I think something to note here is that the Rainger FX pedal he’s using has a gate on it and distorts the reverb tail. When he digs in the gate opens as does all the distorted reverb tails. This, with the portastudio, is how it really can jump out of the mix suddenly and then come back down without getting all muddy (like you would with long no gated reverb tails)
@richardclark.8 ай бұрын
i noticed that gate right away. they are fun and if you can get your head around them they do so much more than get rid of noise. i just find them so hard to master. its like i am not in control anymore and i lose connection with the guitar. it takes a special, patient player to use the sound on that track.

@galensjp018 ай бұрын
@@richardclark. I think it really helps to wrap your head around the sensitivity/threshold of a gate. Gates open up because of sound/attack. Think less about them closing and more about what it takes to get them to open. Set the threshold so that it opens with a slightly heavier touch. Then it won’t just open randomly with everything you do but only when you’re starting to dig in. Also where the gate is placed is huge. After all your effects will make the gate closing sound so much more dramatic because it’ll kill all the effects that came before (similar to this rainger pedal). Hope any of that helps! Haha

In case anyone was wondering, its a Roland GK midi pickup ran into a Roland VG8 Guitar Synth processor. Patch used sounds like a nylon string guitar patch for "Are you looking up" and probably the "VeryEFX" patch for the tones from Candy and a few others. This is the lions share of the actual sound you are hearing. Its blended with the guitar, which is tuned Bb standard or something like that. Also, notice he is using flatwound strings....This is likely a 7 string flatwound baritone set with the high string omitted. Something along the lines of .065 - .015 gauge flatwound string set. Lots of things going on here that add to the sauce. The Tascam is almost inconsequential in my eyes. Its more a factor that he is going direct and not through an amp. Again, big chunk of what you're actually hearing is the midi pickup + Roland VG8 + very low string tuning.

@tedrogersisback57293 ай бұрын
This sound is generated by the VIO algorithm on the Roland VG-8EX. I've owned one since they were released in 1998, this sound is pretty easy to create if you have one. The same algorithm was reincarnated on the Boss SY-1000 by popular demand from long time VG-8EX users like myself. The VG-8EX is not a pitch to MIDI guitar synth it is essentially using re synthesis and other types of harmonic and spectral processing, but the playing experience is just like playing 'normal' guitar i.e. no perceivable latency, muting, harmonics etc are recreated too.

It sounds like a synth pedal. Something like a Mel 9.

The first things that came to mind upon hearing this where 1) John Mayer's very old noodle-clip with a Collings I35 through his Pete Cornish Fuzz pedal and 2) Kurt Rosenwinkel's tone where he "HIDES" the attack of his notes with (mainly) a POG pedal . It's so evoking, an organic sound .... I will certainly check out this young man !

So glad he's finally broken through. His first album from 2019 was amazing and the pandemic, like many bands breaking through at that time, stunted his trajectory.

I'm glad I'm not the only one blown away that people are completely enthralled with this thin shit tone.

I want to take a moment to appreciate this. It’s not a pure “sound like [famous person] like this.” It’s a genuine appreciation for someone doing something new and different. It’s real enjoyment and not sterile “content.” It’s so human for KZbin. It is not my thing. I wouldn’t play it on repeat. But it’s still awesome. It’s a different flavor of an old technique (abuse a preamp), but to a new creative end. And it’s not virtuoso finger tapping. Just real feeling. So much great guitar music. Some I “don’t get” because I’m old and I shouldn’t. Some I love. So many amazing female guitar players. So many genres with singer/songwriter stuff, “math rock”, “shoegaze”, metal, blues/folk, R&B, etc. (I put genres in quotes that don’t sound like what they meant to me in the 90s, but are still good) I love the baritones, weird tunings, odd gear, but still being relatable emotional music. I wish I kept my TASCAM now. It was a piece of crap. Got rid of it when my friend got the sweet MiniDisc version. But honestly, I miss the simplicity of recording to tape (or MiniDisc). I’m just doing it for myself anyway.
