Great stuff here! An important distinction regarding the whammy (vibrato) was Kevin Shields only used it to bend up to intended pitch (there was a fender interview where he describes this}- not warble back and forth which was the psychedelic sound Andy is referring to. Some great playing and convo in this. Keep up the excellent content!

I seem to remember Kevin Shields saying his fingers weren't strong enough to play unison bends, so he's actually playing the same note on 2 stings tuned the same, and as he's constantly moving the vibrato arm, you get the drift in pitch.

Andy helped me massively when I got back into guitar maybe a decade ago. And Adrian is hands down the coolest teacher , best taste in music anywhere: so for the 2 coming together to tackle MBV, extraordinary. I’ve been scared off MBV,recreating/ being able to play along almost impossible and could never get the band to play it. loveless the greatest ‘sound’ album of all time, I was 18 at the time and got into music with these bands, RIDE with ‘Nowhere’ but before that the raw excitement of those opening bars of Chelsea girl… all that time, Reading 1990, Slough festival in 91, these bands were beautiful in every way. And still producing now as Adrian says. Anyway, rare to comment, but this provoked it. BTW, also nice to see Adrian relaxed. Well done!!!

'shoegaze' was fundamentally English bands being influence by Sonic Youth, Birthday Party and 80s New York noise bands like Live Skull, and of course the Velvet and Paisley Underground. Their stance was more avante-garde/experimental than every other English band influenced by the Beatles and the Smiths. That Add9 trick was a J Mascis special, re 'yr living all over me' album

Great video guys. I totally agree with your view point regarding the “shoegaze” style and sound. Thanks for the tips on getting the correct sound and the petals that can be used to achieve that style.

Kevin Shields has a room full of jazzmasters in all different tunings that he tuned to by following his ear, in which each guitar (expensive original jazzmasters mind you) represents one song's unique tuning that he uses live. So its no wonder all the tunings are hard to map out!

No synths on Loveless. Samplers, yes, synths no. The synth-ish things are sampled guitar sounds that, yeah, the triggering makes it come off like a synth, but that’s still guitar stuff. (The apex of this sort of thing are two lovesliescrushing records that Scott built just out of voice samples, Chorus +3 and CRWTH (Chorus Redux).) (MBV had also been sampling Colm and some percussion, in part because of an injury, and in part because sampling was just interesting to them at the time.)

Shoegaze was not about being a rock star or even a “performer”; it was about creating an atmosphere and soundscape experience, both on record and on stage. Obviously this coincided with being the first generation of Indie musicians to fully embrace / exploit guitar pedals and effects processors.
