable and instant. Also, how is monitor lag on the Fotga A50T? To my understanding, the GH5 usually suffers from monitor lag when recording at 24fps, but i noticed you using the gimbal and following focus just fine. And i take it the monitor doesn't get concerningly hot either? Sorry for asking so many questions XD
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Haha no worries about the questions! The Lag isn't bad as its handicapped by the GH5's HDMI port first and foremost. So any lag that monitor does bring is very minimal compared to the lag coming out of the GH5. For that skit I shot in 30p to stay consistent with the youtube talking head portion. But I will say having shot 3 feature films with the GH5 HDMI out lag at 24p. While it is annoying to know its there, you sort of don't really feel it when you're actually filming, your body and eyes adjust to process both the actor moving and only really use the monitor to spot check focus and framing during movement. As for if it gets hot, not in my experience to where I am concerned for the monitor. Pretty sure all budget monitor these days do just fine when it comes to heat.

Hello, thanks for your review. Can you tell me how is possible to aliment the 7,2V dc input of a camera with a 8v DC output from the monitor without issues, burning camera composents ? Does the Dummy battery fix the difference of voltage ? Maybe it is a stupid question but I made researchs and I can't find the answer... please telle me.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Fabvre! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The dummy battery doesn't regulate the voltage rather the monitor already does it internally. 8v is safe for the camera to operate from. The 7.2v that you usually see on batteries is just its average operating voltage (I think), when you fully charge a battery the voltage is actually higher than 7.2v. Hope this helps! Nice Review, thank you! But how can this be sharper than other 2k-monitos? It´s still digital and same pixel count. Baybe you dialed it brighter? Actually on a bigger monitor with same resolution focus pulling should be easier. Are the colors in the highlights washed out only on this monitor, or is it the same with Lilliput A7s and others? The 4 function buttons are in fact great bonus.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Markus! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I know it sounds crazy that to my eyes this monitor was sharper than my lilliput 7" as well as the other ones I used alongside of it. The best way I can describe what I saw from the other monitors was the pixels almost look like its fuzzy around the actually pixel (Pixel glow or bleeding?) Where as with the A6 monitor, I did not feel like I was seeing any fuzziness, it was crystal clear and sharp. Perhaps I got a lower quality panel from the batch in my Lilliput since these monitors are quite cheap, I can't imagine they are top line produced parts. As for the highlights washing out, my liliput a7s seems to hold a little more detail in the IRE 90 area, but not by much, id say the performance is approximately the same. I'm not sure about the MA5 as that belonged to a colleague of mine, we were on the same shoot together. The four function buttons is amazing to have, I hope more monitors will go this route as Focus peaking and false color are not the only functions we'd like to use quickly on the field! No I am praying for Andycine, Feelworld, etc to give us a monitor that allows us to load our own LUTs. While I don't film in log, I do sometimes grade the color profile I work in (Mainly NATURAL, used to be CINE-D). It would be nice to see my typical color looks out in the field when filming the independent movies I work on, would save a lot of time in post production so that we get the light levels right for the graded look right away! Thanks again for stopping by in the comments! Hope to see you again in the next one every Wednesdays!

TLDR Filmmaker I have an Sony A77 that I've used for years and will be purchasing the A7iii in the future but would like a Atomos Ninja V to be a recorder. My A77 outputs through HDMI a 1080p 60fps signal that I should be able to add LUTS to with the Ninja V. What do you think? By the way, I have Marshall monitor is starting to act up and so before that happens should I invest in the Ninja V?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Greetings Donald! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I feel the answers could change depending on your shooting style and workflow. My personal gear investing habits all come down to two things, complete budget of the gear + how much time does it take or save me. So in your current scenario, this is how my brain see's the option 1) When utilizing a recorder on set, you inherently will need to spend more money as you need to ensure you will always have enough SSD's on hand as well as extra batteries as these things will be more power hungry than a regular field monitor. Afterwards you most likely will need to purchase more storage/editing hard drive to fit all the high quality prores files (or RAW for some cameras) 2) The recorder will save you time in post as you no longer need to transcode your files into Prores...but the question becomes, does your footage necessarily need to be prores? For me, anything other than a feature film or documentary may not need to be shot in prores. My channel does not require that fidelity as its more informational and most likely being viewed on a tablet or cellphone, so the amount of money I spend to shoot in prores becomes a lose. 3) Atomos used as a field monitor only is hands down an amazing tool, especially with the ability to load LUTS so that you can see your grade before going into post. That in itself is a great time saver on set, especially for feature films. 4) This one is a bit more philosophical, "If you can't immediately say "I need this", then chances are you don't need it right now." This is a big one to me as it always immediately tells me if a gear is worth investing in right away. The GH5 was the first piece of gear that I pre-ordered right away, coming from the GH4. When they told us IBIS + Waveform was inside the camera, I knew immediately the GH5 was something I needed and worth the investment because of how my footage would look in certain situations with the GH4. 5) Last, but not least, is looking towards the future. These uncompressed codecs will always always technically outperform a compressed codec....but technology and development isn't going to make that statement true forever. Internal compressed codecs continue to improve with each generation of cameras and I believe the next camera war is going to be determined not by low-light, but by internal codec. We as creatives know low-light only can go so far in terms of getting a great story telling image, but its not worth anything if we can't process it or manipulate it the way they want. After all the cameras finally reach a clean triple native ISO 256000, their next aim is for the most efficient internal codec that rivals uncompressed codecs and pave the way for why their camera is the only camera you should ever consider. Sorry this is such a long reply and most likely does not fully answer your question. But the main answer is, are you prepared to spend extra cash on top of the Ninja V just to be able to record and store your prores footage. If the answer is "yes" no problem, then its probably one of then I would say it's definitely a great bang for the buck (currently). If loading your own luts is all you're looking for, there are some field monitors that are not recorders out there that allow you load your own luts into the monitor. I'm sincerely hoping companies like Andycine and Feelworld will be incorporating that feature soon as its been long overdue. Hope this helps! Thank you so much for stopping by in the comments! Check back every Wednesdays for something new!

Hi, is there latency (monitor lag) issues with the GH5? I currently use the Lilliput and there is terrible latency. I appreciate your honest feedback about this monitor, Thanks!
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Tony! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Unfortunately the latency that we see from the GH5 is actually on the GH5 itself, especially if you are filming in 24hz or 24fps, latency is better when you are filming in 30p or 60p. I have no idea why this is for the GH5, but it seems to struggle sending out a fast signal when filming in 24 :(. As for the monitors internal latency, I haven't performed a traditional test in this regard because even if the monitor is fast, the camera still becomes the bottleneck. I hope Panasonic figures this out when they eventually develop the GH6. I haven't heard of its better in the S1 cameras, but allegedly the latency from the HDMI port is about the same, possibly a limitation of the HDMI protocol. Hope this helps! Hey DL! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I can't remember if the Andycine had a speaker built in like my Lilliput A7s, I don't think it does but for the sake of eliminating the chance, go into the Menu system of the Andycine and turn the headphone jacks volume all the way down. However what it sounds like to me is that one of the capacitors inside the Andycine may be damaged slightly. Which makes sense because you don't hear the electric current inside as much when you have a full battery versus a slightly depleted battery. Some capacitors will squeal and whine at lower voltages/currents but won't when it gets the full voltage and current it's rated for. My TV does this when you first power on the TV, but after it fully powers on, you don't hear the squeal and whine. Long story short, I think you should contact either the Vendor or Andycine and let them know your problem that you could have a bad capacitor or something on the board that's not working correctly when electricity passes through it. Hopefully they can assist you and get you a replacement ASAP, as my Andycine A6 does not experience this problem when hooked up to my NPF batteries. Hope this helps!

Greetings Bennett Stoops! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I wonder if the Lock-On AF is part of it too. Hope someone here in the community can shed some light and see if they can replicate your problem. I would also send some feedback to Panasonic and let them know that when you attach the monitor that your Lock-On AF doesn't work. Sorry I don't have a solid answer for you, but hopefully a solution will come soon! Thank you so much for stopping by, hope to see you in the next one!

Is this monitor great for a talking head video?

Hey hey again Joon! This dependent on what you're comfortable looking at. For me a 5" monitor is fine as I just need a reference, but some people like 7" monitor. You can even use a TV if you'd like, just depends on your preferences. Otherwise yes this monitor is just a monitor and for a talking head it'll give you reference and rough color/exposure references.

Hey hey Dang! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! You're absolutely right, I actually got to meet the people in charge this year at NAB and now I know how Andycine and Feelworld's work relationship is! Love their monitors, especially the upcoming F6+ that I saw at NAB, that ones gonna be amazing to use! Thank you so much again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one!

Hey hey Neon! It's been awhile! I don't disagree, as a 7" monitor is definitely nice to have, however I think it depends on what your setup is. For me when I had my Liliput A7s attached to my GH5 in a run and gun situation, it was a nightmare to operate with the hotshoe ballhead with the largest NPF Battery. I feel this A6 is the best run and gun setup because of size, operational design, and of course powering the camera. That being said, I wouldn't use these for a portable video village, id probably go towards the 7" monitors for sure! Thanks again for checking in and commenting! How's everything going out there in Cali, man?

@@TLDR_filmmaker for sure bro for my run n gun i had longer neck on the shoe mount which allowed me to actually hold the whole thing with my left hand, so my left hand was in between the cam and the monitor andbi loved that setup
